Mercury in Sagittarius (Budh in Dhanu)
Neutral — takes on its company · Fire · Dvisvabhava · ruled by Jupiter
Mercury in Sagittarius is in a neutral sign. Sagittarius is ruled by Jupiter, and Mercury counts Jupiter neutral.
The relationship is not mutual, and that is the most useful thing on this page. Mercury regards Jupiter as neutral, but Jupiter regards Mercury as an enemy. The classical friendship table is asymmetric, which readers almost always assume it is not. In practice it means Mercury settles into Sagittarius more warily than the host intends, so the placement behaves differently depending on which of the two is the stronger graha in the chart.
Sagittarius is a dvisvabhava fire sign governing the thighs and hips, and Mercury is reckoned neutral, governing intellect, communication, commerce. Whatever Mercury signifies — speech, writing, trade, accounts, mathematics, maternal uncles, students — is what this rashi’s dual nature splits in two.
The Dignity, Stated Precisely
- In Sagittarius: in a neutral sign.
- Mercury’s own signs: Gemini and Virgo.
- Exalted in: Virgo, deepest at 15°.
- Debilitated in: Pisces.
- Moolatrikona: Virgo 16°–20°.
- Sagittarius’s lord: Jupiter. Sagittarius exalts no graha and debilitates no graha.
What Mercury Aspects From Sagittarius
Every graha casts a full aspect on the 7th house from itself, and Mercury has no special drishti beyond it, so the 7th is the whole of its reach. Counting from Sagittarius, that lands on:
- 7th from Sagittarius → Gemini (Mithuna), ruled by Mercury. Mercury rules this sign, so it is aspecting its own house from Sagittarius.
Note the one that matters: at least one sign Mercury aspects from Sagittarius is a sign Mercury itself rules. A graha aspecting its own rashi protects it, and it is the strongest single argument for reading this placement generously.
How Far Sagittarius Is From Mercury’s Own Ground
A graha is read partly by how far it has been displaced from the rashi it owns, and that distance is simple counting. Counting inclusively from Gemini and from Virgo, Sagittarius falls as follows:
- 7th from Gemini — a straight opposition.
- 4th from Virgo — a square, both of them kendra houses.
- 4th from Virgo, the sign of its exaltation — a square, both of them kendra houses.
- 10th from Pisces, the sign of its fall — a square, both of them kendra houses.
- Opposite Sagittarius stands Gemini, ruled by Mercury — the rashi Mercury faces from here, and therefore the one it aspects whatever else it does or does not aspect.
The Company Mercury Keeps in Sagittarius
Dignity runs in both directions, and the rashi has its own roster. Sagittarius runs from 240°00′ to 270°00′ of sidereal longitude — the arc the Sun crosses about Dec 16 – Jan 14 — faces east, is classed male, and as a fire sign is of the Kshatriya varna. Within those thirty degrees:
- Ruled by Jupiter.
- Exalts no graha. Sagittarius is one of the rashis with no exaltation degree in it at all, so nothing gains maximum strength here.
- Debilitates no graha. No graha reaches its lowest point inside Sagittarius.
- Moolatrikona of Jupiter, 0°–10°.
So Sagittarius holds neither an exaltation nor a debilitation degree, which makes it one of the more neutral hosts in the zodiac. There is no fixed point inside it for Mercury to be measured against, and the reading falls back on Jupiter and on the pada. Sagittarius’s own traits — optimistic, adventurous, philosophical, honest, restless — are the register in which intellect, communication, commerce gets expressed when Mercury sits here.
The Nine Padas Mercury Crosses in Sagittarius
A rashi is thirty degrees and a pada is three degrees twenty minutes, so every sign holds exactly nine padas — never a round number of nakshatras. Sagittarius holds 3 nakshatras in whole or in part: Mula, Purva Ashadha and Uttara Ashadha (pada 1).
| Pada | Sidereal longitude | Nakshatra | Lord | Navamsa |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 240°00′–243°20′ | Mula pada 1 | Ketu | Aries |
| 2 | 243°20′–246°40′ | Mula pada 2 | Ketu | Taurus |
| 3 | 246°40′–250°00′ | Mula pada 3 | Ketu | Gemini |
| 4 | 250°00′–253°20′ | Mula pada 4 | Ketu | Cancer |
| 5 | 253°20′–256°40′ | Purva Ashadha pada 1 | Venus | Leo |
| 6 | 256°40′–260°00′ | Purva Ashadha pada 2 | Venus | Virgo |
| 7 | 260°00′–263°20′ | Purva Ashadha pada 3 | Venus | Libra |
| 8 | 263°20′–266°40′ | Purva Ashadha pada 4 | Venus | Scorpio |
| 9 | 266°40′–270°00′ | Uttara Ashadha pada 1 | Sun | Sagittarius |
Mercury rules Ashlesha, Jyeshtha, Revati, and none of them falls in Sagittarius. So across all thirty degrees there is no stretch where Mercury has nakshatra-level ownership to fall back on; the whole sign is read through Jupiter, and through what Jupiter makes of a guest it counts an enemy. The nakshatra lords it does cross here are Ketu, Venus, Sun.
When Mercury Is Actually in Sagittarius
This is the part of the page that is not in a textbook. Computed from the DE421 sidereal ephemeris, Mercury occupies Sagittarius for 3 stretches inside 2026 and 2027:
- 1 January 2026 to 17 January 2026 — 16 days. This stretch was already running when the computed window opens, so its true start lies before 2026, after which Mercury moves on to Capricorn.
- 22 December 2026 to 10 January 2027 — 19 days, after which Mercury moves on to Capricorn.
- 15 December 2027 to 31 December 2027. This stretch is still running when the computed window ends, so the exit falls after 2027 and no date for it is printed here.
Dates rather than clock times, because that is what a placement question needs. The ingress instants are computed and are printed on the monthly readings, where they matter for choosing a day.
Mercury also combusts: within 14° of the Sun when direct, 12° when retrograde — and Mercury is never far from the Sun, so combustion is common. A combust Mercury in Sagittarius is read as weakened whatever the dignity above says, which is the standard case where the textbook verdict and the actual sky disagree.
Reading Mercury in Sagittarius
Mercury signifies speech, writing, trade, accounts, mathematics, maternal uncles, students. In Sagittarius those significations are filtered through a dvisvabhava fire sign ruled by Jupiter, and the dignity above says how much support they get in the process. In a neutral sign they are neither helped nor hindered, which makes everything else in the chart decide.
This is not a prediction, and it cannot be one: the house Sagittarius occupies from the ascendant, which of the nine padas above holds the graha, and the running dasha all change the answer. Mercury is reckoned neutral, and it gains in the 1st, 4th, 5th, 9th, 10th and 11th while it struggles in the 6th, 8th and 12th, and any close conjunction with a strong malefic — so Mercury in Sagittarius is a different placement in each of them. Under Kaal Purush Sagittarius is the 9th bhava, so Mercury in the 9th house is the same pairing read from the bhava side, with the Sagittarius transit dated for each of the twelve ascendants.
For what Mercury does when strong and when afflicted, its 17-year mahadasha, and the full remedy set, see the Mercury (Budh) page. The short form: Mercury’s day is Wednesday, its gemstone is Emerald (Panna), its mantra is Om Budhaya Namah, and its deities are Vishnu, and Ganesha for the removal of obstacles to learning.
