Mercury in the 7th House

Mercury, a neutral graha signifying speech, writing, trade, accounts, mathematics, maternal uncles, students, placed in the bhava of marriage, life partner, business partnerships, public dealings, contracts, open enemies — that pairing is the whole of what Mercury in the 7th house means before a chart is opened. The 7th house does not look to Mercury for its significations though — it looks to Venus for the spouse, Jupiter for the husband in a woman's chart — so Mercury here colours this bhava’s matters without representing them, and the karaka’s own condition has to be read separately from this placement.

Under Kaal Purush the 7th Is Libra

In the natural chart the 7th house is Libra, so Mercury here is in a friend's sign. The bhava answers to Venus, and the two agree about each other: each counts the other a friend, so nothing in Mercury’s dealings with the lord of the 7th pulls against itself — the terms on which this bhava delivers spouse / partner are set by Venus’s own placement alone. Libra is spanned by the third and fourth padas of Chitra, Swati and the first, second and third padas of Vishakha, lorded in that order by Mars, Rahu and Jupiter. None of the three is Mercury, so Mercury in the 7th always reports to another graha at the nakshatra level, and the pada decides which of the three — a finer cut on spouse / partner than the rashi gives, and the reason two people with Mercury in the same 7th house read differently.

What the 7th House’s Classification Does to Mercury

The 7th is classified kendra (angular); maraka (with the 2nd). Set against Mercury, a neutral graha, that classification produces:

• Kendra. The 7th is angular, so Mercury here works on a platform — whatever it does shows outwardly in the life rather than staying internal.
• Maraka. The 7th is one of the two maraka houses, a classification used only in longevity calculation. It says nothing about Mercury on its own and nothing at all about an individual chart.

Mercury is documented as doing well in the 1st, 4th, 5th, 9th, 10th, 11th and badly in the 6th, 8th, 12th, and the 7th is in neither list. That absence is worth something: with no inherited verdict about Mercury here, the reading of the 7th falls entirely to the rashi, the dispositor and the dasha.

Directional strength. Mercury gains digbala in the 1st, which is a direct opposition from the 7th — so in the 7th the directional component of Mercury’s strength has to be made up elsewhere in the shadbala reckoning.

• The 1st, self, body, personality, life path, first impressions, head and physical appearance — the 7th from the 7th. Mercury is documented as doing well in the 1st, so this aspect strengthens a bhava it already suits.

Where the 7th Sits Relative to Mercury’s Own Bhavas

• Gemini, which Mercury owns, is the 3rd — a trine, the most supportive of the distances from the 7th.
• Virgo, which Mercury owns, is the 6th — a 2/12, the gain-and-loss pairing from the 7th.
• Mercury exalts in Virgo, the 6th — a 2/12, the gain-and-loss pairing from the 7th. And Mercury owns Virgo as well as exalting in it, so the 6th is the one bhava carrying both of Mercury’s claims at once.
• Mercury falls in Pisces, the 12th — a 6/8, the shashtashtaka distance the tradition singles out from the 7th.
• Bhavat bhavam from the 7th gives the 1st, self, body, personality, life path, first impressions, head and physical appearance — a Parashari extension, read as Mercury’s secondary indicator for the same matters.
• Venus, dispositor of the 7th, also owns the 2nd — so whatever Mercury does in the 7th is routed through a lord whose other business is savings and wealth.

The body reading. The 7th bhava is pelvis, lower back, reproductive organs, bladder and the kidneys, while Mercury governs skin, the nervous system, the vocal apparatus, lungs and hands; medical astrology reads the 7th for Mercury where those two overlap, and their not overlapping is as informative as their doing so. A framework for reading a chart, not a diagnosis.

When Mercury Is Actually in Your 7th House

Your ascendant decides which rashi is your 7th house, and the ephemeris knows exactly when Mercury is in it. Mercury covers all twelve rashis inside 2026–2027, so the 7th-house transit happens for every ascendant — what differs is when, and for how long. The longest unbroken stretch in the table below is 68 days, which belongs to a Sagittarius ascendant, for whom the 7th house is Gemini. Some of these stretches include a retrograde stint, which is why a few rows carry two spells in the same rashi rather than one.

Sign ingresses computed from the DE421 ephemeris, sidereal Lahiri, as days rather than instants: the ingresses of the slower bodies shift by hours between one ayanamsa and the next, so a printed minute would be false precision. “From” or “to” marks a spell already running when the tables open, or still running when they close.
