graha in rashi

Mercury in Cancer (Budh in Karka)

Neutral — takes on its company · Water · Chara · ruled by the Moon

Mercury in Cancer is in an enemy's sign. Cancer is ruled by the Moon, and Mercury counts the Moon an enemy.

The relationship is not mutual, and that is the most useful thing on this page. Mercury regards the Moon as an enemy, but the Moon regards Mercury as a friend. The classical friendship table is asymmetric, which readers almost always assume it is not. In practice it means Mercury settles into Cancer more warily than the host intends, so the placement behaves differently depending on which of the two is the stronger graha in the chart.

Cancer is a chara water sign governing the chest and stomach, and Mercury is reckoned neutral, governing intellect, communication, commerce. Whatever Mercury signifies speech, writing, trade, accounts, mathematics, maternal uncles, students — is what this rashi’s restlessness moves along.

The Dignity, Stated Precisely

  • In Cancer: in an enemy's sign.
  • Mercury’s own signs: Gemini and Virgo.
  • Exalted in: Virgo, deepest at 15°.
  • Debilitated in: Pisces.
  • Moolatrikona: Virgo 16°–20°.
  • Cancer’s lord: Moon. Cancer exalts Jupiter at 5° and debilitates Mars at 28°.

What Mercury Aspects From Cancer

Every graha casts a full aspect on the 7th house from itself, and Mercury has no special drishti beyond it, so the 7th is the whole of its reach. Counting from Cancer, that lands on:

  • 7th from CancerCapricorn (Makara), ruled by Saturn.

Capricorn is not one of Mercury’s own rashis, so the single aspect Mercury throws from Cancer lands on Saturn’s territory. Whose territory it is decides how the aspect is received.

How Far Cancer Is From Mercury’s Own Ground

A graha is read partly by how far it has been displaced from the rashi it owns, and that distance is simple counting. Counting inclusively from Gemini and from Virgo, Cancer falls as follows:

  • 2nd from Geminia 2/12, the gain-and-loss axis.
  • 11th from Virgoa 3/11, the upachaya pairing.
  • 11th from Virgo, the sign of its exaltationa 3/11, the upachaya pairing.
  • 5th from Pisces, the sign of its fall — a trine, the easiest of the distances.
  • Opposite Cancer stands Capricorn, ruled by Saturn — the rashi Mercury faces from here, and therefore the one it aspects whatever else it does or does not aspect.

The Company Mercury Keeps in Cancer

Dignity runs in both directions, and the rashi has its own roster. Cancer runs from 90°00′ to 120°00′ of sidereal longitude — the arc the Sun crosses about Jul 17 – Aug 16 — faces north, is classed female, and as a water sign is of the Brahmin varna. Within those thirty degrees:

  • Ruled by Moon.
  • Exalts Jupiter at 5° — not Mercury, so the strongest single degree of Cancer is not Mercury’s.
  • Debilitates Mars at 28°, a different graha from Mercury.
  • Holds no moolatrikona. Cancer contains no graha’s moolatrikona stretch, so there is no privileged arc within it.

So Mercury shares Cancer with both an exaltation degree and a debilitation degree belonging to other grahas. A graha sitting close to either point is read against it, which is a reason the exact degree matters more in Cancer than in a sign carrying neither. Cancer’s own traits — nurturing, intuitive, emotional, protective, loyal — are the register in which intellect, communication, commerce gets expressed when Mercury sits here.

The Nine Padas Mercury Crosses in Cancer

A rashi is thirty degrees and a pada is three degrees twenty minutes, so every sign holds exactly nine padas — never a round number of nakshatras. Cancer holds 3 nakshatras in whole or in part: Punarvasu (pada 4), Pushya and Ashlesha.

PadaSidereal longitudeNakshatraLordNavamsa
190°00′93°20′Punarvasu pada 4JupiterCancer
293°20′96°40′Pushya pada 1SaturnLeo
396°40′100°00′Pushya pada 2SaturnVirgo
4100°00′103°20′Pushya pada 3SaturnLibra
5103°20′106°40′Pushya pada 4SaturnScorpio
6106°40′110°00′Ashlesha pada 1MercurySagittarius
7110°00′113°20′Ashlesha pada 2MercuryCapricorn
8113°20′116°40′Ashlesha pada 3MercuryAquarius
9116°40′120°00′Ashlesha pada 4MercuryPisces

Mercury rules Ashlesha, Jyeshtha, Revati, and one of them falls inside Cancer: Ashlesha. Those degrees are the part of Cancer where Mercury is on its own ground regardless of what the sign lord thinks of it — a nakshatra lordship is a second, finer layer of dignity, and it does not have to agree with the first. That matters here, because it gives Mercury a foothold in a sign whose lord it counts an enemy.

When Mercury Is Actually in Cancer

This is the part of the page that is not in a textbook. Computed from the DE421 sidereal ephemeris, Mercury occupies Cancer for 3 stretches inside 2026 and 2027:

  • 22 June 2026 to 7 July 202615 days, after which Mercury moves on to Gemini.
  • 5 August 2026 to 22 August 202617 days, after which Mercury moves on to Leo.
  • 30 July 2027 to 14 August 202715 days, after which Mercury moves on to Leo.

Dates rather than clock times, because that is what a placement question needs. The ingress instants are computed and are printed on the monthly readings, where they matter for choosing a day.

Mercury also combusts: within 14° of the Sun when direct, 12° when retrograde — and Mercury is never far from the Sun, so combustion is common. A combust Mercury in Cancer is read as weakened whatever the dignity above says, which is the standard case where the textbook verdict and the actual sky disagree.

Reading Mercury in Cancer

Mercury signifies speech, writing, trade, accounts, mathematics, maternal uncles, students. In Cancer those significations are filtered through a chara water sign ruled by the Moon, and the dignity above says how much support they get in the process. In an enemy’s sign they meet resistance from the host, and the results tend to arrive late or in a form the native did not ask for.

This is not a prediction, and it cannot be one: the house Cancer occupies from the ascendant, which of the nine padas above holds the graha, and the running dasha all change the answer. Mercury is reckoned neutral, and it gains in the 1st, 4th, 5th, 9th, 10th and 11th while it struggles in the 6th, 8th and 12th, and any close conjunction with a strong malefic — so Mercury in Cancer is a different placement in each of them. Under Kaal Purush Cancer is the 4th bhava, so Mercury in the 4th house is the same pairing read from the bhava side, with the Cancer transit dated for each of the twelve ascendants.

For what Mercury does when strong and when afflicted, its 17-year mahadasha, and the full remedy set, see the Mercury (Budh) page. The short form: Mercury’s day is Wednesday, its gemstone is Emerald (Panna), its mantra is Om Budhaya Namah, and its deities are Vishnu, and Ganesha for the removal of obstacles to learning.
