Ketu in the 3rd House
सहज भाव · Ketu · Gemini under Kaal Purush · in a neutral sign
Ketu, a shadowy malefic graha signifying moksha, past-life skill, renunciation, occult knowledge, medicine, flags and banners, placed in the bhava of courage, siblings, short travels, communication, hands and arms, neighbours, hobbies — that pairing is the whole of what Ketu in the 3rd house means before a chart is opened. The 3rd house does not look to Ketu for its significations though — it looks to Mars for courage, Mercury for communication — so Ketu here colours this bhava’s matters without representing them, and the karaka’s own condition has to be read separately from this placement.
Under Kaal Purush the 3rd Is Gemini
In the natural chart the 3rd house is Gemini, so Ketu here is in a neutral sign. The bhava answers to Mercury, and the two agree about each other: each counts the other neutral, so nothing in Ketu’s dealings with the lord of the 3rd pulls against itself — the terms on which this bhava delivers younger siblings are set by Mercury’s own placement alone. Gemini is spanned by the third and fourth padas of Mrigashira, Ardra and the first, second and third padas of Punarvasu, lorded in that order by Mars, Rahu and Jupiter. None of the three is Ketu, so Ketu in the 3rd always reports to another graha at the nakshatra level, and the pada decides which of the three — a finer cut on younger siblings than the rashi gives, and the reason two people with Ketu in the same 3rd house read differently.
Ketu sits outside the reckoning that verdict comes from. No standard table exalts Ketu anywhere, and the schools that do place Ketu somewhere disagree over where: the exaltation entry reads “Scorpio by the most common reckoning; Sagittarius in others” and the debilitation entry “Taurus by the same reckoning; Gemini in others”. Calling Ketu in a neutral sign in Gemini therefore says how Ketu stands to Mercury, lord of the 3rd, and nothing about a dignity Ketu holds in its own right. Read Ketu here from what the 3rd governs, younger siblings, from where Mercury sits, and from the 7 years Ketu runs its mahadasha — which is what the rest of this page does.
What the 3rd House’s Classification Does to Ketu
The 3rd is classified upachaya (malefics gain here); apoklima (cadent); dusthana in some traditions. Set against Ketu, a shadowy malefic graha, that classification produces:
- Dusthana. The 3rd is a house of difficulty, so what suffers is detachment, moksha, past karma, intuition — while what gets used is Ketu’s capacity to endure younger siblings rather than to enjoy it.
- Upachaya. The 3rd is one of the four growing houses, where the tradition holds that malefics gain. Ketu is reckoned shadowy malefic, so the rule applies directly: on younger siblings a difficult graha is an advantage rather than a cost.
- And a disagreement. Some traditions count the 3rd a dusthana and others do not. It changes the reading of Ketu here materially, so it is left standing as a disagreement rather than resolved in one direction.
Ketu’s own preferred bhavas are the 3rd, 6th, 11th, 12th, and the 3rd is among them — Ketu is the one graha that does genuinely well in the 12th, the house of moksha. So the classification of the 3rd and the disposition of Ketu point the same way, which is not true of most of the 108 combinations.
Directional strength. Digbala is not defined for Ketu. The four grantor bhavas name the seven classical grahas and no node, and Ketu, having no disc, has no direction in which to be bright. On the 3rd that is a measurement which does not reach Ketu rather than one Ketu fails — what decides Ketu in the 3rd is that bhava’s own subject, younger siblings, the condition of Mercury, and the 7-year Ketu mahadasha.
Which Bhavas Ketu Reaches From the 3rd
No classical text gives Ketu a drishti of its own, and the traditions that supply Ketu one disagree: some lend Ketu the aspects of Mercury, this bhava’s lord, and some give Ketu none at all. So this page prints no aspect list for Ketu in the 3rd, the bhava of courage, siblings, short travels, communication, hands and arms, neighbours, hobbies — a list would state one school’s convention as settled. What Ketu does from the 3rd instead is take the colour of Mercury and work through wherever Mercury sits, which makes the reach of Ketu here exactly as wide as Mercury’s own placement and no wider.
And it is never one placement. Ketu and Rahu are the two ends of one line, six bhavas apart always, so Ketu in the 3rd fixes Rahu in the 9th, the bhava of fortune, dharma, higher education, father, long-distance travel, gurus, philosophy. The axis is read as Ketu inflating the 3rd while Rahu empties the 9th — detachment, moksha, past karma, intuition pressed onto younger siblings, and desires, illusions, foreign lands, sudden gains thinning out of luck and fortune, at once. The other end is at Rahu in the 9th house.
Where the 3rd Sits Relative to Ketu’s Own Bhavas
- Scorpio, which Ketu owns, is the 8th — a 6/8, the shashtashtaka distance the tradition singles out from the 3rd.
- Ketu exalts in Scorpio, the 8th on the commoner reckoning — a 6/8, the shashtashtaka distance the tradition singles out from the 3rd. And Ketu owns Scorpio as well as exalting in it, so the 8th is the one bhava carrying both of Ketu’s claims at once.
- Ketu falls in Taurus, the 2nd on the commoner reckoning — a 2/12, the gain-and-loss pairing from the 3rd.
- Bhavat bhavam from the 3rd gives the 5th, intelligence, children, creativity, romance, speculation, past-life merit (Poorva Punya) — a Parashari extension, read as Ketu’s secondary indicator for the same matters.
- Mercury, dispositor of the 3rd, also owns the 6th — so whatever Ketu does in the 3rd is routed through a lord whose other business is health and diseases.
The body reading. The 3rd bhava is arms, shoulders, hands, collarbone, right ear and the upper respiratory tract, and Ketu is assigned no organ at all. The tradition gives Ketu symptoms instead of tissues, and the list recorded for Ketu is undiagnosable illness, skin disease and immune disorder. So Ketu in the 3rd is read as those presenting at arms rather than as damage done to it. A framework for reading a chart, not a diagnosis.
When Ketu Is Actually in Your 3rd House
Your ascendant decides which rashi is your 3rd house, and here the ephemeris returns a sharper answer than any essay. Ketu occupies only 2 rashis across 2026–2027, so Ketu transits the 3rd house for only 2 of the twelve ascendants in that whole period — Taurus, Gemini lagnas. For the other 10, general advice about Ketu in the 3rd house describes nothing that is happening. The longest unbroken stretch is 338 days, for a Gemini ascendant, whose 3rd house is Leo.
| Ascendant | Your 3rd house is | Ketu there in 2026–2027 |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | Gemini | not in these two years |
| Taurus | Cancer | from 5 December 2026 |
| Gemini | Leo | to 5 December 2026 |
| Cancer | Virgo | not in these two years |
| Leo | Libra | not in these two years |
| Virgo | Scorpio | not in these two years |
| Libra | Sagittarius | not in these two years |
| Scorpio | Capricorn | not in these two years |
| Sagittarius | Aquarius | not in these two years |
| Capricorn | Pisces | not in these two years |
| Aquarius | Aries | not in these two years |
| Pisces | Taurus | not in these two years |
Sign ingresses computed from the DE421 ephemeris, sidereal Lahiri, as days rather than instants: the ingresses of the slower bodies shift by hours between one ayanamsa and the next, so a printed minute would be false precision. “From” or “to” marks a spell already running when the tables open, or still running when they close.
Reading the 3rd in an Actual Chart
Everything above is structural — true of Ketu in the 3rd in any chart. Four things decide what it does in yours, in this order. The rashi Ketu actually occupies: the 3rd house is Gemini for an Aries ascendant and for no other, because Kaal Purush is the Aries-lagna chart — the table above gives the other eleven. The lord of your 3rd house and its condition, because a bhava delivers through its lord and not through its occupant. The aspects onto Ketu there. And the dasha — Ketu’s mahadasha runs 7 years, and a placement is largely dormant until its own period does.

Is Ketu in Your 3rd House?
The table needs one thing from you — your ascendant. A free kundli gives you that, the rashi Ketu occupies, its dignity there, and the dasha you are running: the four things this page says decide the reading.
