graha in bhava

Mars in the 4th House

सुख भाव · Mangal · Cancer under Kaal Purush · debilitated

Mars, a malefic graha signifying younger siblings, land and property, weapons, surgery, engineering, the armed forces, placed in the bhava of mother, home, property, vehicles, inner peace, education base, emotional foundation — that pairing is the whole of what Mars in the 4th house means before a chart is opened. The 4th house does not look to Mars for its significations though — it looks to Moon for the mother and the mind — so Mars here colours this bhava’s matters without representing them, and the karaka’s own condition has to be read separately from this placement.

Under Kaal Purush the 4th Is Cancer

In the natural chart the 4th house is Cancer, so Mars here is debilitated. The bhava answers to the Moon, and the two do not read each other the same way: Mars counts the Moon a friend, while the Moon counts Mars neutral — so whichever of the two is the stronger in a given chart changes what the 4th delivers on mother's influence, not merely how much of it arrives. Cancer is spanned by the fourth pada of Punarvasu, Pushya and Ashlesha, lorded in that order by Jupiter, Saturn and Mercury. None of the three is Mars, so Mars in the 4th always reports to another graha at the nakshatra level, and the pada decides which of the three — a finer cut on mother's influence than the rashi gives, and the reason two people with Mars in the same 4th house read differently.

What the 4th House’s Classification Does to Mars

The 4th is classified kendra (angular). Set against Mars, a malefic graha, that classification produces:

  • Kendra. The 4th is angular, so Mars here works on a platform — whatever it does shows outwardly in the life rather than staying internal.

Mars is documented as struggling in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th, 12th, the 4th included — the Mangal dosha houses, where its heat lands on the body, the home and the marriage. Read that as where the effort goes in the 4th, not as a verdict: Mars’s dispositor and the dasha decide the outcome.

Directional strength. Mars gains digbala in the 10th, which is a direct opposition from the 4th — so in the 4th the directional component of Mars’s strength has to be made up elsewhere in the shadbala reckoning.

Which Bhavas Mars Reaches From the 4th

Besides the 7th that every graha casts, Mars adds the 4th and 8th, so from the 4th it reaches three bhavas:

  • The 7th, marriage, life partner, business partnerships, public dealings, contracts, open enemies — the 4th from the 4th. Mars is documented as struggling in the 7th, so this aspect lands as pressure on a bhava it is uneasy in.
  • The 10th, career, reputation, authority, public status, profession, achievements, government — the 7th from the 4th. Mars is documented as doing well in the 10th, so this aspect strengthens a bhava it already suits.
  • The 11th, gains, income, elder siblings, fulfilment of desires, friends, networks, aspirations — the 8th from the 4th. Mars is documented as doing well in the 11th, so this aspect strengthens a bhava it already suits.

Where the 4th Sits Relative to Mars’s Own Bhavas

  • Aries, which Mars owns, is the 1sta square, both of them kendra positions from the 4th.
  • Scorpio, which Mars owns, is the 8tha trine, the most supportive of the distances from the 4th.
  • Mars exalts in Capricorn, the 10tha direct opposition from the 4th.
  • The 4th is Mars’s debilitation bhavaCancer falls here.
  • Bhavat bhavam from the 4th gives the 7th, marriage, life partner, business partnerships, public dealings, contracts, open enemies — a Parashari extension, read as Mars’s secondary indicator for the same matters.

The body reading. The 4th bhava is chest, heart, lungs, breasts and the stomach lining, while Mars governs muscle, bone marrow, red blood cells, the gall bladder and the forehead; medical astrology reads the 4th for Mars where those two overlap, and their not overlapping is as informative as their doing so. A framework for reading a chart, not a diagnosis.

When Mars Is Actually in Your 4th House

Your ascendant decides which rashi is your 4th house, and the ephemeris knows exactly when Mars is in it. Mars covers all twelve rashis inside 2026–2027, so the 4th-house transit happens for every ascendant — what differs is when, and for how long. The longest unbroken stretch in the table below is 118 days, which belongs to a Taurus ascendant, for whom the 4th house is Leo. Some of these stretches include a retrograde stint, which is why a few rows carry two spells in the same rashi rather than one.

Sign ingresses computed from the DE421 ephemeris, sidereal Lahiri, as days rather than instants: the ingresses of the slower bodies shift by hours between one ayanamsa and the next, so a printed minute would be false precision. “From” or “to” marks a spell already running when the tables open, or still running when they close.

Reading the 4th in an Actual Chart

Everything above is structural — true of Mars in the 4th in any chart. Four things decide what it does in yours, in this order. The rashi Mars actually occupies: the 4th house is Cancer for an Aries ascendant and for no other, because Kaal Purush is the Aries-lagna chart — the table above gives the other eleven. The lord of your 4th house and its condition, because a bhava delivers through its lord and not through its occupant. The aspects onto Mars there. And the dashaMars’s mahadasha runs 7 years, and a placement is largely dormant until its own period does. Where a graha sits in a bhava it is documented as struggling in, as Mars does in the 4th, the dasha is what decides whether that reads as difficulty or merely as absence.

Is Mars in Your 4th House?

The table needs one thing from you — your ascendant. A free kundli gives you that, the rashi Mars occupies, its dignity there, and the dasha you are running: the four things this page says decide the reading.
