graha in bhava

Sun in the 4th House

सुख भाव · Surya · Cancer under Kaal Purush · in a friend's sign

The Sun, a mild malefic graha signifying father, government, authority, the soul (atma), medicine, administration, placed in the bhava of mother, home, property, vehicles, inner peace, education base, emotional foundation — that pairing is the whole of what the Sun in the 4th house means before a chart is opened. The 4th house does not look to the Sun for its significations though — it looks to Moon for the mother and the mind — so the Sun here colours this bhava’s matters without representing them, and the karaka’s own condition has to be read separately from this placement.

Under Kaal Purush the 4th Is Cancer

In the natural chart the 4th house is Cancer, so the Sun here is in a friend's sign. The bhava answers to the Moon, and the two agree about each other: each counts the other a friend, so nothing in the Sun’s dealings with the lord of the 4th pulls against itself — the terms on which this bhava delivers mother's influence are set by the Moon’s own placement alone. Cancer is spanned by the fourth pada of Punarvasu, Pushya and Ashlesha, lorded in that order by Jupiter, Saturn and Mercury. None of the three is the Sun, so the Sun in the 4th always reports to another graha at the nakshatra level, and the pada decides which of the three — a finer cut on mother's influence than the rashi gives, and the reason two people with the Sun in the same 4th house read differently.

What the 4th House’s Classification Does to the Sun

The 4th is classified kendra (angular). Set against the Sun, a mild malefic graha, that classification produces:

  • Kendra. The 4th is angular, so the Sun here works on a platform — whatever it does shows outwardly in the life rather than staying internal.

The Sun is documented as struggling in the 4th, 7th, 12th, the 4th included — the 7th gives friction in partnership and the 4th unsettles domestic peace. Read that as where the effort goes in the 4th, not as a verdict: the Sun’s dispositor and the dasha decide the outcome.

Directional strength. The Sun gains digbala in the 10th, which is a direct opposition from the 4th — so in the 4th the directional component of the Sun’s strength has to be made up elsewhere in the shadbala reckoning.

Which Bhavas the Sun Reaches From the 4th

The Sun casts only the drishti every graha has, the 7th from itself, which from the 4th means it reaches one bhava:

  • The 10th, career, reputation, authority, public status, profession, achievements, government — the 7th from the 4th. The Sun is documented as doing well in the 10th, so this aspect strengthens a bhava it already suits.

Where the 4th Sits Relative to the Sun’s Own Bhavas

  • Leo, which the Sun owns, is the 5tha 2/12, the gain-and-loss pairing from the 4th.
  • the Sun exalts in Aries, the 1sta square, both of them kendra positions from the 4th.
  • the Sun falls in Libra, the 7tha square, both of them kendra positions from the 4th.
  • Bhavat bhavam from the 4th gives the 7th, marriage, life partner, business partnerships, public dealings, contracts, open enemies — a Parashari extension, read as the Sun’s secondary indicator for the same matters.

The body reading. The 4th bhava is chest, heart, lungs, breasts and the stomach lining, while the Sun governs heart, eyes, bones, head, and general vitality (ojas); medical astrology reads the 4th for the Sun where those two overlap, and their not overlapping is as informative as their doing so. A framework for reading a chart, not a diagnosis.

When the Sun Is Actually in Your 4th House

Your ascendant decides which rashi is your 4th house, and the ephemeris knows exactly when the Sun is in it. The Sun covers all twelve rashis inside 2026–2027, so the 4th-house transit happens for every ascendant — what differs is when, and for how long. The longest unbroken stretch in the table below is 32 days, and 2 ascendants are level on it: Aries, for whom the 4th house is Cancer; and Pisces, for whom the 4th house is Gemini.

Sign ingresses computed from the DE421 ephemeris, sidereal Lahiri, as days rather than instants: the ingresses of the slower bodies shift by hours between one ayanamsa and the next, so a printed minute would be false precision. “From” or “to” marks a spell already running when the tables open, or still running when they close.

Reading the 4th in an Actual Chart

Everything above is structural — true of the Sun in the 4th in any chart. Four things decide what it does in yours, in this order. The rashi the Sun actually occupies: the 4th house is Cancer for an Aries ascendant and for no other, because Kaal Purush is the Aries-lagna chart — the table above gives the other eleven. The lord of your 4th house and its condition, because a bhava delivers through its lord and not through its occupant. The aspects onto the Sun there. And the dashathe Sun’s mahadasha runs 6 years, and a placement is largely dormant until its own period does. Where a graha sits in a bhava it is documented as struggling in, as the Sun does in the 4th, the dasha is what decides whether that reads as difficulty or merely as absence.

The Other Grahas in the 4th House

The Sun in the Other Bhavas

For the doctrine behind the terms above — what a kendra is, how digbala is reckoned, the bhava’s own strong and afflicted readings and its remedies — see the 4th house in full. For the Sun itself, its dignities, dasha and remedies, see the Sun, and for the Kaal Purush placement in detail, the Sun in Cancer.

Is the Sun in Your 4th House?

The table needs one thing from you — your ascendant. A free kundli gives you that, the rashi the Sun occupies, its dignity there, and the dasha you are running: the four things this page says decide the reading.
