graha in rashi

Mercury in Libra (Budh in Tula)

Neutral — takes on its company · Air · Chara · ruled by Venus

Mercury in Libra is in a friend's sign. Libra is ruled by Venus, and Mercury counts Venus a friend.

The relationship runs both ways: Mercury counts Venus a friend, and Venus counts Mercury a friend. A mutual reading is the simpler case — the graha and its host agree about each other, so the placement does not change character depending on which of the two is stronger.

Libra is a chara air sign governing the lower abdomen and kidneys, and Mercury is reckoned neutral, governing intellect, communication, commerce. Whatever Mercury signifies speech, writing, trade, accounts, mathematics, maternal uncles, students — is what this rashi’s restlessness moves along.

The Dignity, Stated Precisely

  • In Libra: in a friend's sign.
  • Mercury’s own signs: Gemini and Virgo.
  • Exalted in: Virgo, deepest at 15°.
  • Debilitated in: Pisces.
  • Moolatrikona: Virgo 16°–20°.
  • Libra’s lord: Venus. Libra exalts Saturn at 20° and debilitates Sun at 10°.

What Mercury Aspects From Libra

Every graha casts a full aspect on the 7th house from itself, and Mercury has no special drishti beyond it, so the 7th is the whole of its reach. Counting from Libra, that lands on:

  • 7th from LibraAries (Mesha), ruled by Mars.

Aries is not one of Mercury’s own rashis, so the single aspect Mercury throws from Libra lands on Mars’s territory. Whose territory it is decides how the aspect is received.

How Far Libra Is From Mercury’s Own Ground

A graha is read partly by how far it has been displaced from the rashi it owns, and that distance is simple counting. Counting inclusively from Gemini and from Virgo, Libra falls as follows:

  • 5th from Geminia trine, the easiest of the distances.
  • 2nd from Virgoa 2/12, the gain-and-loss axis.
  • 2nd from Virgo, the sign of its exaltationa 2/12, the gain-and-loss axis.
  • 8th from Pisces, the sign of its fall — a 6/8 — the shashtashtaka relation, the most awkward of the twelve.
  • Opposite Libra stands Aries, ruled by Mars — the rashi Mercury faces from here, and therefore the one it aspects whatever else it does or does not aspect.

The Company Mercury Keeps in Libra

Dignity runs in both directions, and the rashi has its own roster. Libra runs from 180°00′ to 210°00′ of sidereal longitude — the arc the Sun crosses about Oct 18 – Nov 16 — faces west, is classed male, and as an air sign is of the Shudra varna. Within those thirty degrees:

  • Ruled by Venus.
  • Exalts Saturn at 20° — not Mercury, so the strongest single degree of Libra is not Mercury’s.
  • Debilitates Sun at 10°, a different graha from Mercury.
  • Moolatrikona of Venus, 0°–15°.

So Mercury shares Libra with both an exaltation degree and a debilitation degree belonging to other grahas. A graha sitting close to either point is read against it, which is a reason the exact degree matters more in Libra than in a sign carrying neither. Libra’s own traits — diplomatic, fair-minded, social, indecisive, gracious — are the register in which intellect, communication, commerce gets expressed when Mercury sits here.

The Nine Padas Mercury Crosses in Libra

A rashi is thirty degrees and a pada is three degrees twenty minutes, so every sign holds exactly nine padas — never a round number of nakshatras. Libra holds 3 nakshatras in whole or in part: Chitra (padas 3, 4), Swati and Vishakha (padas 1, 2, 3).

PadaSidereal longitudeNakshatraLordNavamsa
1180°00′183°20′Chitra pada 3MarsLibra
2183°20′186°40′Chitra pada 4MarsScorpio

8203°20′206°40′Vishakha pada 2JupiterTaurus
9206°40′210°00′Vishakha pada 3JupiterGemini

Mercury rules Ashlesha, Jyeshtha, Revati, and none of them falls in Libra. So across all thirty degrees there is no stretch where Mercury has nakshatra-level ownership to fall back on; the whole sign is read through Venus, and through what Venus makes of a guest it counts a friend. The nakshatra lords it does cross here are Mars, Rahu, Jupiter.

When Mercury Is Actually in Libra

This is the part of the page that is not in a textbook. Computed from the DE421 sidereal ephemeris, Mercury occupies Libra for 3 stretches inside 2026 and 2027:

  • 26 September 2026 to 2 December 202667 days, after which Mercury moves on to Scorpio.
  • 21 September 2027 to 21 October 202730 days, after which Mercury moves on to Virgo.
  • 5 November 2027 to 26 November 202721 days, after which Mercury moves on to Scorpio.

Dates rather than clock times, because that is what a placement question needs. The ingress instants are computed and are printed on the monthly readings, where they matter for choosing a day.

Mercury also combusts: within 14° of the Sun when direct, 12° when retrograde — and Mercury is never far from the Sun, so combustion is common. A combust Mercury in Libra is read as weakened whatever the dignity above says, which is the standard case where the textbook verdict and the actual sky disagree.

Reading Mercury in Libra

Mercury signifies speech, writing, trade, accounts, mathematics, maternal uncles, students. In Libra those significations are filtered through a chara air sign ruled by Venus, and the dignity above says how much support they get in the process. In a friend’s sign they are supported without being amplified — a quietly workable placement.

This is not a prediction, and it cannot be one: the house Libra occupies from the ascendant, which of the nine padas above holds the graha, and the running dasha all change the answer. Mercury is reckoned neutral, and it gains in the 1st, 4th, 5th, 9th, 10th and 11th while it struggles in the 6th, 8th and 12th, and any close conjunction with a strong malefic — so Mercury in Libra is a different placement in each of them. Under Kaal Purush Libra is the 7th bhava, so Mercury in the 7th house is the same pairing read from the bhava side, with the Libra transit dated for each of the twelve ascendants.

For what Mercury does when strong and when afflicted, its 17-year mahadasha, and the full remedy set, see the Mercury (Budh) page. The short form: Mercury’s day is Wednesday, its gemstone is Emerald (Panna), its mantra is Om Budhaya Namah, and its deities are Vishnu, and Ganesha for the removal of obstacles to learning.
