Virgo is the one rashi where a planet both owns the sign and is exalted in it: Mercury rules Virgo and reaches exaltation at 15 degrees, with its moolatrikona immediately after. Note the symmetry with Pisces (Meena), the sign exactly opposite: Mercury is exalted here and debilitated there, at the same degree. That mirroring is exact across all six axes of the zodiac, and it is why an astrologer reading a planet in Kanya always looks at the seventh house from it as well.

The Navamsa column is the D-9 chart placement of each pada — a separate division from the rashi, read for marriage and for a planet's underlying strength. A planet can look well placed in the rashi chart and thin in the navamsa, which is exactly why the two are read together. Both ends of Virgo are cut: Uttara Phalguni (padas 2, 3, 4) and Chitra (padas 1, 2), with the remaining padas of each sitting in the neighbouring rashi, and only Hasta falls wholly inside. Nine of the 27 nakshatras are split this way, and Virgo is one of the six rashis that take two of them.

The Sun enters sidereal Kanya at Kanya Sankranti, around Sep 17, and stays about a month. This is a real astronomical event rather than a calendar convention, and it is why the sidereal dates above are the ones a Vedic reading uses — Kanya Sankranti is the day of Vishwakarma Puja, when tools and machinery are worshipped.
The tropical range you will see elsewhere, Aug 23 – Sep 22, is set from the spring equinox instead of from the stars. The two definitions of 0° Aries drifted apart at roughly a degree every 72 years and now differ by about 24 degrees — the ayanamsa. Neither is a mistake; they answer different questions, and this site answers the sidereal one throughout.

Is my Virgo horoscope read from my Sun sign or my Moon sign?+

This is the single biggest difference between a Vedic reading and the Western one most people have seen: Jyotish treats the Chandra rashi — the sign the Moon occupied at birth — as primary, and reads the Sun sign as a secondary indicator of vitality and standing. Why are the Virgo dates here different from the ones I usually see?+
Because there are two zodiacs and they no longer line up. Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, which pins 0° Aries to the spring equinox; Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which is fixed to the actual stars. The equinox drifts against the stars by about one degree every 72 years, and the gap has now opened to roughly 24 degrees — that offset is the ayanamsa. So tropical Virgo runs Aug 23 – Sep 22 while sidereal Virgo runs Sep 17 – Oct 17, and the Sun's actual entry into Kanya is Kanya Sankranti. Both sets are given on this page: the tropical dates because they are what you recognise, the sidereal ones because they are what the reading is computed from.
Which planet rules Virgo?+
Mercury. In Jyotish Mercury owns Kanya, and its moolatrikona — the stretch where it is most comfortably itself — falls at Mercury, 16°–20°. That matters practically: a Virgo reading is really a reading of where Mercury sits in your chart, which house it occupies, what aspects it, and whether it is currently running a dasha period. The sign sets the terms; the lord decides the outcome.
Which nakshatras fall in Virgo?+
Three, always. Uttara Phalguni (padas 2, 3, 4, ruled by Sun); Hasta (all four padas, ruled by Moon); Chitra (padas 1, 2, ruled by Mars). The arithmetic is exact rather than approximate: 27 nakshatras of four padas each is 108 padas, and 108 divided among 12 rashis is nine padas per rashi with nothing left over. Two of these are split across rashi boundaries here — Uttara Phalguni (padas 2, 3, 4) and Chitra (padas 1, 2) — so two people can share a nakshatra and still sit in different rashis. Your nakshatra decides your Vimshottari dasha sequence, so it matters more for timing than the rashi does.
