graha in bhava

Sun in the 3rd House

सहज भाव · Surya · Gemini under Kaal Purush · in a neutral sign

The Sun, a mild malefic graha signifying father, government, authority, the soul (atma), medicine, administration, placed in the bhava of courage, siblings, short travels, communication, hands and arms, neighbours, hobbies — that pairing is the whole of what the Sun in the 3rd house means before a chart is opened. The 3rd house does not look to the Sun for its significations though — it looks to Mars for courage, Mercury for communication — so the Sun here colours this bhava’s matters without representing them, and the karaka’s own condition has to be read separately from this placement.

Under Kaal Purush the 3rd Is Gemini

In the natural chart the 3rd house is Gemini, so the Sun here is in a neutral sign. The bhava answers to Mercury, and the two do not read each other the same way: the Sun counts Mercury neutral, while Mercury counts the Sun a friend — so whichever of the two is the stronger in a given chart changes what the 3rd delivers on younger siblings, not merely how much of it arrives. Gemini is spanned by the third and fourth padas of Mrigashira, Ardra and the first, second and third padas of Punarvasu, lorded in that order by Mars, Rahu and Jupiter. None of the three is the Sun, so the Sun in the 3rd always reports to another graha at the nakshatra level, and the pada decides which of the three — a finer cut on younger siblings than the rashi gives, and the reason two people with the Sun in the same 3rd house read differently.

What the 3rd House’s Classification Does to the Sun

The 3rd is classified upachaya (malefics gain here); apoklima (cadent); dusthana in some traditions. Set against the Sun, a mild malefic graha, that classification produces:

  • Dusthana. The 3rd is a house of difficulty, so what suffers is soul, ego, vitality, leadership, father — while what gets used is the Sun’s capacity to endure younger siblings rather than to enjoy it.
  • Upachaya. The 3rd is one of the four growing houses, where the tradition holds that malefics gain. The Sun is reckoned mild malefic, so the rule applies directly: on younger siblings a difficult graha is an advantage rather than a cost.
  • And a disagreement. Some traditions count the 3rd a dusthana and others do not. It changes the reading of the Sun here materially, so it is left standing as a disagreement rather than resolved in one direction.

The Sun is documented as doing well in the 1st, 5th, 9th, 10th, 11th and badly in the 4th, 7th, 12th, and the 3rd is in neither list. That absence is worth something: with no inherited verdict about the Sun here, the reading of the 3rd falls entirely to the rashi, the dispositor and the dasha.

Directional strength. The Sun gains digbala in the 10th, which is a 6/8, the shashtashtaka distance the tradition singles out from the 3rd — so in the 3rd the directional component of the Sun’s strength has to be made up elsewhere in the shadbala reckoning.

Which Bhavas the Sun Reaches From the 3rd

The Sun casts only the drishti every graha has, the 7th from itself, which from the 3rd means it reaches one bhava:

  • The 9th, fortune, dharma, higher education, father, long-distance travel, gurus, philosophy — the 7th from the 3rd. The Sun is documented as doing well in the 9th, so this aspect strengthens a bhava it already suits.

Where the 3rd Sits Relative to the Sun’s Own Bhavas

  • Leo, which the Sun owns, is the 5tha 3/11, the upachaya pairing from the 3rd.
  • the Sun exalts in Aries, the 1sta 3/11, the upachaya pairing from the 3rd.
  • the Sun falls in Libra, the 7tha trine, the most supportive of the distances from the 3rd.
  • Bhavat bhavam from the 3rd gives the 5th, intelligence, children, creativity, romance, speculation, past-life merit (Poorva Punya) — a Parashari extension, read as the Sun’s secondary indicator for the same matters.
  • Mercury, dispositor of the 3rd, also owns the 6th — so whatever the Sun does in the 3rd is routed through a lord whose other business is health and diseases.

The body reading. The 3rd bhava is arms, shoulders, hands, collarbone, right ear and the upper respiratory tract, while the Sun governs heart, eyes, bones, head, and general vitality (ojas); medical astrology reads the 3rd for the Sun where those two overlap, and their not overlapping is as informative as their doing so. A framework for reading a chart, not a diagnosis.

When the Sun Is Actually in Your 3rd House

Your ascendant decides which rashi is your 3rd house, and the ephemeris knows exactly when the Sun is in it. The Sun covers all twelve rashis inside 2026–2027, so the 3rd-house transit happens for every ascendant — what differs is when, and for how long. The longest unbroken stretch in the table below is 32 days, and 2 ascendants are level on it: Aries, for whom the 3rd house is Gemini; and Taurus, for whom the 3rd house is Cancer.

Sign ingresses computed from the DE421 ephemeris, sidereal Lahiri, as days rather than instants: the ingresses of the slower bodies shift by hours between one ayanamsa and the next, so a printed minute would be false precision. “From” or “to” marks a spell already running when the tables open, or still running when they close.

Reading the 3rd in an Actual Chart

Everything above is structural — true of the Sun in the 3rd in any chart. Four things decide what it does in yours, in this order. The rashi the Sun actually occupies: the 3rd house is Gemini for an Aries ascendant and for no other, because Kaal Purush is the Aries-lagna chart — the table above gives the other eleven. The lord of your 3rd house and its condition, because a bhava delivers through its lord and not through its occupant. The aspects onto the Sun there. And the dashathe Sun’s mahadasha runs 6 years, and a placement is largely dormant until its own period does.

The Other Grahas in the 3rd House

The Sun in the Other Bhavas

For the doctrine behind the terms above — what a kendra is, how digbala is reckoned, the bhava’s own strong and afflicted readings and its remedies — see the 3rd house in full. For the Sun itself, its dignities, dasha and remedies, see the Sun, and for the Kaal Purush placement in detail, the Sun in Gemini.

Is the Sun in Your 3rd House?

The table needs one thing from you — your ascendant. A free kundli gives you that, the rashi the Sun occupies, its dignity there, and the dasha you are running: the four things this page says decide the reading.
