graha in rashi

Sun in Scorpio (Surya in Vrishchika)

Mild malefic · Water · Sthira · ruled by Mars

The Sun in Scorpio is in a friend's sign. Scorpio is ruled by Mars, and the Sun counts Mars a friend.

The relationship runs both ways: the Sun counts Mars a friend, and Mars counts the Sun a friend. A mutual reading is the simpler case — the graha and its host agree about each other, so the placement does not change character depending on which of the two is stronger.

Scorpio is a sthira water sign governing the pelvis and reproductive organs, and the Sun is reckoned mild malefic, governing soul, ego, vitality, leadership, father. Whatever the Sun signifies father, government, authority, the soul (atma), medicine, administration — is what this rashi’s fixity holds in place.

The Dignity, Stated Precisely

  • In Scorpio: in a friend's sign.
  • The Sun’s own sign: Leo.
  • Exalted in: Aries, deepest at 10°.
  • Debilitated in: Libra.
  • Moolatrikona: Leo 0°–20°.
  • Scorpio’s lord: Mars. Scorpio exalts no graha and debilitates Moon at 3°.

What the Sun Aspects From Scorpio

Every graha casts a full aspect on the 7th house from itself, and the Sun has no special drishti beyond it, so the 7th is the whole of its reach. Counting from Scorpio, that lands on:

  • 7th from ScorpioTaurus (Vrishabha), ruled by Venus.

Taurus is not one of the Sun’s own rashis, so the single aspect the Sun throws from Scorpio lands on Venus’s territory. Whose territory it is decides how the aspect is received.

How Far Scorpio Is From the Sun’s Own Ground

A graha is read partly by how far it has been displaced from the rashi it owns, and that distance is simple counting. Counting inclusively from Leo, Scorpio falls as follows:

  • 4th from Leoa square, both of them kendra houses.
  • 8th from Aries, the sign of its exaltationa 6/8 — the shashtashtaka relation, the most awkward of the twelve.
  • 2nd from Libra, the sign of its fall — a 2/12, the gain-and-loss axis.
  • Opposite Scorpio stands Taurus, ruled by Venus — the rashi the Sun faces from here, and therefore the one it aspects whatever else it does or does not aspect.

The Company the Sun Keeps in Scorpio

Dignity runs in both directions, and the rashi has its own roster. Scorpio runs from 210°00′ to 240°00′ of sidereal longitude — the arc the Sun crosses about Nov 17 – Dec 15 — faces north, is classed female, and as a water sign is of the Brahmin varna. Within those thirty degrees:

  • Ruled by Mars.
  • Exalts no graha. Scorpio is one of the rashis with no exaltation degree in it at all, so nothing gains maximum strength here.
  • Debilitates Moon at 3°, a different graha from the Sun.
  • Holds no moolatrikona. Scorpio contains no graha’s moolatrikona stretch, so there is no privileged arc within it.

So Scorpio carries a fixed dignity point inside it, and the closer the Sun sits to that degree the more the reading is dominated by it rather than by the sign as a whole. Scorpio’s own traits — passionate, determined, perceptive, secretive, intense — are the register in which soul, ego, vitality, leadership, father gets expressed when the Sun sits here.

The Nine Padas the Sun Crosses in Scorpio

A rashi is thirty degrees and a pada is three degrees twenty minutes, so every sign holds exactly nine padas — never a round number of nakshatras. Scorpio holds 3 nakshatras in whole or in part: Vishakha (pada 4), Anuradha and Jyeshtha.

PadaSidereal longitudeNakshatraLordNavamsa
1210°00′213°20′Vishakha pada 4JupiterCancer

8233°20′236°40′Jyeshtha pada 3MercuryAquarius
9236°40′240°00′Jyeshtha pada 4MercuryPisces

The Sun rules Krittika, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha, and none of them falls in Scorpio. So across all thirty degrees there is no stretch where the Sun has nakshatra-level ownership to fall back on; the whole sign is read through Mars, and through what Mars makes of a guest it counts a friend. The nakshatra lords it does cross here are Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury.

When the Sun Is Actually in Scorpio

This is the part of the page that is not in a textbook. Computed from the DE421 sidereal ephemeris, the Sun occupies Scorpio for 2 stretches inside 2026 and 2027:

  • 16 November 2026 to 16 December 202630 days, after which the Sun moves on to Sagittarius.
  • 17 November 2027 to 16 December 202729 days, after which the Sun moves on to Sagittarius.

Dates rather than clock times, because that is what a placement question needs. The ingress instants are computed and are printed on the monthly readings, where they matter for choosing a day.

Reading the Sun in Scorpio

The Sun signifies father, government, authority, the soul (atma), medicine, administration. In Scorpio those significations are filtered through a sthira water sign ruled by Mars, and the dignity above says how much support they get in the process. In a friend’s sign they are supported without being amplified — a quietly workable placement.

This is not a prediction, and it cannot be one: the house Scorpio occupies from the ascendant, which of the nine padas above holds the graha, and the running dasha all change the answer. The Sun is reckoned mild malefic, and it gains in the 1st, 5th, 9th, 10th and 11th while it struggles in the 4th, 7th and 12th — so Sun in Scorpio is a different placement in each of them. Under Kaal Purush Scorpio is the 8th bhava, so Sun in the 8th house is the same pairing read from the bhava side, with the Scorpio transit dated for each of the twelve ascendants.

For what the Sun does when strong and when afflicted, its 6-year mahadasha, and the full remedy set, see the Sun (Surya) page. The short form: the Sun’s day is Sunday, its gemstone is Ruby (Manik), its mantra is Om Suryaya Namah, and its deities are Surya, invoked through the Aditya Hridayam.
