Moon in Capricorn (Chandra in Makara)

Benefic when waxing · Earth · Chara · ruled by Saturn

The Moon in Capricorn is in a neutral sign. Capricorn is ruled by Saturn, and the Moon counts Saturn neutral.

The relationship is not mutual, and that is the most useful thing on this page. the Moon regards Saturn as neutral, but Saturn regards the Moon as an enemy. The classical friendship table is asymmetric, which readers almost always assume it is not. In practice it means the Moon settles into Capricorn more warily than the host intends, so the placement behaves differently depending on which of the two is the stronger graha in the chart.

Capricorn is a chara earth sign governing the knees, and the Moon is reckoned benefic when waxing, governing mind, emotions, mother, intuition. Whatever the Moon signifies mother, the mind (manas), water, milk, the public, comfort, the home — is what this rashi’s restlessness moves along.

The Dignity, Stated Precisely

  • In Capricorn: in a neutral sign.
  • The Moon’s own sign: Cancer.
  • Exalted in: Taurus, deepest at 3°.
  • Debilitated in: Scorpio.
  • Moolatrikona: Taurus 4°–30°.
  • Capricorn’s lord: Saturn. Capricorn exalts Mars at 28° and debilitates Jupiter at 5°.

What the Moon Aspects From Capricorn

Every graha casts a full aspect on the 7th house from itself, and the Moon has no special drishti beyond it, so the 7th is the whole of its reach. Counting from Capricorn, that lands on:

  • 7th from CapricornCancer (Karka), ruled by Moon. the Moon rules this sign, so it is aspecting its own house from Capricorn.

Note the one that matters: at least one sign the Moon aspects from Capricorn is a sign the Moon itself rules. A graha aspecting its own rashi protects it, and it is the strongest single argument for reading this placement generously.

How Far Capricorn Is From the Moon’s Own Ground

A graha is read partly by how far it has been displaced from the rashi it owns, and that distance is simple counting. Counting inclusively from Cancer, Capricorn falls as follows:

  • 7th from Cancera straight opposition.
  • 9th from Taurus, the sign of its exaltationa trine, the easiest of the distances.
  • 3rd from Scorpio, the sign of its fall — a 3/11, the upachaya pairing.
  • Opposite Capricorn stands Cancer, ruled by Moon — the rashi the Moon faces from here, and therefore the one it aspects whatever else it does or does not aspect.

The Company the Moon Keeps in Capricorn

Dignity runs in both directions, and the rashi has its own roster. Capricorn runs from 270°00′ to 300°00′ of sidereal longitude — the arc the Sun crosses about Jan 15 – Feb 12 — faces south, is classed female, and as an earth sign is of the Vaishya varna. Within those thirty degrees:

  • Ruled by Saturn.
  • Exalts Mars at 28° — not the Moon, so the strongest single degree of Capricorn is not the Moon’s.
  • Debilitates Jupiter at 5°, a different graha from the Moon.
  • Holds no moolatrikona. Capricorn contains no graha’s moolatrikona stretch, so there is no privileged arc within it.

So the Moon shares Capricorn with both an exaltation degree and a debilitation degree belonging to other grahas. A graha sitting close to either point is read against it, which is a reason the exact degree matters more in Capricorn than in a sign carrying neither. Capricorn’s own traits — ambitious, disciplined, patient, practical, reserved — are the register in which mind, emotions, mother, intuition gets expressed when the Moon sits here.

The Nine Padas the Moon Crosses in Capricorn

A rashi is thirty degrees and a pada is three degrees twenty minutes, so every sign holds exactly nine padas — never a round number of nakshatras. Capricorn holds 3 nakshatras in whole or in part: Uttara Ashadha (padas 2, 3, 4), Shravana and Dhanishta (padas 1, 2).

PadaSidereal longitudeNakshatraLordNavamsa
1270°00′273°20′Uttara Ashadha pada 2SunCapricorn
2273°20′276°40′Uttara Ashadha pada 3SunAquarius
3276°40′280°00′Uttara Ashadha pada 4SunPisces
4280°00′283°20′Shravana pada 1MoonAries
5283°20′286°40′Shravana pada 2MoonTaurus
6286°40′290°00′Shravana pada 3MoonGemini

8293°20′296°40′Dhanishta pada 1MarsLeo
9296°40′300°00′Dhanishta pada 2MarsVirgo

The Moon rules Rohini, Hasta, Shravana, and one of them falls inside Capricorn: Shravana. Those degrees are the part of Capricorn where the Moon is on its own ground regardless of what the sign lord thinks of it — a nakshatra lordship is a second, finer layer of dignity, and it does not have to agree with the first.

When the Moon Is Actually in Capricorn

The Moon is the fastest of the grahas, so this placement is not a rare event — it recurs roughly every twenty-seven and a half days. Across the two years this site computes from the DE421 ephemeris, the Moon enters Capricorn 27 times.

Those visits are not equal, and the variation is real rather than rounding. The Moon’s longest stay in Capricorn is 61h02m, beginning 21 June 2027; its shortest is 56h23m, beginning 15 February 2026 — a spread of 4h39m. The cause is the Moon’s elliptical orbit: it travels slowest near apogee and fastest near perigee, so a sign it crosses near apogee holds it well over two and a half days, and the same sign crossed near perigee barely two.

Because the Moon changes sign every two days or so, its placement is the one thing on a chart that a birth time genuinely decides. For the day-by-day position see the daily panchang, and for what the Moon in Capricorn means as a birth sign, the Capricorn rashi page.

The Moon also combusts: within 12° of the Sun, which is why an Amavasya birth carries a weak Moon. A combust Moon in Capricorn is read as weakened whatever the dignity above says, which is the standard case where the textbook verdict and the actual sky disagree.

Reading the Moon in Capricorn

The Moon signifies mother, the mind (manas), water, milk, the public, comfort, the home. In Capricorn those significations are filtered through a chara earth sign ruled by Saturn, and the dignity above says how much support they get in the process. In a neutral sign they are neither helped nor hindered, which makes everything else in the chart decide.

This is not a prediction, and it cannot be one: the house Capricorn occupies from the ascendant, which of the nine padas above holds the graha, and the running dasha all change the answer. The Moon is reckoned benefic when waxing, and it gains in the 1st, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th while it struggles in the 6th, 8th and 12th — so Moon in Capricorn is a different placement in each of them. Under Kaal Purush Capricorn is the 10th bhava, so Moon in the 10th house is the same pairing read from the bhava side, with the Capricorn transit dated for each of the twelve ascendants.

For what the Moon does when strong and when afflicted, its 10-year mahadasha, and the full remedy set, see the Moon (Chandra) page. The short form: the Moon’s day is Monday, its gemstone is Pearl (Moti), its mantra is Om Chandraya Namah, and its deities are Parvati, and Shiva through the Monday fast.
