Rahu in Aries (Rahu in Mesha)
Malefic (shadow) · Fire · Chara · ruled by Mars
Rahu in Aries is in an enemy's sign. Aries is ruled by Mars, and Rahu counts Mars an enemy.
The relationship is not mutual, and that is the most useful thing on this page. Rahu regards Mars as an enemy, but Mars regards Rahu as neutral. The classical friendship table is asymmetric, which readers almost always assume it is not. In practice it means Rahu settles into Aries more warily than the host intends, so the placement behaves differently depending on which of the two is the stronger graha in the chart.
Aries is a chara fire sign governing the head, and Rahu is reckoned malefic, governing desires, illusions, foreign lands, sudden gains. Whatever Rahu signifies — foreign lands and foreigners, technology, aviation, speculation, politics, sudden and unearned gain — is what this rashi’s restlessness moves along.
The Dignity, Stated Precisely
- In Aries: in an enemy's sign.
- Rahu’s own sign: None — Rahu co-lords Aquarius and is said to act as its dispositor. The standard scheme gives the nodes no rashi of their own; what is quoted is a co-lordship, and it is not universally accepted.
- Exalted in: Taurus by the most common reckoning; Gemini in others.
- Debilitated in: Scorpio by the same reckoning; Sagittarius in others.
- Moolatrikona: Not assigned in the standard system.
- Aries’s lord: Mars. Aries exalts Sun at 10° and debilitates Saturn at 20°.
One honest caveat, because it applies to Rahu specifically. The standard exaltation table covers the seven grahas and does not assign the nodes a dignity at all; what is quoted above is the most common reckoning, and other traditions give a different sign. The rashi tables on this site record only the seven, which is why they and the graha tables disagree here and nowhere else. Treat a nodal “exaltation” as one school’s convention rather than a settled fact, and weigh the node by house, dispositor and dasha instead.
What Rahu Aspects From Aries
Rahu is given no aspect of its own by the classical texts, and the traditions that do assign one do not agree with each other — many lend it Jupiter’s trinal 5th, 7th and 9th, others none at all. So this page does not print a list of signs Rahu aspects from Aries: doing so would be asserting a convention as a fact. What Rahu in Aries does do is take on the character of its dispositor, Mars, and act through wherever Mars sits in the chart. That is the reading to make, and it needs the whole chart.
The Axis: Rahu in Aries Means Ketu in Libra
The nodes are not two independent bodies. They are the two ends of one line — the intersections of the Moon’s orbit with the ecliptic — and they are always exactly six rashis apart. So Rahu in Aries is not a placement you can read on its own: it fixes Ketu in Libra, ruled by Venus, and the axis has to be read as a pair.
That gives this particular axis two dispositors: Mars for Rahu and Venus for Ketu. Here they are different grahas, so the two ends of the axis answer to different masters and can be in very unequal condition. Whichever end carries the stronger dispositor tends to be where the axis actually delivers, and the classical reading is that Rahu amplifies while Ketu empties — the same axis produces excess at one end and detachment at the other.
For the other end of this axis, see Ketu in Libra.
How Far Aries Is From Rahu’s Own Ground
A graha is read partly by how far it has been displaced from the rashi it owns, and that distance is simple counting. Counting inclusively from Aquarius (a co-lordship rather than an ownership, as noted above), Aries falls as follows:
- 3rd from Aquarius — a 3/11, the upachaya pairing.
- 12th from Taurus, the sign of its exaltation (on the commoner reckoning — this one is disputed) — a 2/12, the gain-and-loss axis.
- 6th from Scorpio, the sign of its fall — a 6/8 — the shashtashtaka relation, the most awkward of the twelve.
- Opposite Aries stands Libra, ruled by Venus — the rashi Rahu faces from here, and therefore the one it aspects whatever else it does or does not aspect.
The Company Rahu Keeps in Aries
Dignity runs in both directions, and the rashi has its own roster. Aries runs from 0°00′ to 30°00′ of sidereal longitude — the arc the Sun crosses about Apr 14 – May 14 — faces east, is classed male, and as a fire sign is of the Kshatriya varna. Within those thirty degrees:
- Ruled by Mars.
- Exalts Sun at 10° — not Rahu, so the strongest single degree of Aries is not Rahu’s.
- Debilitates Saturn at 20°, a different graha from Rahu.
- Moolatrikona of Mars, 0°–12°.
So Rahu shares Aries with both an exaltation degree and a debilitation degree belonging to other grahas. A graha sitting close to either point is read against it, which is a reason the exact degree matters more in Aries than in a sign carrying neither. Aries’s own traits — courageous, energetic, assertive, impulsive, optimistic — are the register in which desires, illusions, foreign lands, sudden gains gets expressed when Rahu sits here.
The Nine Padas Rahu Crosses in Aries
A rashi is thirty degrees and a pada is three degrees twenty minutes, so every sign holds exactly nine padas — never a round number of nakshatras. Aries holds 3 nakshatras in whole or in part: Ashwini, Bharani and Krittika (pada 1).
| Pada | Sidereal longitude | Nakshatra | Lord | Navamsa |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 0°00′–3°20′ | Ashwini pada 1 | Ketu | Aries |
| 2 | 3°20′–6°40′ | Ashwini pada 2 | Ketu | Taurus |
| 3 | 6°40′–10°00′ | Ashwini pada 3 | Ketu | Gemini |
| 4 | 10°00′–13°20′ | Ashwini pada 4 | Ketu | Cancer |
| 5 | 13°20′–16°40′ | Bharani pada 1 | Venus | Leo |
| 6 | 16°40′–20°00′ | Bharani pada 2 | Venus | Virgo |
| 7 | 20°00′–23°20′ | Bharani pada 3 | Venus | Libra |
| 8 | 23°20′–26°40′ | Bharani pada 4 | Venus | Scorpio |
| 9 | 26°40′–30°00′ | Krittika pada 1 | Sun | Sagittarius |
Rahu rules Ardra, Swati, Shatabhisha, and none of them falls in Aries. So across all thirty degrees there is no stretch where Rahu has nakshatra-level ownership to fall back on; the whole sign is read through Mars, and through what Mars makes of a guest it counts neutral. The nakshatra lords it does cross here are Ketu, Venus, Sun.
When Rahu Is Actually in Aries
Here is the honest answer, and it is a computed one: Rahu does not enter Aries at any point in 2026 or 2027. The DE421 ephemeris this site computes from covers those two years, and across the whole of it Rahu never crosses into this rashi.
The negative is worth turning into a measurement, because it is one. On 1 January 2026, the first day the tables cover, Rahu stands in Aquarius; by 1 January 2028 it has reached Capricorn — one sign backwards, which is the only direction the nodes travel. From Capricorn, Aries is a further nine signs backwards — that is how much of the zodiac still separates Rahu from this rashi when the tables run out.
That is a property of orbital period rather than an accident. Rahu takes about eighteen years to travel the zodiac, so it spends roughly eighteen months in each sign and a two-year window can only ever reach a few of them. This page is therefore about the placement as a natal condition — what it means in a chart born with it — and not about a transit you can wait for.
Where Rahu does go in this window is worth knowing, and it is on the Rahu page; the monthly readings under our rashifal archive date every ingress it does make.
Reading Rahu in Aries
Rahu signifies foreign lands and foreigners, technology, aviation, speculation, politics, sudden and unearned gain. In Aries those significations are filtered through a chara fire sign ruled by Mars, and the dignity above says how much support they get in the process. In an enemy’s sign they meet resistance from the host, and the results tend to arrive late or in a form the native did not ask for.
This is not a prediction, and it cannot be one: the house Aries occupies from the ascendant, which of the nine padas above holds the graha, and the running dasha all change the answer. Rahu is reckoned malefic and is a shadow graha with no disc of its own, and it gains in the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th while it struggles in the 1st, 2nd, 5th, 7th, 8th and 9th — so Rahu in Aries is a different placement in each of them. Under Kaal Purush Aries is the 1st bhava, so Rahu in the 1st house is the same pairing read from the bhava side, with the Aries transit dated for each of the twelve ascendants.
For what Rahu does when strong and when afflicted, its 18-year mahadasha, and the full remedy set, see the Rahu (Rahu) page. The short form: Rahu’s day is Saturday, its gemstone is Hessonite (Gomed), its mantra is Om Raam Rahave Namah, and its deities are Durga, and Bhairava.
