Moon in Gemini (Chandra in Mithuna)
Benefic when waxing · Air · Dvisvabhava · ruled by Mercury
The Moon in Gemini is in a friend's sign. Gemini is ruled by Mercury, and the Moon counts Mercury a friend.
The relationship is not mutual, and that is the most useful thing on this page. the Moon regards Mercury as a friend, but Mercury regards the Moon as an enemy. The classical friendship table is asymmetric, which readers almost always assume it is not. In practice it means the Moon settles into Gemini more readily than the host reciprocates, so the placement behaves differently depending on which of the two is the stronger graha in the chart.
Gemini is a dvisvabhava air sign governing the shoulders, arms and hands, and the Moon is reckoned benefic when waxing, governing mind, emotions, mother, intuition. Whatever the Moon signifies — mother, the mind (manas), water, milk, the public, comfort, the home — is what this rashi’s dual nature splits in two.
The Dignity, Stated Precisely
- In Gemini: in a friend's sign.
- The Moon’s own sign: Cancer.
- Exalted in: Taurus, deepest at 3°.
- Debilitated in: Scorpio.
- Moolatrikona: Taurus 4°–30°.
- Gemini’s lord: Mercury. Gemini exalts no graha and debilitates no graha.
What the Moon Aspects From Gemini
Every graha casts a full aspect on the 7th house from itself, and the Moon has no special drishti beyond it, so the 7th is the whole of its reach. Counting from Gemini, that lands on:
- 7th from Gemini → Sagittarius (Dhanu), ruled by Jupiter.
Sagittarius is not one of the Moon’s own rashis, so the single aspect the Moon throws from Gemini lands on Jupiter’s territory. Whose territory it is decides how the aspect is received.
How Far Gemini Is From the Moon’s Own Ground
A graha is read partly by how far it has been displaced from the rashi it owns, and that distance is simple counting. Counting inclusively from Cancer, Gemini falls as follows:
- 12th from Cancer — a 2/12, the gain-and-loss axis.
- 2nd from Taurus, the sign of its exaltation — a 2/12, the gain-and-loss axis.
- 8th from Scorpio, the sign of its fall — a 6/8 — the shashtashtaka relation, the most awkward of the twelve.
- Opposite Gemini stands Sagittarius, ruled by Jupiter — the rashi the Moon faces from here, and therefore the one it aspects whatever else it does or does not aspect.
The Company the Moon Keeps in Gemini
Dignity runs in both directions, and the rashi has its own roster. Gemini runs from 60°00′ to 90°00′ of sidereal longitude — the arc the Sun crosses about Jun 15 – Jul 16 — faces west, is classed male, and as an air sign is of the Shudra varna. Within those thirty degrees:
- Ruled by Mercury.
- Exalts no graha. Gemini is one of the rashis with no exaltation degree in it at all, so nothing gains maximum strength here.
- Debilitates no graha. No graha reaches its lowest point inside Gemini.
- Holds no moolatrikona. Gemini contains no graha’s moolatrikona stretch, so there is no privileged arc within it.
So Gemini holds neither an exaltation nor a debilitation degree, which makes it one of the more neutral hosts in the zodiac. There is no fixed point inside it for the Moon to be measured against, and the reading falls back on Mercury and on the pada. Gemini’s own traits — curious, adaptable, communicative, witty, restless — are the register in which mind, emotions, mother, intuition gets expressed when the Moon sits here.
The Nine Padas the Moon Crosses in Gemini
A rashi is thirty degrees and a pada is three degrees twenty minutes, so every sign holds exactly nine padas — never a round number of nakshatras. Gemini holds 3 nakshatras in whole or in part: Mrigashira (padas 3, 4), Ardra and Punarvasu (padas 1, 2, 3).
| Pada | Sidereal longitude | Nakshatra | Lord | Navamsa |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 60°00′–63°20′ | Mrigashira pada 3 | Mars | Libra |
| 2 | 63°20′–66°40′ | Mrigashira pada 4 | Mars | Scorpio |
| 3 | 66°40′–70°00′ | Ardra pada 1 | Rahu | Sagittarius |
| 4 | 70°00′–73°20′ | Ardra pada 2 | Rahu | Capricorn |
| 5 | 73°20′–76°40′ | Ardra pada 3 | Rahu | Aquarius |
| 6 | 76°40′–80°00′ | Ardra pada 4 | Rahu | Pisces |
| 7 | 80°00′–83°20′ | Punarvasu pada 1 | Jupiter | Aries |
| 8 | 83°20′–86°40′ | Punarvasu pada 2 | Jupiter | Taurus |
| 9 | 86°40′–90°00′ | Punarvasu pada 3 | Jupiter | Gemini |
The Moon rules Rohini, Hasta, Shravana, and none of them falls in Gemini. So across all thirty degrees there is no stretch where the Moon has nakshatra-level ownership to fall back on; the whole sign is read through Mercury, and through what Mercury makes of a guest it counts an enemy. The nakshatra lords it does cross here are Mars, Rahu, Jupiter.
When the Moon Is Actually in Gemini
The Moon is the fastest of the grahas, so this placement is not a rare event — it recurs roughly every twenty-seven and a half days. Across the two years this site computes from the DE421 ephemeris, the Moon enters Gemini 27 times.
Those visits are not equal, and the variation is real rather than rounding. The Moon’s longest stay in Gemini is 51h48m, beginning 20 October 2027; its shortest is 47h07m, beginning 23 December 2026 — a spread of 4h41m. The cause is the Moon’s elliptical orbit: it travels slowest near apogee and fastest near perigee, so a sign it crosses near apogee holds it well over two and a half days, and the same sign crossed near perigee barely two.
Because the Moon changes sign every two days or so, its placement is the one thing on a chart that a birth time genuinely decides. For the day-by-day position see the daily panchang, and for what the Moon in Gemini means as a birth sign, the Gemini rashi page.
The Moon also combusts: within 12° of the Sun, which is why an Amavasya birth carries a weak Moon. A combust Moon in Gemini is read as weakened whatever the dignity above says, which is the standard case where the textbook verdict and the actual sky disagree.
Reading the Moon in Gemini
The Moon signifies mother, the mind (manas), water, milk, the public, comfort, the home. In Gemini those significations are filtered through a dvisvabhava air sign ruled by Mercury, and the dignity above says how much support they get in the process. In a friend’s sign they are supported without being amplified — a quietly workable placement.
This is not a prediction, and it cannot be one: the house Gemini occupies from the ascendant, which of the nine padas above holds the graha, and the running dasha all change the answer. The Moon is reckoned benefic when waxing, and it gains in the 1st, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th while it struggles in the 6th, 8th and 12th — so Moon in Gemini is a different placement in each of them. Under Kaal Purush Gemini is the 3rd bhava, so Moon in the 3rd house is the same pairing read from the bhava side, with the Gemini transit dated for each of the twelve ascendants.
For what the Moon does when strong and when afflicted, its 10-year mahadasha, and the full remedy set, see the Moon (Chandra) page. The short form: the Moon’s day is Monday, its gemstone is Pearl (Moti), its mantra is Om Chandraya Namah, and its deities are Parvati, and Shiva through the Monday fast.
