graha in bhava

Moon in the 10th House

कर्म भाव · Chandra · Capricorn under Kaal Purush · in a neutral sign

The Moon, a benefic while waxing graha signifying mother, the mind (manas), water, milk, the public, comfort, the home, placed in the bhava of career, reputation, authority, public status, profession, achievements, government — that pairing is the whole of what the Moon in the 10th house means before a chart is opened. The 10th house does not look to the Moon for its significations though — it looks to Saturn for profession, Sun and Mercury for status — so the Moon here colours this bhava’s matters without representing them, and the karaka’s own condition has to be read separately from this placement.

Under Kaal Purush the 10th Is Capricorn

In the natural chart the 10th house is Capricorn, so the Moon here is in a neutral sign. The bhava answers to Saturn, and the two do not read each other the same way: the Moon counts Saturn neutral, while Saturn counts the Moon an enemy — so whichever of the two is the stronger in a given chart changes what the 10th delivers on career and profession, not merely how much of it arrives. Capricorn is spanned by the second, third and fourth padas of Uttara Ashadha, Shravana and the first and second padas of Dhanishta, lorded in that order by the Sun, the Moon and Mars. The Moon lords Shravana among the three, so the Moon in the 10th is its own nakshatra dispositor when it falls anywhere in that nakshatra — the one arrangement in which nothing at all mediates between the Moon and this bhava’s career and profession.

What the 10th House’s Classification Does to the Moon

The 10th is classified kendra (angular); upachaya (malefics gain here). Set against the Moon, a benefic while waxing graha, that classification produces:

  • Kendra. The 10th is angular, so the Moon here works on a platform — whatever it does shows outwardly in the life rather than staying internal.
  • Upachaya. The 10th is one of the four growing houses, where the tradition holds that malefics gain. The Moon is not a malefic, so the bonus is not the Moon’s to collect — it is read on ordinary terms in the 10th.

The Moon is documented as doing well in the 1st, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th, 11th and badly in the 6th, 8th, 12th, and the 10th is in neither list. That absence is worth something: with no inherited verdict about the Moon here, the reading of the 10th falls entirely to the rashi, the dispositor and the dasha.

Directional strength. The Moon gains digbala in the 4th, which is a direct opposition from the 10th — so in the 10th the directional component of the Moon’s strength has to be made up elsewhere in the shadbala reckoning.

Which Bhavas the Moon Reaches From the 10th

The Moon casts only the drishti every graha has, the 7th from itself, which from the 10th means it reaches one bhava:

  • The 4th, mother, home, property, vehicles, inner peace, education base, emotional foundation — the 7th from the 10th. The Moon is documented as doing well in the 4th, so this aspect strengthens a bhava it already suits.

Where the 10th Sits Relative to the Moon’s Own Bhavas

  • Cancer, which the Moon owns, is the 4tha direct opposition from the 10th.
  • the Moon exalts in Taurus, the 2nda trine, the most supportive of the distances from the 10th.
  • the Moon falls in Scorpio, the 8tha 3/11, the upachaya pairing from the 10th.
  • Bhavat bhavam from the 10th gives the 7th, marriage, life partner, business partnerships, public dealings, contracts, open enemies — a Parashari extension, read as the Moon’s secondary indicator for the same matters.
  • Saturn, dispositor of the 10th, also owns the 11th — so whatever the Moon does in the 10th is routed through a lord whose other business is income and gains.

The body reading. The 10th bhava is knees, kneecaps, joints and the spine, while the Moon governs blood, lymph, lungs, chest, stomach lining and all bodily fluids; medical astrology reads the 10th for the Moon where those two overlap, and their not overlapping is as informative as their doing so. A framework for reading a chart, not a diagnosis.

When the Moon Is Actually in Your 10th House

Your ascendant decides which rashi is your 10th house, and the ephemeris knows when the Moon is in it — but for the Moon that produces a rhythm, not an event. It crosses all twelve rashis in about 27 days, so it is in your 10th house for a little over two days each month, roughly 27 times across 2026–2027. The counts differ by one from row to row only because the two-year window cuts mid-cycle in some rashis; the length of the stay varies more, from about 52 hours to 61, because the Moon’s speed changes with its distance. At that frequency the 10th house is read for mood and timing rather than for events.

Sign ingresses computed from the DE421 ephemeris, sidereal Lahiri, as days rather than instants: the ingresses of the slower bodies shift by hours between one ayanamsa and the next, so a printed minute would be false precision. “From” or “to” marks a spell already running when the tables open, or still running when they close.

Reading the 10th in an Actual Chart

Everything above is structural — true of the Moon in the 10th in any chart. Four things decide what it does in yours, in this order. The rashi the Moon actually occupies: the 10th house is Capricorn for an Aries ascendant and for no other, because Kaal Purush is the Aries-lagna chart — the table above gives the other eleven. The lord of your 10th house and its condition, because a bhava delivers through its lord and not through its occupant. The aspects onto the Moon there. And the dashathe Moon’s mahadasha runs 10 years, and a placement is largely dormant until its own period does.

The Other Grahas in the 10th House

The Moon in the Other Bhavas

For the doctrine behind the terms above — what a kendra is, how digbala is reckoned, the bhava’s own strong and afflicted readings and its remedies — see the 10th house in full. Is the Moon in Your 10th House?

The table needs one thing from you — your ascendant. A free kundli gives you that, the rashi the Moon occupies, its dignity there, and the dasha you are running: the four things this page says decide the reading.
