graha in rashi

Moon in Scorpio (Chandra in Vrishchika)

Benefic when waxing · Water · Sthira · ruled by Mars

The Moon in Scorpio is debilitated. Scorpio is ruled by Mars, and the Moon counts Mars neutral.

The relationship is not mutual, and that is the most useful thing on this page. the Moon regards Mars as neutral, but Mars regards the Moon as a friend. The classical friendship table is asymmetric, which readers almost always assume it is not. In practice it means the Moon settles into Scorpio more warily than the host intends, so the placement behaves differently depending on which of the two is the stronger graha in the chart.

Scorpio is a sthira water sign governing the pelvis and reproductive organs, and the Moon is reckoned benefic when waxing, governing mind, emotions, mother, intuition. Whatever the Moon signifies mother, the mind (manas), water, milk, the public, comfort, the home — is what this rashi’s fixity holds in place. Debilitation is not a verdict of failure; it is a statement that the graha has no support from its host and must be judged by everything else in the chart.

The Dignity, Stated Precisely

  • In Scorpio: debilitated.
  • The Moon’s own sign: Cancer.
  • Exalted in: Taurus, deepest at 3°.
  • Debilitated in: Scorpio.
  • Moolatrikona: Taurus 4°–30°.
  • Scorpio’s lord: Mars. Scorpio exalts no graha and debilitates Moon at 3°.

What the Moon Aspects From Scorpio

Every graha casts a full aspect on the 7th house from itself, and the Moon has no special drishti beyond it, so the 7th is the whole of its reach. Counting from Scorpio, that lands on:

  • 7th from ScorpioTaurus (Vrishabha), ruled by Venus.

Taurus is not one of the Moon’s own rashis, so the single aspect the Moon throws from Scorpio lands on Venus’s territory. Whose territory it is decides how the aspect is received.

How Far Scorpio Is From the Moon’s Own Ground

A graha is read partly by how far it has been displaced from the rashi it owns, and that distance is simple counting. Counting inclusively from Cancer, Scorpio falls as follows:

  • 5th from Cancera trine, the easiest of the distances.
  • 7th from Taurus, the sign of its exaltationa straight opposition.
  • 1st from Scorpio, the sign of its fall — the same rashi.
  • Opposite Scorpio stands Taurus, ruled by Venus — the rashi the Moon faces from here, and therefore the one it aspects whatever else it does or does not aspect.

The Company the Moon Keeps in Scorpio

Dignity runs in both directions, and the rashi has its own roster. Scorpio runs from 210°00′ to 240°00′ of sidereal longitude — the arc the Sun crosses about Nov 17 – Dec 15 — faces north, is classed female, and as a water sign is of the Brahmin varna. Within those thirty degrees:

  • Ruled by Mars.
  • Exalts no graha. Scorpio is one of the rashis with no exaltation degree in it at all, so nothing gains maximum strength here.
  • Debilitates Moon at 3° — which is this placement.
  • Holds no moolatrikona. Scorpio contains no graha’s moolatrikona stretch, so there is no privileged arc within it.

So Scorpio carries a fixed dignity point inside it, and the closer the Moon sits to that degree the more the reading is dominated by it rather than by the sign as a whole. Scorpio’s own traits — passionate, determined, perceptive, secretive, intense — are the register in which mind, emotions, mother, intuition gets expressed when the Moon sits here.

The Nine Padas the Moon Crosses in Scorpio

A rashi is thirty degrees and a pada is three degrees twenty minutes, so every sign holds exactly nine padas — never a round number of nakshatras. Scorpio holds 3 nakshatras in whole or in part: Vishakha (pada 4), Anuradha and Jyeshtha.

PadaSidereal longitudeNakshatraLordNavamsa
1210°00′213°20′Vishakha pada 4JupiterCancer
2213°20′216°40′Anuradha pada 1SaturnLeo
3216°40′220°00′Anuradha pada 2SaturnVirgo
4220°00′223°20′Anuradha pada 3SaturnLibra
5223°20′226°40′Anuradha pada 4SaturnScorpio
6226°40′230°00′Jyeshtha pada 1MercurySagittarius
7230°00′233°20′Jyeshtha pada 2MercuryCapricorn
8233°20′236°40′Jyeshtha pada 3MercuryAquarius
9236°40′240°00′Jyeshtha pada 4MercuryPisces

The Moon rules Rohini, Hasta, Shravana, and none of them falls in Scorpio. So across all thirty degrees there is no stretch where the Moon has nakshatra-level ownership to fall back on; the whole sign is read through Mars, and through what Mars makes of a guest it counts a friend. The nakshatra lords it does cross here are Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury.

When the Moon Is Actually in Scorpio

The Moon is the fastest of the grahas, so this placement is not a rare event — it recurs roughly every twenty-seven and a half days. Across the two years this site computes from the DE421 ephemeris, the Moon enters Scorpio 27 times.

Those visits are not equal, and the variation is real rather than rounding. The Moon’s longest stay in Scorpio is 60h35m, beginning 26 June 2026; its shortest is 55h36m, beginning 31 October 2027 — a spread of 4h59m. The cause is the Moon’s elliptical orbit: it travels slowest near apogee and fastest near perigee, so a sign it crosses near apogee holds it well over two and a half days, and the same sign crossed near perigee barely two.

Because the Moon changes sign every two days or so, its placement is the one thing on a chart that a birth time genuinely decides. For the day-by-day position see the daily panchang, and for what the Moon in Scorpio means as a birth sign, the Scorpio rashi page.

The Moon also combusts: within 12° of the Sun, which is why an Amavasya birth carries a weak Moon. A combust Moon in Scorpio is read as weakened whatever the dignity above says, which is the standard case where the textbook verdict and the actual sky disagree.

Reading the Moon in Scorpio

The Moon signifies mother, the mind (manas), water, milk, the public, comfort, the home. In Scorpio those significations are filtered through a sthira water sign ruled by Mars, and the dignity above says how much support they get in the process. At debilitation they arrive without the host’s backing, so they depend on aspects, dispositor and dasha to reach anything.

This is not a prediction, and it cannot be one: the house Scorpio occupies from the ascendant, which of the nine padas above holds the graha, and the running dasha all change the answer. The Moon is reckoned benefic when waxing, and it gains in the 1st, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th while it struggles in the 6th, 8th and 12th — so Moon in Scorpio is a different placement in each of them. Under Kaal Purush Scorpio is the 8th bhava, so Moon in the 8th house is the same pairing read from the bhava side, with the Scorpio transit dated for each of the twelve ascendants.

For what the Moon does when strong and when afflicted, its 10-year mahadasha, and the full remedy set, see the Moon (Chandra) page. The short form: the Moon’s day is Monday, its gemstone is Pearl (Moti), its mantra is Om Chandraya Namah, and its deities are Parvati, and Shiva through the Monday fast.
