Jupiter in the 3rd House

Jupiter, a benefic graha signifying children, teachers and gurus, higher learning, dharma, wealth, and the husband in a woman's chart, placed in the bhava of courage, siblings, short travels, communication, hands and arms, neighbours, hobbies — that pairing is the whole of what Jupiter in the 3rd house means before a chart is opened. The 3rd house does not look to Jupiter for its significations though — it looks to Mars for courage, Mercury for communication — so Jupiter here colours this bhava’s matters without representing them, and the karaka’s own condition has to be read separately from this placement.

Under Kaal Purush the 3rd Is Gemini

In the natural chart the 3rd house is Gemini, so Jupiter here is in an enemy's sign. The bhava answers to Mercury, and the two do not read each other the same way: Jupiter counts Mercury an enemy, while Mercury counts Jupiter neutral — so whichever of the two is the stronger in a given chart changes what the 3rd delivers on younger siblings, not merely how much of it arrives. Gemini is spanned by the third and fourth padas of Mrigashira, Ardra and the first, second and third padas of Punarvasu, lorded in that order by Mars, Rahu and Jupiter. • Upachaya. The 3rd is one of the four growing houses, where the tradition holds that malefics gain. Jupiter is not a malefic, so the bonus is not Jupiter’s to collect — it is read on ordinary terms in the 3rd.
• And a disagreement. Some traditions count the 3rd a dusthana and others do not. It changes the reading of Jupiter here materially, so it is left standing as a disagreement rather than resolved in one direction.
