Moon in Aquarius (Chandra in Kumbha)
Benefic when waxing · Air · Sthira · ruled by Saturn
The Moon in Aquarius is in a neutral sign. Aquarius is ruled by Saturn, and the Moon counts Saturn neutral.
The relationship is not mutual, and that is the most useful thing on this page. the Moon regards Saturn as neutral, but Saturn regards the Moon as an enemy. The classical friendship table is asymmetric, which readers almost always assume it is not. In practice it means the Moon settles into Aquarius more warily than the host intends, so the placement behaves differently depending on which of the two is the stronger graha in the chart.
Aquarius is a sthira air sign governing the calves and ankles, and the Moon is reckoned benefic when waxing, governing mind, emotions, mother, intuition. Whatever the Moon signifies — mother, the mind (manas), water, milk, the public, comfort, the home — is what this rashi’s fixity holds in place.
The Dignity, Stated Precisely
- In Aquarius: in a neutral sign.
- The Moon’s own sign: Cancer.
- Exalted in: Taurus, deepest at 3°.
- Debilitated in: Scorpio.
- Moolatrikona: Taurus 4°–30°.
- Aquarius’s lord: Saturn. Aquarius exalts no graha and debilitates no graha.
What the Moon Aspects From Aquarius
Every graha casts a full aspect on the 7th house from itself, and the Moon has no special drishti beyond it, so the 7th is the whole of its reach. Counting from Aquarius, that lands on:
- 7th from Aquarius → Leo (Simha), ruled by Sun.
Leo is not one of the Moon’s own rashis, so the single aspect the Moon throws from Aquarius lands on Sun’s territory. Whose territory it is decides how the aspect is received.
How Far Aquarius Is From the Moon’s Own Ground
A graha is read partly by how far it has been displaced from the rashi it owns, and that distance is simple counting. Counting inclusively from Cancer, Aquarius falls as follows:
- 8th from Cancer — a 6/8 — the shashtashtaka relation, the most awkward of the twelve.
- 10th from Taurus, the sign of its exaltation — a square, both of them kendra houses.
- 4th from Scorpio, the sign of its fall — a square, both of them kendra houses.
- Opposite Aquarius stands Leo, ruled by Sun — the rashi the Moon faces from here, and therefore the one it aspects whatever else it does or does not aspect.
The Company the Moon Keeps in Aquarius
Dignity runs in both directions, and the rashi has its own roster. Aquarius runs from 300°00′ to 330°00′ of sidereal longitude — the arc the Sun crosses about Feb 13 – Mar 14 — faces west, is classed male, and as an air sign is of the Shudra varna. Within those thirty degrees:
- Ruled by Saturn.
- Exalts no graha. Aquarius is one of the rashis with no exaltation degree in it at all, so nothing gains maximum strength here.
- Debilitates no graha. No graha reaches its lowest point inside Aquarius.
- Moolatrikona of Saturn, 0°–20°.
So Aquarius holds neither an exaltation nor a debilitation degree, which makes it one of the more neutral hosts in the zodiac. There is no fixed point inside it for the Moon to be measured against, and the reading falls back on Saturn and on the pada. Aquarius’s own traits — innovative, independent, humanitarian, eccentric, progressive — are the register in which mind, emotions, mother, intuition gets expressed when the Moon sits here.
The Nine Padas the Moon Crosses in Aquarius
A rashi is thirty degrees and a pada is three degrees twenty minutes, so every sign holds exactly nine padas — never a round number of nakshatras. Aquarius holds 3 nakshatras in whole or in part: Dhanishta (padas 3, 4), Shatabhisha and Purva Bhadrapada (padas 1, 2, 3).
| Pada | Sidereal longitude | Nakshatra | Lord | Navamsa |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 300°00′–303°20′ | Dhanishta pada 3 | Mars | Libra |
| 2 | 303°20′–306°40′ | Dhanishta pada 4 | Mars | Scorpio |
| 3 | 306°40′–310°00′ | Shatabhisha pada 1 | Rahu | Sagittarius |
| 4 | 310°00′–313°20′ | Shatabhisha pada 2 | Rahu | Capricorn |
| 5 | 313°20′–316°40′ | Shatabhisha pada 3 | Rahu | Aquarius |
| 6 | 316°40′–320°00′ | Shatabhisha pada 4 | Rahu | Pisces |
| 7 | 320°00′–323°20′ | Purva Bhadrapada pada 1 | Jupiter | Aries |
| 8 | 323°20′–326°40′ | Purva Bhadrapada pada 2 | Jupiter | Taurus |
| 9 | 326°40′–330°00′ | Purva Bhadrapada pada 3 | Jupiter | Gemini |
The Moon rules Rohini, Hasta, Shravana, and none of them falls in Aquarius. So across all thirty degrees there is no stretch where the Moon has nakshatra-level ownership to fall back on; the whole sign is read through Saturn, and through what Saturn makes of a guest it counts an enemy. The nakshatra lords it does cross here are Mars, Rahu, Jupiter.
When the Moon Is Actually in Aquarius
The Moon is the fastest of the grahas, so this placement is not a rare event — it recurs roughly every twenty-seven and a half days. Across the two years this site computes from the DE421 ephemeris, the Moon enters Aquarius 26 times.
Those visits are not equal, and the variation is real rather than rounding. The Moon’s longest stay in Aquarius is 60h32m, beginning 4 December 2027; its shortest is 53h22m, beginning 16 March 2026 — a spread of 7h10m. The cause is the Moon’s elliptical orbit: it travels slowest near apogee and fastest near perigee, so a sign it crosses near apogee holds it well over two and a half days, and the same sign crossed near perigee barely two.
Because the Moon changes sign every two days or so, its placement is the one thing on a chart that a birth time genuinely decides. For the day-by-day position see the daily panchang, and for what the Moon in Aquarius means as a birth sign, the Aquarius rashi page.
The Moon also combusts: within 12° of the Sun, which is why an Amavasya birth carries a weak Moon. A combust Moon in Aquarius is read as weakened whatever the dignity above says, which is the standard case where the textbook verdict and the actual sky disagree.
Reading the Moon in Aquarius
The Moon signifies mother, the mind (manas), water, milk, the public, comfort, the home. In Aquarius those significations are filtered through a sthira air sign ruled by Saturn, and the dignity above says how much support they get in the process. In a neutral sign they are neither helped nor hindered, which makes everything else in the chart decide.
This is not a prediction, and it cannot be one: the house Aquarius occupies from the ascendant, which of the nine padas above holds the graha, and the running dasha all change the answer. The Moon is reckoned benefic when waxing, and it gains in the 1st, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th while it struggles in the 6th, 8th and 12th — so Moon in Aquarius is a different placement in each of them. Under Kaal Purush Aquarius is the 11th bhava, so Moon in the 11th house is the same pairing read from the bhava side, with the Aquarius transit dated for each of the twelve ascendants.
For what the Moon does when strong and when afflicted, its 10-year mahadasha, and the full remedy set, see the Moon (Chandra) page. The short form: the Moon’s day is Monday, its gemstone is Pearl (Moti), its mantra is Om Chandraya Namah, and its deities are Parvati, and Shiva through the Monday fast.
