graha in bhava

Sun in the 8th House

आयु भाव · Surya · Scorpio under Kaal Purush · in a friend's sign

The Sun, a mild malefic graha signifying father, government, authority, the soul (atma), medicine, administration, placed in the bhava of longevity, sudden events, inheritance, occult, transformation, in-laws, joint finances — that pairing is the whole of what the Sun in the 8th house means before a chart is opened. The 8th house does not look to the Sun for its significations though — it looks to Saturn for longevity — so the Sun here colours this bhava’s matters without representing them, and the karaka’s own condition has to be read separately from this placement.

Under Kaal Purush the 8th Is Scorpio

In the natural chart the 8th house is Scorpio, so the Sun here is in a friend's sign. The bhava answers to Mars, with Ketu as co-lord, and the two agree about each other: each counts the other a friend, so nothing in the Sun’s dealings with the lord of the 8th pulls against itself — the terms on which this bhava delivers longevity are set by Mars, with Ketu as co-lord’s own placement alone. Scorpio is spanned by the fourth pada of Vishakha, Anuradha and Jyeshtha, lorded in that order by Jupiter, Saturn and Mercury. None of the three is the Sun, so the Sun in the 8th always reports to another graha at the nakshatra level, and the pada decides which of the three — a finer cut on longevity than the rashi gives, and the reason two people with the Sun in the same 8th house read differently.

What the 8th House’s Classification Does to the Sun

The 8th is classified dusthana (malefic house). Set against the Sun, a mild malefic graha, that classification produces:

  • Dusthana. The 8th is a house of difficulty, so what suffers is soul, ego, vitality, leadership, father — while what gets used is the Sun’s capacity to endure longevity rather than to enjoy it.

The Sun is documented as doing well in the 1st, 5th, 9th, 10th, 11th and badly in the 4th, 7th, 12th, and the 8th is in neither list. That absence is worth something: with no inherited verdict about the Sun here, the reading of the 8th falls entirely to the rashi, the dispositor and the dasha.

Directional strength. The Sun gains digbala in the 10th, which is a 3/11, the upachaya pairing from the 8th — so in the 8th the directional component of the Sun’s strength has to be made up elsewhere in the shadbala reckoning.

Which Bhavas the Sun Reaches From the 8th

The Sun casts only the drishti every graha has, the 7th from itself, which from the 8th means it reaches one bhava:

  • The 2nd, wealth, family, speech, food, accumulated assets, early childhood, immediate family — the 7th from the 8th.

Where the 8th Sits Relative to the Sun’s Own Bhavas

  • Leo, which the Sun owns, is the 5tha square, both of them kendra positions from the 8th.
  • the Sun exalts in Aries, the 1sta 6/8, the shashtashtaka distance the tradition singles out from the 8th.
  • the Sun falls in Libra, the 7tha 2/12, the gain-and-loss pairing from the 8th.
  • Bhavat bhavam from the 8th gives the 3rd, courage, siblings, short travels, communication, hands and arms, neighbours, hobbies — a Parashari extension, read as the Sun’s secondary indicator for the same matters.
  • Mars, dispositor of the 8th, also owns the 1st — so whatever the Sun does in the 8th is routed through a lord whose other business is personal identity.

The body reading. The 8th bhava is external genitalia, excretory organs, colon and the chronic-disease constitution, while the Sun governs heart, eyes, bones, head, and general vitality (ojas); medical astrology reads the 8th for the Sun where those two overlap, and their not overlapping is as informative as their doing so. A framework for reading a chart, not a diagnosis.

When the Sun Is Actually in Your 8th House

Your ascendant decides which rashi is your 8th house, and the ephemeris knows exactly when the Sun is in it. The Sun covers all twelve rashis inside 2026–2027, so the 8th-house transit happens for every ascendant — what differs is when, and for how long. The longest unbroken stretch in the table below is 32 days, and 2 ascendants are level on it: Scorpio, for whom the 8th house is Gemini; and Sagittarius, for whom the 8th house is Cancer.

Sign ingresses computed from the DE421 ephemeris, sidereal Lahiri, as days rather than instants: the ingresses of the slower bodies shift by hours between one ayanamsa and the next, so a printed minute would be false precision. “From” or “to” marks a spell already running when the tables open, or still running when they close.

The Classical Reading of the Sun in the 8th

Weakened for its own significations — can strain the relationship with the father and with authority — while sharpening interest in hidden knowledge.

Reading the 8th in an Actual Chart

Everything above is structural — true of the Sun in the 8th in any chart. Four things decide what it does in yours, in this order. The rashi the Sun actually occupies: the 8th house is Scorpio for an Aries ascendant and for no other, because Kaal Purush is the Aries-lagna chart — the table above gives the other eleven. The lord of your 8th house and its condition, because a bhava delivers through its lord and not through its occupant. The aspects onto the Sun there. And the dashathe Sun’s mahadasha runs 6 years, and a placement is largely dormant until its own period does.

The Other Grahas in the 8th House

The Sun in the Other Bhavas

For the doctrine behind the terms above — what a kendra is, how digbala is reckoned, the bhava’s own strong and afflicted readings and its remedies — see the 8th house in full. For the Sun itself, its dignities, dasha and remedies, see the Sun, and for the Kaal Purush placement in detail, the Sun in Scorpio.

Is the Sun in Your 8th House?

The table needs one thing from you — your ascendant. A free kundli gives you that, the rashi the Sun occupies, its dignity there, and the dasha you are running: the four things this page says decide the reading.
