Mercury in the 4th House

Mercury, a neutral graha signifying speech, writing, trade, accounts, mathematics, maternal uncles, students, placed in the bhava of mother, home, property, vehicles, inner peace, education base, emotional foundation — that pairing is the whole of what Mercury in the 4th house means before a chart is opened. The 4th house does not look to Mercury for its significations though — it looks to Moon for the mother and the mind — so Mercury here colours this bhava’s matters without representing them, and the karaka’s own condition has to be read separately from this placement.

Under Kaal Purush the 4th Is Cancer

In the natural chart the 4th house is Cancer, so Mercury here is in an enemy's sign. The bhava answers to the Moon, and the two do not read each other the same way: Mercury counts the Moon an enemy, while the Moon counts Mercury a friend — so whichever of the two is the stronger in a given chart changes what the 4th delivers on mother's influence, not merely how much of it arrives. Cancer is spanned by the fourth pada of Punarvasu, Pushya and Ashlesha, lorded in that order by Jupiter, Saturn and Mercury. Mercury lords Ashlesha among the three, so Mercury in the 4th is its own nakshatra dispositor when it falls anywhere in that nakshatra — the one arrangement in which nothing at all mediates between Mercury and this bhava’s mother's influence.

What the 4th House’s Classification Does to Mercury

The 4th is classified kendra (angular). Set against Mercury, a neutral graha, that classification produces:

• Kendra. The 4th is angular, so Mercury here works on a platform — whatever it does shows outwardly in the life rather than staying internal.

Mercury’s own preferred bhavas are the 1st, 4th, 5th, 9th, 10th, 11th, and the 4th is among them — Mercury takes the 1st as its digbala house and thrives in the Kendra and Trikona. So the classification of the 4th and the disposition of Mercury point the same way, which is not true of most of the 108 combinations.

Directional strength. Mercury gains digbala in the 1st, which is a square, both of them kendra positions from the 4th — so in the 4th the directional component of Mercury’s strength has to be made up elsewhere in the shadbala reckoning.

Mercury casts only the drishti every graha has, the 7th from itself, which from the 4th means it reaches one bhava:

• The 10th, career, reputation, authority, public status, profession, achievements, government — the 7th from the 4th. Mercury is documented as doing well in the 10th, so this aspect strengthens a bhava it already suits.

• Gemini, which Mercury owns, is the 3rd — a 2/12, the gain-and-loss pairing from the 4th.
• Virgo, which Mercury owns, is the 6th — a 3/11, the upachaya pairing from the 4th.
• Mercury exalts in Virgo, the 6th — a 3/11, the upachaya pairing from the 4th. And Mercury owns Virgo as well as exalting in it, so the 6th is the one bhava carrying both of Mercury’s claims at once.
• Mercury falls in Pisces, the 12th — a trine, the most supportive of the distances from the 4th.
• Bhavat bhavam from the 4th gives the 7th, marriage, life partner, business partnerships, public dealings, contracts, open enemies — a Parashari extension, read as Mercury’s secondary indicator for the same matters.

The body reading. The 4th bhava is chest, heart, lungs, breasts and the stomach lining, while Mercury governs skin, the nervous system, the vocal apparatus, lungs and hands; medical astrology reads the 4th for Mercury where those two overlap, and their not overlapping is as informative as their doing so. When Mercury Is Actually in Your 4th House

Your ascendant decides which rashi is your 4th house, and the ephemeris knows exactly when Mercury is in it. Mercury covers all twelve rashis inside 2026–2027, so the 4th-house transit happens for every ascendant — what differs is when, and for how long. The longest unbroken stretch in the table below is 68 days, which belongs to a Pisces ascendant, for whom the 4th house is Gemini. Some of these stretches include a retrograde stint, which is why a few rows carry two spells in the same rashi rather than one.
