Moon in Sagittarius (Chandra in Dhanu)

Benefic when waxing · Fire · Dvisvabhava · ruled by Jupiter

The Moon in Sagittarius is in a neutral sign. Sagittarius is ruled by Jupiter, and the Moon counts Jupiter neutral.

The relationship is not mutual, and that is the most useful thing on this page. the Moon regards Jupiter as neutral, but Jupiter regards the Moon as a friend. The classical friendship table is asymmetric, which readers almost always assume it is not. In practice it means the Moon settles into Sagittarius more warily than the host intends, so the placement behaves differently depending on which of the two is the stronger graha in the chart.

Sagittarius is a dvisvabhava fire sign governing the thighs and hips, and the Moon is reckoned benefic when waxing, governing mind, emotions, mother, intuition. Whatever the Moon signifies mother, the mind (manas), water, milk, the public, comfort, the home — is what this rashi’s dual nature splits in two.

The Dignity, Stated Precisely

  • In Sagittarius: in a neutral sign.
  • The Moon’s own sign: Cancer.
  • Exalted in: Taurus, deepest at 3°.
  • Debilitated in: Scorpio.
  • Moolatrikona: Taurus 4°–30°.
  • Sagittarius’s lord: Jupiter. Sagittarius exalts no graha and debilitates no graha.

What the Moon Aspects From Sagittarius

Every graha casts a full aspect on the 7th house from itself, and the Moon has no special drishti beyond it, so the 7th is the whole of its reach. Counting from Sagittarius, that lands on:

  • 7th from SagittariusGemini (Mithuna), ruled by Mercury.

Gemini is not one of the Moon’s own rashis, so the single aspect the Moon throws from Sagittarius lands on Mercury’s territory. Whose territory it is decides how the aspect is received.

How Far Sagittarius Is From the Moon’s Own Ground

A graha is read partly by how far it has been displaced from the rashi it owns, and that distance is simple counting. Counting inclusively from Cancer, Sagittarius falls as follows:

  • 6th from Cancera 6/8 — the shashtashtaka relation, the most awkward of the twelve.
  • 8th from Taurus, the sign of its exaltationa 6/8 — the shashtashtaka relation, the most awkward of the twelve.
  • 2nd from Scorpio, the sign of its fall — a 2/12, the gain-and-loss axis.
  • Opposite Sagittarius stands Gemini, ruled by Mercury — the rashi the Moon faces from here, and therefore the one it aspects whatever else it does or does not aspect.

The Company the Moon Keeps in Sagittarius

Dignity runs in both directions, and the rashi has its own roster. Sagittarius runs from 240°00′ to 270°00′ of sidereal longitude — the arc the Sun crosses about Dec 16 – Jan 14 — faces east, is classed male, and as a fire sign is of the Kshatriya varna. Within those thirty degrees:

  • Ruled by Jupiter.
  • Exalts no graha. Sagittarius is one of the rashis with no exaltation degree in it at all, so nothing gains maximum strength here.
  • Debilitates no graha. No graha reaches its lowest point inside Sagittarius.
  • Moolatrikona of Jupiter, 0°–10°.

So Sagittarius holds neither an exaltation nor a debilitation degree, which makes it one of the more neutral hosts in the zodiac. There is no fixed point inside it for the Moon to be measured against, and the reading falls back on Jupiter and on the pada. Sagittarius’s own traits — optimistic, adventurous, philosophical, honest, restless — are the register in which mind, emotions, mother, intuition gets expressed when the Moon sits here.

The Nine Padas the Moon Crosses in Sagittarius

A rashi is thirty degrees and a pada is three degrees twenty minutes, so every sign holds exactly nine padas — never a round number of nakshatras. Sagittarius holds 3 nakshatras in whole or in part: Mula, Purva Ashadha and Uttara Ashadha (pada 1).

PadaSidereal longitudeNakshatraLordNavamsa
1240°00′243°20′Mula pada 1KetuAries
2243°20′246°40′Mula pada 2KetuTaurus
3246°40′250°00′Mula pada 3KetuGemini

5253°20′256°40′Purva Ashadha pada 1VenusLeo

8263°20′266°40′Purva Ashadha pada 4VenusScorpio

The Moon rules Rohini, Hasta, Shravana, and none of them falls in Sagittarius. So across all thirty degrees there is no stretch where the Moon has nakshatra-level ownership to fall back on; the whole sign is read through Jupiter, and through what Jupiter makes of a guest it counts a friend. The nakshatra lords it does cross here are Ketu, Venus, Sun.

When the Moon Is Actually in Sagittarius

The Moon is the fastest of the grahas, so this placement is not a rare event — it recurs roughly every twenty-seven and a half days. Across the two years this site computes from the DE421 ephemeris, the Moon enters Sagittarius 27 times.

Those visits are not equal, and the variation is real rather than rounding. The Moon’s longest stay in Sagittarius is 60h57m, beginning 2 February 2027; its shortest is 58h37m, beginning 29 November 2027 — a spread of 2h20m. The cause is the Moon’s elliptical orbit: it travels slowest near apogee and fastest near perigee, so a sign it crosses near apogee holds it well over two and a half days, and the same sign crossed near perigee barely two.

Because the Moon changes sign every two days or so, its placement is the one thing on a chart that a birth time genuinely decides. For the day-by-day position see the daily panchang, and for what the Moon in Sagittarius means as a birth sign, the Sagittarius rashi page.

The Moon also combusts: within 12° of the Sun, which is why an Amavasya birth carries a weak Moon. A combust Moon in Sagittarius is read as weakened whatever the dignity above says, which is the standard case where the textbook verdict and the actual sky disagree.

Reading the Moon in Sagittarius

The Moon signifies mother, the mind (manas), water, milk, the public, comfort, the home. In Sagittarius those significations are filtered through a dvisvabhava fire sign ruled by Jupiter, and the dignity above says how much support they get in the process. In a neutral sign they are neither helped nor hindered, which makes everything else in the chart decide.

This is not a prediction, and it cannot be one: the house Sagittarius occupies from the ascendant, which of the nine padas above holds the graha, and the running dasha all change the answer. The Moon is reckoned benefic when waxing, and it gains in the 1st, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th while it struggles in the 6th, 8th and 12th — so Moon in Sagittarius is a different placement in each of them. Under Kaal Purush Sagittarius is the 9th bhava, so Moon in the 9th house is the same pairing read from the bhava side, with the Sagittarius transit dated for each of the twelve ascendants.

For what the Moon does when strong and when afflicted, its 10-year mahadasha, and the full remedy set, see the Moon (Chandra) page. The short form: the Moon’s day is Monday, its gemstone is Pearl (Moti), its mantra is Om Chandraya Namah, and its deities are Parvati, and Shiva through the Monday fast.
