graha in rashi
Mercury in Scorpio (Budh in Vrishchika)
Neutral — takes on its company · Water · Sthira · ruled by Mars
Mercury in Scorpio is in a neutral sign. Scorpio is ruled by Mars, and Mercury counts Mars neutral.
The relationship is not mutual, and that is the most useful thing on this page. Mercury regards Mars as neutral, but Mars regards Mercury as an enemy. The classical friendship table is asymmetric, which readers almost always assume it is not. In practice it means Mercury settles into Scorpio more warily than the host intends, so the placement behaves differently depending on which of the two is the stronger graha in the chart.
Scorpio is a sthira water sign governing the pelvis and reproductive organs, and Mercury is reckoned neutral, governing intellect, communication, commerce. Whatever Mercury signifies — speech, writing, trade, accounts, mathematics, maternal uncles, students — is what this rashi’s fixity holds in place.
The Dignity, Stated Precisely
- In Scorpio: in a neutral sign.
- Mercury’s own signs: Gemini and Virgo.
- Exalted in: Virgo, deepest at 15°.
- Debilitated in: Pisces.
- Moolatrikona: Virgo 16°–20°.
- Scorpio’s lord: Mars. Scorpio exalts no graha and debilitates Moon at 3°.
What Mercury Aspects From Scorpio
Every graha casts a full aspect on the 7th house from itself, and Mercury has no special drishti beyond it, so the 7th is the whole of its reach. Counting from Scorpio, that lands on:
- 7th from Scorpio → Taurus (Vrishabha), ruled by Venus.
Taurus is not one of Mercury’s own rashis, so the single aspect Mercury throws from Scorpio lands on Venus’s territory. Whose territory it is decides how the aspect is received.
How Far Scorpio Is From Mercury’s Own Ground
A graha is read partly by how far it has been displaced from the rashi it owns, and that distance is simple counting. Counting inclusively from Gemini and from Virgo, Scorpio falls as follows:
- 6th from Gemini — a 6/8 — the shashtashtaka relation, the most awkward of the twelve.
- 3rd from Virgo — a 3/11, the upachaya pairing.
- 3rd from Virgo, the sign of its exaltation — a 3/11, the upachaya pairing.
- 9th from Pisces, the sign of its fall — a trine, the easiest of the distances.
- Opposite Scorpio stands Taurus, ruled by Venus — the rashi Mercury faces from here, and therefore the one it aspects whatever else it does or does not aspect.
The Company Mercury Keeps in Scorpio
Dignity runs in both directions, and the rashi has its own roster. Scorpio runs from 210°00′ to 240°00′ of sidereal longitude — the arc the Sun crosses about Nov 17 – Dec 15 — faces north, is classed female, and as a water sign is of the Brahmin varna. Within those thirty degrees:
- Ruled by Mars.
- Exalts no graha. Scorpio is one of the rashis with no exaltation degree in it at all, so nothing gains maximum strength here.
- Debilitates Moon at 3°, a different graha from Mercury.
- Holds no moolatrikona. Scorpio contains no graha’s moolatrikona stretch, so there is no privileged arc within it.
So Scorpio carries a fixed dignity point inside it, and the closer Mercury sits to that degree the more the reading is dominated by it rather than by the sign as a whole. Scorpio’s own traits — passionate, determined, perceptive, secretive, intense — are the register in which intellect, communication, commerce gets expressed when Mercury sits here.
The Nine Padas Mercury Crosses in Scorpio
A rashi is thirty degrees and a pada is three degrees twenty minutes, so every sign holds exactly nine padas — never a round number of nakshatras. Scorpio holds 3 nakshatras in whole or in part: Vishakha (pada 4), Anuradha and Jyeshtha.
| Pada | Sidereal longitude | Nakshatra | Lord | Navamsa |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 210°00′–213°20′ | Vishakha pada 4 | Jupiter | Cancer |
| 2 | 213°20′–216°40′ | Anuradha pada 1 | Saturn | Leo |
| 3 | 216°40′–220°00′ | Anuradha pada 2 | Saturn | Virgo |
| 4 | 220°00′–223°20′ | Anuradha pada 3 | Saturn | Libra |
| 5 | 223°20′–226°40′ | Anuradha pada 4 | Saturn | Scorpio |
| 6 | 226°40′–230°00′ | Jyeshtha pada 1 | Mercury ← | Sagittarius |
| 7 | 230°00′–233°20′ | Jyeshtha pada 2 | Mercury ← | Capricorn |
| 8 | 233°20′–236°40′ | Jyeshtha pada 3 | Mercury ← | Aquarius |
| 9 | 236°40′–240°00′ | Jyeshtha pada 4 | Mercury ← | Pisces |
Mercury rules Ashlesha, Jyeshtha, Revati, and one of them falls inside Scorpio: Jyeshtha. Those degrees are the part of Scorpio where Mercury is on its own ground regardless of what the sign lord thinks of it — a nakshatra lordship is a second, finer layer of dignity, and it does not have to agree with the first.
When Mercury Is Actually in Scorpio
This is the part of the page that is not in a textbook. Computed from the DE421 sidereal ephemeris, Mercury occupies Scorpio for 2 stretches inside 2026 and 2027:
- 2 December 2026 to 22 December 2026 — 20 days, after which Mercury moves on to Sagittarius.
- 26 November 2027 to 15 December 2027 — 19 days, after which Mercury moves on to Sagittarius.
Dates rather than clock times, because that is what a placement question needs. The ingress instants are computed and are printed on the monthly readings, where they matter for choosing a day.
Mercury also combusts: within 14° of the Sun when direct, 12° when retrograde — and Mercury is never far from the Sun, so combustion is common. A combust Mercury in Scorpio is read as weakened whatever the dignity above says, which is the standard case where the textbook verdict and the actual sky disagree.
Reading Mercury in Scorpio
Mercury signifies speech, writing, trade, accounts, mathematics, maternal uncles, students. In Scorpio those significations are filtered through a sthira water sign ruled by Mars, and the dignity above says how much support they get in the process. In a neutral sign they are neither helped nor hindered, which makes everything else in the chart decide.
This is not a prediction, and it cannot be one: the house Scorpio occupies from the ascendant, which of the nine padas above holds the graha, and the running dasha all change the answer. Mercury is reckoned neutral, and it gains in the 1st, 4th, 5th, 9th, 10th and 11th while it struggles in the 6th, 8th and 12th, and any close conjunction with a strong malefic — so Mercury in Scorpio is a different placement in each of them. Under Kaal Purush Scorpio is the 8th bhava, so Mercury in the 8th house is the same pairing read from the bhava side, with the Scorpio transit dated for each of the twelve ascendants.
For what Mercury does when strong and when afflicted, its 17-year mahadasha, and the full remedy set, see the Mercury (Budh) page. The short form: Mercury’s day is Wednesday, its gemstone is Emerald (Panna), its mantra is Om Budhaya Namah, and its deities are Vishnu, and Ganesha for the removal of obstacles to learning.
