Mercury in Sagittarius is in a neutral sign. Sagittarius is ruled by Jupiter, and Mercury counts Jupiter neutral.

The relationship is not mutual, and that is the most useful thing on this page. Mercury regards Jupiter as neutral, but Jupiter regards Mercury as an enemy. The classical friendship table is asymmetric, which readers almost always assume it is not. Every graha casts a full aspect on the 7th house from itself, and Mercury has no special drishti beyond it, so the 7th is the whole of its reach. Counting from Sagittarius, that lands on:

• 7th from Sagittarius → Gemini (Mithuna), ruled by Mercury. Mercury rules this sign, so it is aspecting its own house from Sagittarius.

Note the one that matters: at least one sign Mercury aspects from Sagittarius is a sign Mercury itself rules. A graha aspecting its own rashi protects it, and it is the strongest single argument for reading this placement generously.

How Far Sagittarius Is From Mercury’s Own Ground

A graha is read partly by how far it has been displaced from the rashi it owns, and that distance is simple counting. Counting inclusively from Gemini and from Virgo, Sagittarius falls as follows:

• 7th from Gemini — a straight opposition.
• 4th from Virgo — a square, both of them kendra houses.
• 4th from Virgo, the sign of its exaltation — a square, both of them kendra houses.
• 10th from Pisces, the sign of its fall — a square, both of them kendra houses.
• Opposite Sagittarius stands Gemini, ruled by Mercury — the rashi Mercury faces from here, and therefore the one it aspects whatever else it does or does not aspect.

The Company Mercury Keeps in Sagittarius

Dignity runs in both directions, and the rashi has its own roster. Sagittarius runs from 240°00′ to 270°00′ of sidereal longitude — the arc the Sun crosses about Dec 16 – Jan 14 — faces east, is classed male, and as a fire sign is of the Kshatriya varna. Within those thirty degrees:

• 1 January 2026 to 17 January 2026 — 16 days. This stretch was already running when the computed window opens, so its true start lies before 2026, after which Mercury moves on to Capricorn.
• 22 December 2026 to 10 January 2027 — 19 days, after which Mercury moves on to Capricorn.
• 15 December 2027 to 31 December 2027. This stretch is still running when the computed window ends, so the exit falls after 2027 and no date for it is printed here.

Dates rather than clock times, because that is what a placement question needs. The ingress instants are computed and are printed on the monthly readings, where they matter for choosing a day.

Mercury also combusts: within 14° of the Sun when direct, 12° when retrograde — and Mercury is never far from the Sun, so combustion is common. A combust Mercury in Sagittarius is read as weakened whatever the dignity above says, which is the standard case where the textbook verdict and the actual sky disagree.

Reading Mercury in Sagittarius

Mercury signifies speech, writing, trade, accounts, mathematics, maternal uncles, students. In Sagittarius those significations are filtered through a dvisvabhava fire sign ruled by Jupiter, and the dignity above says how much support they get in the process. In a neutral sign they are neither helped nor hindered, which makes everything else in the chart decide.

This is not a prediction, and it cannot be one: the house Sagittarius occupies from the ascendant, which of the nine padas above holds the graha, and the running dasha all change the answer.
