graha in bhava
Jupiter in the 10th House
कर्म भाव · Guru · Capricorn under Kaal Purush · debilitated
Jupiter, a benefic graha signifying children, teachers and gurus, higher learning, dharma, wealth, and the husband in a woman's chart, placed in the bhava of career, reputation, authority, public status, profession, achievements, government — that pairing is the whole of what Jupiter in the 10th house means before a chart is opened. The 10th house does not look to Jupiter for its significations though — it looks to Saturn for profession, Sun and Mercury for status — so Jupiter here colours this bhava’s matters without representing them, and the karaka’s own condition has to be read separately from this placement.
Under Kaal Purush the 10th Is Capricorn
In the natural chart the 10th house is Capricorn, so Jupiter here is debilitated. The bhava answers to Saturn, and the two agree about each other: each counts the other neutral, so nothing in Jupiter’s dealings with the lord of the 10th pulls against itself — the terms on which this bhava delivers career and profession are set by Saturn’s own placement alone. Capricorn is spanned by the second, third and fourth padas of Uttara Ashadha, Shravana and the first and second padas of Dhanishta, lorded in that order by the Sun, the Moon and Mars. None of the three is Jupiter, so Jupiter in the 10th always reports to another graha at the nakshatra level, and the pada decides which of the three — a finer cut on career and profession than the rashi gives, and the reason two people with Jupiter in the same 10th house read differently.
What the 10th House’s Classification Does to Jupiter
The 10th is classified kendra (angular); upachaya (malefics gain here). Set against Jupiter, a benefic graha, that classification produces:
- Kendra. The 10th is angular, so Jupiter here works on a platform — whatever it does shows outwardly in the life rather than staying internal.
- Upachaya. The 10th is one of the four growing houses, where the tradition holds that malefics gain. Jupiter is not a malefic, so the bonus is not Jupiter’s to collect — it is read on ordinary terms in the 10th.
Jupiter is documented as doing well in the 1st, 5th, 9th, 2nd, 11th and badly in the 6th, 8th, 12th, and the 10th is in neither list. That absence is worth something: with no inherited verdict about Jupiter here, the reading of the 10th falls entirely to the rashi, the dispositor and the dasha.
Directional strength. Jupiter gains digbala in the 1st, which is a square, both of them kendra positions from the 10th — so in the 10th the directional component of Jupiter’s strength has to be made up elsewhere in the shadbala reckoning.
Which Bhavas Jupiter Reaches From the 10th
Besides the 7th that every graha casts, Jupiter adds the 5th and 9th, so from the 10th it reaches three bhavas:
- The 2nd, wealth, family, speech, food, accumulated assets, early childhood, immediate family — the 5th from the 10th. Jupiter is documented as doing well in the 2nd, so this aspect strengthens a bhava it already suits.
- The 4th, mother, home, property, vehicles, inner peace, education base, emotional foundation — the 7th from the 10th.
- The 6th, enemies, diseases, debts, service, daily routine, pets, competition, legal issues — the 9th from the 10th. Jupiter is documented as struggling in the 6th, so this aspect lands as pressure on a bhava it is uneasy in.
Where the 10th Sits Relative to Jupiter’s Own Bhavas
- Sagittarius, which Jupiter owns, is the 9th — a 2/12, the gain-and-loss pairing from the 10th.
- Pisces, which Jupiter owns, is the 12th — a 3/11, the upachaya pairing from the 10th.
- Jupiter exalts in Cancer, the 4th — a direct opposition from the 10th.
- The 10th is Jupiter’s debilitation bhava — Capricorn falls here.
- Bhavat bhavam from the 10th gives the 7th, marriage, life partner, business partnerships, public dealings, contracts, open enemies — a Parashari extension, read as Jupiter’s secondary indicator for the same matters.
- Saturn, dispositor of the 10th, also owns the 11th — so whatever Jupiter does in the 10th is routed through a lord whose other business is income and gains.
The body reading. The 10th bhava is knees, kneecaps, joints and the spine, while Jupiter governs liver, fat and fat metabolism, the arterial system, thighs and hips; medical astrology reads the 10th for Jupiter where those two overlap, and their not overlapping is as informative as their doing so. A framework for reading a chart, not a diagnosis.
When Jupiter Is Actually in Your 10th House
Your ascendant decides which rashi is your 10th house, and here the ephemeris returns a sharper answer than any essay. Jupiter occupies only 4 rashis across 2026–2027, so Jupiter transits the 10th house for only 4 of the twelve ascendants in that whole period — Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius lagnas. For the other 8, general advice about Jupiter in the 10th house describes nothing that is happening. The longest unbroken stretch is 153 days, for a Scorpio ascendant, whose 10th house is Leo.
| Ascendant | Your 10th house is | Jupiter there in 2026–2027 |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | Capricorn | not in these two years |
| Taurus | Aquarius | not in these two years |
| Gemini | Pisces | not in these two years |
| Cancer | Aries | not in these two years |
| Leo | Taurus | not in these two years |
| Virgo | Gemini | to 2 June 2026 |
| Libra | Cancer | 2 June 2026 – 31 October 2026; 25 January 2027 – 26 June 2027 |
| Scorpio | Leo | 31 October 2026 – 25 January 2027; 26 June 2027 – 26 November 2027 |
| Sagittarius | Virgo | from 26 November 2027 |
| Capricorn | Libra | not in these two years |
| Aquarius | Scorpio | not in these two years |
| Pisces | Sagittarius | not in these two years |
Sign ingresses computed from the DE421 ephemeris, sidereal Lahiri, as days rather than instants: the ingresses of the slower bodies shift by hours between one ayanamsa and the next, so a printed minute would be false precision. “From” or “to” marks a spell already running when the tables open, or still running when they close.
The Classical Reading of Jupiter in the 10th
Teaching, law, advisory and finance. Respect and ethical standing, though sometimes less raw ambition than the house can carry.
Reading the 10th in an Actual Chart
Everything above is structural — true of Jupiter in the 10th in any chart. Four things decide what it does in yours, in this order. The rashi Jupiter actually occupies: the 10th house is Capricorn for an Aries ascendant and for no other, because Kaal Purush is the Aries-lagna chart — the table above gives the other eleven. The lord of your 10th house and its condition, because a bhava delivers through its lord and not through its occupant. The aspects onto Jupiter there. And the dasha — Jupiter’s mahadasha runs 16 years, and a placement is largely dormant until its own period does.

The table needs one thing from you — your ascendant. A free kundli gives you that, the rashi Jupiter occupies, its dignity there, and the dasha you are running: the four things this page says decide the reading.
