Moon in Virgo (Chandra in Kanya)
Benefic when waxing · Earth · Dvisvabhava · ruled by Mercury
The Moon in Virgo is in a friend's sign. Virgo is ruled by Mercury, and the Moon counts Mercury a friend.
The relationship is not mutual, and that is the most useful thing on this page. the Moon regards Mercury as a friend, but Mercury regards the Moon as an enemy. The classical friendship table is asymmetric, which readers almost always assume it is not. In practice it means the Moon settles into Virgo more readily than the host reciprocates, so the placement behaves differently depending on which of the two is the stronger graha in the chart.
Virgo is a dvisvabhava earth sign governing the abdomen and intestines, and the Moon is reckoned benefic when waxing, governing mind, emotions, mother, intuition. Whatever the Moon signifies — mother, the mind (manas), water, milk, the public, comfort, the home — is what this rashi’s dual nature splits in two.
The Dignity, Stated Precisely
- In Virgo: in a friend's sign.
- The Moon’s own sign: Cancer.
- Exalted in: Taurus, deepest at 3°.
- Debilitated in: Scorpio.
- Moolatrikona: Taurus 4°–30°.
- Virgo’s lord: Mercury. Virgo exalts Mercury at 15° and debilitates Venus at 27°.
What the Moon Aspects From Virgo
Every graha casts a full aspect on the 7th house from itself, and the Moon has no special drishti beyond it, so the 7th is the whole of its reach. Counting from Virgo, that lands on:
- 7th from Virgo → Pisces (Meena), ruled by Jupiter.
Pisces is not one of the Moon’s own rashis, so the single aspect the Moon throws from Virgo lands on Jupiter’s territory. Whose territory it is decides how the aspect is received.
How Far Virgo Is From the Moon’s Own Ground
A graha is read partly by how far it has been displaced from the rashi it owns, and that distance is simple counting. Counting inclusively from Cancer, Virgo falls as follows:
- 3rd from Cancer — a 3/11, the upachaya pairing.
- 5th from Taurus, the sign of its exaltation — a trine, the easiest of the distances.
- 11th from Scorpio, the sign of its fall — a 3/11, the upachaya pairing.
- Opposite Virgo stands Pisces, ruled by Jupiter — the rashi the Moon faces from here, and therefore the one it aspects whatever else it does or does not aspect.
The Company the Moon Keeps in Virgo
Dignity runs in both directions, and the rashi has its own roster. Virgo runs from 150°00′ to 180°00′ of sidereal longitude — the arc the Sun crosses about Sep 17 – Oct 17 — faces south, is classed female, and as an earth sign is of the Vaishya varna. Within those thirty degrees:
- Ruled by Mercury.
- Exalts Mercury at 15° — not the Moon, so the strongest single degree of Virgo is not the Moon’s.
- Debilitates Venus at 27°, a different graha from the Moon.
- Moolatrikona of Mercury, 16°–20°.
So the Moon shares Virgo with both an exaltation degree and a debilitation degree belonging to other grahas. A graha sitting close to either point is read against it, which is a reason the exact degree matters more in Virgo than in a sign carrying neither. Virgo’s own traits — analytical, practical, diligent, modest, perfectionist — are the register in which mind, emotions, mother, intuition gets expressed when the Moon sits here.
The Nine Padas the Moon Crosses in Virgo
A rashi is thirty degrees and a pada is three degrees twenty minutes, so every sign holds exactly nine padas — never a round number of nakshatras. Virgo holds 3 nakshatras in whole or in part: Uttara Phalguni (padas 2, 3, 4), Hasta and Chitra (padas 1, 2).
| Pada | Sidereal longitude | Nakshatra | Lord | Navamsa |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 150°00′–153°20′ | Uttara Phalguni pada 2 | Sun | Capricorn |
| 2 | 153°20′–156°40′ | Uttara Phalguni pada 3 | Sun | Aquarius |
| 3 | 156°40′–160°00′ | Uttara Phalguni pada 4 | Sun | Pisces |
| 4 | 160°00′–163°20′ | Hasta pada 1 | Moon ← | Aries |
| 5 | 163°20′–166°40′ | Hasta pada 2 | Moon ← | Taurus |
| 6 | 166°40′–170°00′ | Hasta pada 3 | Moon ← | Gemini |
| 7 | 170°00′–173°20′ | Hasta pada 4 | Moon ← | Cancer |
| 8 | 173°20′–176°40′ | Chitra pada 1 | Mars | Leo |
| 9 | 176°40′–180°00′ | Chitra pada 2 | Mars | Virgo |
The Moon rules Rohini, Hasta, Shravana, and one of them falls inside Virgo: Hasta. Those degrees are the part of Virgo where the Moon is on its own ground regardless of what the sign lord thinks of it — a nakshatra lordship is a second, finer layer of dignity, and it does not have to agree with the first.
When the Moon Is Actually in Virgo
The Moon is the fastest of the grahas, so this placement is not a rare event — it recurs roughly every twenty-seven and a half days. Across the two years this site computes from the DE421 ephemeris, the Moon enters Virgo 27 times.
Those visits are not equal, and the variation is real rather than rounding. The Moon’s longest stay in Virgo is 58h13m, beginning 8 January 2026; its shortest is 49h53m, beginning 29 September 2027 — a spread of 8h20m. The cause is the Moon’s elliptical orbit: it travels slowest near apogee and fastest near perigee, so a sign it crosses near apogee holds it well over two and a half days, and the same sign crossed near perigee barely two.
Because the Moon changes sign every two days or so, its placement is the one thing on a chart that a birth time genuinely decides. For the day-by-day position see the daily panchang, and for what the Moon in Virgo means as a birth sign, the Virgo rashi page.
The Moon also combusts: within 12° of the Sun, which is why an Amavasya birth carries a weak Moon. A combust Moon in Virgo is read as weakened whatever the dignity above says, which is the standard case where the textbook verdict and the actual sky disagree.
Reading the Moon in Virgo
The Moon signifies mother, the mind (manas), water, milk, the public, comfort, the home. In Virgo those significations are filtered through a dvisvabhava earth sign ruled by Mercury, and the dignity above says how much support they get in the process. In a friend’s sign they are supported without being amplified — a quietly workable placement.
This is not a prediction, and it cannot be one: the house Virgo occupies from the ascendant, which of the nine padas above holds the graha, and the running dasha all change the answer. The Moon is reckoned benefic when waxing, and it gains in the 1st, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th while it struggles in the 6th, 8th and 12th — so Moon in Virgo is a different placement in each of them. Under Kaal Purush Virgo is the 6th bhava, so Moon in the 6th house is the same pairing read from the bhava side, with the Virgo transit dated for each of the twelve ascendants.
For what the Moon does when strong and when afflicted, its 10-year mahadasha, and the full remedy set, see the Moon (Chandra) page. The short form: the Moon’s day is Monday, its gemstone is Pearl (Moti), its mantra is Om Chandraya Namah, and its deities are Parvati, and Shiva through the Monday fast.
