Mercury in the 3rd House

Mercury, a neutral graha signifying speech, writing, trade, accounts, mathematics, maternal uncles, students, placed in the bhava of courage, siblings, short travels, communication, hands and arms, neighbours, hobbies — that pairing is the whole of what Mercury in the 3rd house means before a chart is opened. It is a closer fit than most: the 3rd house counts Mercury among its own natural significators, the karaka it is read through for communication. A significator sitting in the bhava it signifies is read more literally than any other placement, because the graha and the house are asking the same question.

Under Kaal Purush the 3rd Is Gemini

In the natural chart the 3rd house is Gemini, so Mercury here is in its own sign. Mercury rules Gemini itself, so the 3rd bhava is its own natural ground and it answers to no other graha for this house’s matters. Gemini is spanned by the third and fourth padas of Mrigashira, Ardra and the first, second and third padas of Punarvasu, lorded in that order by Mars, Rahu and Jupiter. None of the three is Mercury, so Mercury in the 3rd always reports to another graha at the nakshatra level, and the pada decides which of the three — a finer cut on younger siblings than the rashi gives, and the reason two people with Mercury in the same 3rd house read differently.

The 3rd is classified upachaya (malefics gain here); apoklima (cadent); dusthana in some traditions. Set against Mercury, a neutral graha, that classification produces:

• Dusthana. The 3rd is a house of difficulty, so what suffers is intellect, communication, commerce — while what gets used is Mercury’s capacity to endure younger siblings rather than to enjoy it.
• Upachaya. The 3rd is one of the four growing houses, where the tradition holds that malefics gain. Mercury is not a malefic, so the bonus is not Mercury’s to collect — it is read on ordinary terms in the 3rd.
• And a disagreement. Some traditions count the 3rd a dusthana and others do not. It changes the reading of Mercury here materially, so it is left standing as a disagreement rather than resolved in one direction.

Mercury is documented as doing well in the 1st, 4th, 5th, 9th, 10th, 11th and badly in the 6th, 8th, 12th, and the 3rd is in neither list. • Mercury falls in Pisces, the 12th — a square, both of them kendra positions from the 3rd.
• Bhavat bhavam from the 3rd gives the 5th, intelligence, children, creativity, romance, speculation, past-life merit (Poorva Punya) — a Parashari extension, read as Mercury’s secondary indicator for the same matters.
• Mercury, dispositor of the 3rd, also owns the 6th — so whatever Mercury does in the 3rd is routed through a lord whose other business is health and diseases.

The 3rd bhava is arms, shoulders, hands, collarbone, right ear and the upper respiratory tract, while Mercury governs skin, the nervous system, the vocal apparatus, lungs and hands; medical astrology reads the 3rd for Mercury where those two overlap, and their not overlapping is as informative as their doing so.
