Rahu in the 10th House

Rahu, a shadowy malefic graha signifying foreign lands and foreigners, technology, aviation, speculation, politics, sudden and unearned gain, placed in the bhava of career, reputation, authority, public status, profession, achievements, government — that pairing is the whole of what Rahu in the 10th house means before a chart is opened. The 10th house does not look to Rahu for its significations though — it looks to Saturn for profession, Sun and Mercury for status — so Rahu here colours this bhava’s matters without representing them, and the karaka’s own condition has to be read separately from this placement.

Under Kaal Purush the 10th Is Capricorn

In the natural chart the 10th house is Capricorn, so Rahu here is in a friend's sign. The bhava answers to Saturn, and the two do not read each other the same way: Rahu counts Saturn a friend, while Saturn counts Rahu neutral — so whichever of the two is the stronger in a given chart changes what the 10th delivers on career and profession, not merely how much of it arrives. Capricorn is spanned by the second, third and fourth padas of Uttara Ashadha, Shravana and the first and second padas of Dhanishta, lorded in that order by the Sun, the Moon and Mars. None of the three is Rahu, so Rahu in the 10th always reports to another graha at the nakshatra level, and the pada decides which of the three — a finer cut on career and profession than the rashi gives, and the reason two people with Rahu in the same 10th house read differently.

Rahu sits outside the reckoning that verdict comes from. No standard table exalts Rahu anywhere, and the schools that do place Rahu somewhere disagree over where: the exaltation entry reads “Taurus by the most common reckoning; Gemini in others” and the debilitation entry “Scorpio by the same reckoning; Sagittarius in others”. Calling Rahu in a friend's sign in Capricorn therefore says how Rahu stands to Saturn, lord of the 10th, and nothing about a dignity Rahu holds in its own right. What the 10th House’s Classification Does to Rahu

The 10th is classified kendra (angular); upachaya (malefics gain here). Set against Rahu, a shadowy malefic graha, that classification produces:

• Kendra. The 10th is angular, so Rahu here works on a platform — whatever it does shows outwardly in the life rather than staying internal.
• Upachaya. The 10th is one of the four growing houses, where the tradition holds that malefics gain. Rahu is reckoned shadowy malefic, so the rule applies directly: on career and profession a difficult graha is an advantage rather than a cost.

Rahu’s own preferred bhavas are the 3rd, 6th, 10th, 11th, and the 10th is among them — the Upachaya houses, where Rahu's appetite becomes ambition instead of obsession. So the classification of the 10th and the disposition of Rahu point the same way, which is not true of most of the 108 combinations.

Directional strength. Digbala is not defined for Rahu. The four grantor bhavas name the seven classical grahas and no node, and Rahu, having no disc, has no direction in which to be bright. On the 10th that is a measurement which does not reach Rahu rather than one Rahu fails — what decides Rahu in the 10th is that bhava’s own subject, career and profession, the condition of Saturn, and the 18-year Rahu mahadasha.

Which Bhavas Rahu Reaches From the 10th

No classical text gives Rahu a drishti of its own, and the traditions that supply Rahu one disagree: some lend Rahu the aspects of Saturn, this bhava’s lord, and some give Rahu none at all. So this page prints no aspect list for Rahu in the 10th, the bhava of career, reputation, authority, public status, profession, achievements, government — a list would state one school’s convention as settled. What Rahu does from the 10th instead is take the colour of Saturn and work through wherever Saturn sits, which makes the reach of Rahu here exactly as wide as Saturn’s own placement and no wider.

And it is never one placement. Rahu and Ketu are the two ends of one line, six bhavas apart always, so Rahu in the 10th fixes Ketu in the 4th, the bhava of mother, home, property, vehicles, inner peace, education base, emotional foundation. The axis is read as Rahu inflating the 10th while Ketu empties the 4th — desires, illusions, foreign lands, sudden gains pressed onto career and profession, and detachment, moksha, past karma, intuition thinning out of mother's influence, at once. Where the 10th Sits Relative to Rahu’s Own Bhavas

• Aquarius, which Rahu owns, is the 11th — a 2/12, the gain-and-loss pairing from the 10th.
• Rahu exalts in Taurus, the 2nd on the commoner reckoning — a trine, the most supportive of the distances from the 10th.
• Rahu falls in Scorpio, the 8th on the commoner reckoning — a 3/11, the upachaya pairing from the 10th.
• Bhavat bhavam from the 10th gives the 7th, marriage, life partner, business partnerships, public dealings, contracts, open enemies — a Parashari extension, read as Rahu’s secondary indicator for the same matters.
• Saturn, dispositor of the 10th, also owns the 11th — so whatever Rahu does in the 10th is routed through a lord whose other business is income and gains.

The body reading. The 10th bhava is knees, kneecaps, joints and the spine, and Rahu is assigned no organ at all. The tradition gives Rahu symptoms instead of tissues, and the list recorded for Rahu is poisoning, phobia, skin disorder and undiagnosable breathing complaints. So Rahu in the 10th is read as those presenting at knees rather than as damage done to it. A framework for reading a chart, not a diagnosis.

When Rahu Is Actually in Your 10th House

Your ascendant decides which rashi is your 10th house, and here the ephemeris returns a sharper answer than any essay. Rahu occupies only 2 rashis across 2026–2027, so Rahu transits the 10th house for only 2 of the twelve ascendants in that whole period — Aries, Taurus lagnas.
