graha in bhava

Moon in the 11th House

लाभ भाव · Chandra · Aquarius under Kaal Purush · in a neutral sign

The Moon, a benefic while waxing graha signifying mother, the mind (manas), water, milk, the public, comfort, the home, placed in the bhava of gains, income, elder siblings, fulfilment of desires, friends, networks, aspirations — that pairing is the whole of what the Moon in the 11th house means before a chart is opened. The 11th house does not look to the Moon for its significations though — it looks to Jupiter for gains — so the Moon here colours this bhava’s matters without representing them, and the karaka’s own condition has to be read separately from this placement.

Under Kaal Purush the 11th Is Aquarius

In the natural chart the 11th house is Aquarius, so the Moon here is in a neutral sign. The bhava answers to Saturn, and the two do not read each other the same way: the Moon counts Saturn neutral, while Saturn counts the Moon an enemy — so whichever of the two is the stronger in a given chart changes what the 11th delivers on income and gains, not merely how much of it arrives. Aquarius is spanned by the third and fourth padas of Dhanishta, Shatabhisha and the first, second and third padas of Purva Bhadrapada, lorded in that order by Mars, Rahu and Jupiter. None of the three is the Moon, so the Moon in the 11th always reports to another graha at the nakshatra level, and the pada decides which of the three — a finer cut on income and gains than the rashi gives, and the reason two people with the Moon in the same 11th house read differently.

What the 11th House’s Classification Does to the Moon

The 11th is classified upachaya (malefics gain here); panapara (succedent). Set against the Moon, a benefic while waxing graha, that classification produces:

  • Upachaya. The 11th is one of the four growing houses, where the tradition holds that malefics gain. The Moon is not a malefic, so the bonus is not the Moon’s to collect — it is read on ordinary terms in the 11th.

The Moon’s own preferred bhavas are the 1st, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th, 11th, and the 11th is among them — the Moon wants the Kendra and Trikona and does well in the 4th, its own digbala house. So the classification of the 11th and the disposition of the Moon point the same way, which is not true of most of the 108 combinations.

Directional strength. The Moon gains digbala in the 4th, which is a 6/8, the shashtashtaka distance the tradition singles out from the 11th — so in the 11th the directional component of the Moon’s strength has to be made up elsewhere in the shadbala reckoning.

Which Bhavas the Moon Reaches From the 11th

The Moon casts only the drishti every graha has, the 7th from itself, which from the 11th means it reaches one bhava:

  • The 5th, intelligence, children, creativity, romance, speculation, past-life merit (Poorva Punya) — the 7th from the 11th. The Moon is documented as doing well in the 5th, so this aspect strengthens a bhava it already suits.

Where the 11th Sits Relative to the Moon’s Own Bhavas

  • Cancer, which the Moon owns, is the 4tha 6/8, the shashtashtaka distance the tradition singles out from the 11th.
  • the Moon exalts in Taurus, the 2nda square, both of them kendra positions from the 11th.
  • the Moon falls in Scorpio, the 8tha square, both of them kendra positions from the 11th.
  • Bhavat bhavam from the 11th gives the 9th, fortune, dharma, higher education, father, long-distance travel, gurus, philosophy — a Parashari extension, read as the Moon’s secondary indicator for the same matters.
  • Saturn, dispositor of the 11th, also owns the 10th — so whatever the Moon does in the 11th is routed through a lord whose other business is career and profession.

The body reading. The 11th bhava is shins, calves, ankles and the left ear, while the Moon governs blood, lymph, lungs, chest, stomach lining and all bodily fluids; medical astrology reads the 11th for the Moon where those two overlap, and their not overlapping is as informative as their doing so. A framework for reading a chart, not a diagnosis.

When the Moon Is Actually in Your 11th House

Your ascendant decides which rashi is your 11th house, and the ephemeris knows when the Moon is in it — but for the Moon that produces a rhythm, not an event. It crosses all twelve rashis in about 27 days, so it is in your 11th house for a little over two days each month, roughly 26 times across 2026–2027. The counts differ by one from row to row only because the two-year window cuts mid-cycle in some rashis; the length of the stay varies more, from about 52 hours to 61, because the Moon’s speed changes with its distance. At that frequency the 11th house is read for mood and timing rather than for events.

Sign ingresses computed from the DE421 ephemeris, sidereal Lahiri, as days rather than instants: the ingresses of the slower bodies shift by hours between one ayanamsa and the next, so a printed minute would be false precision. “From” or “to” marks a spell already running when the tables open, or still running when they close.

Reading the 11th in an Actual Chart

Everything above is structural — true of the Moon in the 11th in any chart. Four things decide what it does in yours, in this order. The rashi the Moon actually occupies: the 11th house is Aquarius for an Aries ascendant and for no other, because Kaal Purush is the Aries-lagna chart — the table above gives the other eleven. The lord of your 11th house and its condition, because a bhava delivers through its lord and not through its occupant. The aspects onto the Moon there. And the dashathe Moon’s mahadasha runs 10 years, and a placement is largely dormant until its own period does.

The Other Grahas in the 11th House

The Moon in the Other Bhavas

For the doctrine behind the terms above — what a kendra is, how digbala is reckoned, the bhava’s own strong and afflicted readings and its remedies — see the 11th house in full. Is the Moon in Your 11th House?

The table needs one thing from you — your ascendant. A free kundli gives you that, the rashi the Moon occupies, its dignity there, and the dasha you are running: the four things this page says decide the reading.
