Mars in the 3rd House

Mars, a malefic graha signifying younger siblings, land and property, weapons, surgery, engineering, the armed forces, placed in the bhava of courage, siblings, short travels, communication, hands and arms, neighbours, hobbies — that pairing is the whole of what Mars in the 3rd house means before a chart is opened. It is a closer fit than most: the 3rd house counts Mars among its own natural significators, the karaka it is read through for courage. A significator sitting in the bhava it signifies is read more literally than any other placement, because the graha and the house are asking the same question.

Under Kaal Purush the 3rd Is Gemini

In the natural chart the 3rd house is Gemini, so Mars here is in an enemy's sign. The bhava answers to Mercury, and the two do not read each other the same way: Mars counts Mercury an enemy, while Mercury counts Mars neutral — so whichever of the two is the stronger in a given chart changes what the 3rd delivers on younger siblings, not merely how much of it arrives. Gemini is spanned by the third and fourth padas of Mrigashira, Ardra and the first, second and third padas of Punarvasu, lorded in that order by Mars, Rahu and Jupiter. • Upachaya. The 3rd is one of the four growing houses, where the tradition holds that malefics gain. Mars is reckoned malefic, so the rule applies directly: on younger siblings a difficult graha is an advantage rather than a cost.
• And a disagreement. Some traditions count the 3rd a dusthana and others do not. It changes the reading of Mars here materially, so it is left standing as a disagreement rather than resolved in one direction.

Mars’s own preferred bhavas are the 3rd, 6th, 10th, 11th, and the 3rd is among them — Mars is a malefic and therefore gains in the Upachaya houses, giving construction instead of destruction. So the classification of the 3rd and the disposition of Mars point the same way, which is not true of most of the 108 combinations.
