Ketu in the 1st House
तनु भाव · Ketu · Aries under Kaal Purush · in a friend's sign
Ketu, a shadowy malefic graha signifying moksha, past-life skill, renunciation, occult knowledge, medicine, flags and banners, placed in the bhava of self, body, personality, life path, first impressions, head and physical appearance — that pairing is the whole of what Ketu in the 1st house means before a chart is opened. The 1st house does not look to Ketu for its significations though — it looks to Sun, and the Lagna lord itself — so Ketu here colours this bhava’s matters without representing them, and the karaka’s own condition has to be read separately from this placement.
Under Kaal Purush the 1st Is Aries
In the natural chart the 1st house is Aries, so Ketu here is in a friend's sign. The bhava answers to Mars, and the two do not read each other the same way: Ketu counts Mars a friend, while Mars counts Ketu neutral — so whichever of the two is the stronger in a given chart changes what the 1st delivers on personal identity, not merely how much of it arrives. Aries is spanned by Ashwini, Bharani and the first pada of Krittika, lorded in that order by Ketu, Venus and the Sun. Ketu lords Ashwini among the three, so Ketu in the 1st is its own nakshatra dispositor when it falls anywhere in that nakshatra — the one arrangement in which nothing at all mediates between Ketu and this bhava’s personal identity.
Ketu sits outside the reckoning that verdict comes from. No standard table exalts Ketu anywhere, and the schools that do place Ketu somewhere disagree over where: the exaltation entry reads “Scorpio by the most common reckoning; Sagittarius in others” and the debilitation entry “Taurus by the same reckoning; Gemini in others”. Calling Ketu in a friend's sign in Aries therefore says how Ketu stands to Mars, lord of the 1st, and nothing about a dignity Ketu holds in its own right. Read Ketu here from what the 1st governs, personal identity, from where Mars sits, and from the 7 years Ketu runs its mahadasha — which is what the rest of this page does.
What the 1st House’s Classification Does to Ketu
The 1st is classified kendra (angular); trikona (trine). Set against Ketu, a shadowy malefic graha, that classification produces:
- Kendra. The 1st is angular, so Ketu here works on a platform — whatever it does shows outwardly in the life rather than staying internal.
- Trikona. The 1st is a trine, the most auspicious of the groups, so Ketu is likelier to give its better significations here than its worse ones.
Ketu is documented as struggling in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th, the 1st included — Ketu on the ascendant weakens self-definition and in the 7th it hollows out partnership. Read that as where the effort goes in the 1st, not as a verdict: Ketu’s dispositor and the dasha decide the outcome.
Directional strength. Digbala is not defined for Ketu. The four grantor bhavas name the seven classical grahas and no node, and Ketu, having no disc, has no direction in which to be bright. On the 1st that is a measurement which does not reach Ketu rather than one Ketu fails — what decides Ketu in the 1st is that bhava’s own subject, personal identity, the condition of Mars, and the 7-year Ketu mahadasha.
Which Bhavas Ketu Reaches From the 1st
No classical text gives Ketu a drishti of its own, and the traditions that supply Ketu one disagree: some lend Ketu the aspects of Mars, this bhava’s lord, and some give Ketu none at all. So this page prints no aspect list for Ketu in the 1st, the bhava of self, body, personality, life path, first impressions, head and physical appearance — a list would state one school’s convention as settled. What Ketu does from the 1st instead is take the colour of Mars and work through wherever Mars sits, which makes the reach of Ketu here exactly as wide as Mars’s own placement and no wider.
And it is never one placement. Ketu and Rahu are the two ends of one line, six bhavas apart always, so Ketu in the 1st fixes Rahu in the 7th, the bhava of marriage, life partner, business partnerships, public dealings, contracts, open enemies. The axis is read as Ketu inflating the 1st while Rahu empties the 7th — detachment, moksha, past karma, intuition pressed onto personal identity, and desires, illusions, foreign lands, sudden gains thinning out of spouse / partner, at once. The other end is at Rahu in the 7th house.
Where the 1st Sits Relative to Ketu’s Own Bhavas
- Scorpio, which Ketu owns, is the 8th — a 6/8, the shashtashtaka distance the tradition singles out from the 1st.
- Ketu exalts in Scorpio, the 8th on the commoner reckoning — a 6/8, the shashtashtaka distance the tradition singles out from the 1st. And Ketu owns Scorpio as well as exalting in it, so the 8th is the one bhava carrying both of Ketu’s claims at once.
- Ketu falls in Taurus, the 2nd on the commoner reckoning — a 2/12, the gain-and-loss pairing from the 1st.
- Bhavat bhavam from the 1st gives the 1st — itself. Counting the 1st again from the 1st returns to the 1st, which happens for the 1st and the 7th alone and is why those two are read as a closed pair; for Ketu it means the secondary indicator and the primary one are the same bhava.
- Mars, dispositor of the 1st, also owns the 8th — so whatever Ketu does in the 1st is routed through a lord whose other business is longevity.
The body reading. The 1st bhava is head, brain, skull, complexion and overall constitution, and Ketu is assigned no organ at all. The tradition gives Ketu symptoms instead of tissues, and the list recorded for Ketu is undiagnosable illness, skin disease and immune disorder. So Ketu in the 1st is read as those presenting at head rather than as damage done to it. A framework for reading a chart, not a diagnosis.
When Ketu Is Actually in Your 1st House
Your ascendant decides which rashi is your 1st house, and here the ephemeris returns a sharper answer than any essay. Ketu occupies only 2 rashis across 2026–2027, so Ketu transits the 1st house for only 2 of the twelve ascendants in that whole period — Cancer, Leo lagnas. For the other 10, general advice about Ketu in the 1st house describes nothing that is happening. The longest unbroken stretch is 338 days, for a Leo ascendant, whose 1st house is Leo.
| Ascendant | Your 1st house is | Ketu there in 2026–2027 |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | Aries | not in these two years |
| Taurus | Taurus | not in these two years |
| Gemini | Gemini | not in these two years |
| Cancer | Cancer | from 5 December 2026 |
| Leo | Leo | to 5 December 2026 |
| Virgo | Virgo | not in these two years |
| Libra | Libra | not in these two years |
| Scorpio | Scorpio | not in these two years |
| Sagittarius | Sagittarius | not in these two years |
| Capricorn | Capricorn | not in these two years |
| Aquarius | Aquarius | not in these two years |
| Pisces | Pisces | not in these two years |
Sign ingresses computed from the DE421 ephemeris, sidereal Lahiri, as days rather than instants: the ingresses of the slower bodies shift by hours between one ayanamsa and the next, so a printed minute would be false precision. “From” or “to” marks a spell already running when the tables open, or still running when they close.
Reading the 1st in an Actual Chart
Everything above is structural — true of Ketu in the 1st in any chart. Four things decide what it does in yours, in this order. The rashi Ketu actually occupies: the 1st house is Aries for an Aries ascendant and for no other, because Kaal Purush is the Aries-lagna chart — the table above gives the other eleven. The lord of your 1st house and its condition, because a bhava delivers through its lord and not through its occupant. The aspects onto Ketu there. And the dasha — Ketu’s mahadasha runs 7 years, and a placement is largely dormant until its own period does. Where a graha sits in a bhava it is documented as struggling in, as Ketu does in the 1st, the dasha is what decides whether that reads as difficulty or merely as absence.

Is Ketu in Your 1st House?
The table needs one thing from you — your ascendant. A free kundli gives you that, the rashi Ketu occupies, its dignity there, and the dasha you are running: the four things this page says decide the reading.
