graha in bhava
Mars in the 3rd House
सहज भाव · Mangal · Gemini under Kaal Purush · in an enemy's sign
Mars, a malefic graha signifying younger siblings, land and property, weapons, surgery, engineering, the armed forces, placed in the bhava of courage, siblings, short travels, communication, hands and arms, neighbours, hobbies — that pairing is the whole of what Mars in the 3rd house means before a chart is opened. It is a closer fit than most: the 3rd house counts Mars among its own natural significators, the karaka it is read through for courage. A significator sitting in the bhava it signifies is read more literally than any other placement, because the graha and the house are asking the same question.
Under Kaal Purush the 3rd Is Gemini
In the natural chart the 3rd house is Gemini, so Mars here is in an enemy's sign. The bhava answers to Mercury, and the two do not read each other the same way: Mars counts Mercury an enemy, while Mercury counts Mars neutral — so whichever of the two is the stronger in a given chart changes what the 3rd delivers on younger siblings, not merely how much of it arrives. Gemini is spanned by the third and fourth padas of Mrigashira, Ardra and the first, second and third padas of Punarvasu, lorded in that order by Mars, Rahu and Jupiter. Mars lords Mrigashira among the three, so Mars in the 3rd is its own nakshatra dispositor when it falls in that nakshatra’s third and fourth padas — the one arrangement in which nothing at all mediates between Mars and this bhava’s younger siblings.
What the 3rd House’s Classification Does to Mars
The 3rd is classified upachaya (malefics gain here); apoklima (cadent); dusthana in some traditions. Set against Mars, a malefic graha, that classification produces:
- Dusthana. The 3rd is a house of difficulty, so what suffers is energy, courage, siblings, property — while what gets used is Mars’s capacity to endure younger siblings rather than to enjoy it.
- Upachaya. The 3rd is one of the four growing houses, where the tradition holds that malefics gain. Mars is reckoned malefic, so the rule applies directly: on younger siblings a difficult graha is an advantage rather than a cost.
- And a disagreement. Some traditions count the 3rd a dusthana and others do not. It changes the reading of Mars here materially, so it is left standing as a disagreement rather than resolved in one direction.
Mars’s own preferred bhavas are the 3rd, 6th, 10th, 11th, and the 3rd is among them — Mars is a malefic and therefore gains in the Upachaya houses, giving construction instead of destruction. So the classification of the 3rd and the disposition of Mars point the same way, which is not true of most of the 108 combinations.
Directional strength. Mars gains digbala in the 10th, which is a 6/8, the shashtashtaka distance the tradition singles out from the 3rd — so in the 3rd the directional component of Mars’s strength has to be made up elsewhere in the shadbala reckoning.
Which Bhavas Mars Reaches From the 3rd
Besides the 7th that every graha casts, Mars adds the 4th and 8th, so from the 3rd it reaches three bhavas:
- The 6th, enemies, diseases, debts, service, daily routine, pets, competition, legal issues — the 4th from the 3rd. Mars is documented as doing well in the 6th, so this aspect strengthens a bhava it already suits.
- The 9th, fortune, dharma, higher education, father, long-distance travel, gurus, philosophy — the 7th from the 3rd.
- The 10th, career, reputation, authority, public status, profession, achievements, government — the 8th from the 3rd. Mars is documented as doing well in the 10th, so this aspect strengthens a bhava it already suits.
Where the 3rd Sits Relative to Mars’s Own Bhavas
- Aries, which Mars owns, is the 1st — a 3/11, the upachaya pairing from the 3rd.
- Scorpio, which Mars owns, is the 8th — a 6/8, the shashtashtaka distance the tradition singles out from the 3rd.
- Mars exalts in Capricorn, the 10th — a 6/8, the shashtashtaka distance the tradition singles out from the 3rd.
- Mars falls in Cancer, the 4th — a 2/12, the gain-and-loss pairing from the 3rd.
- Bhavat bhavam from the 3rd gives the 5th, intelligence, children, creativity, romance, speculation, past-life merit (Poorva Punya) — a Parashari extension, read as Mars’s secondary indicator for the same matters.
- Mercury, dispositor of the 3rd, also owns the 6th — so whatever Mars does in the 3rd is routed through a lord whose other business is health and diseases.
The body reading. The 3rd bhava is arms, shoulders, hands, collarbone, right ear and the upper respiratory tract, while Mars governs muscle, bone marrow, red blood cells, the gall bladder and the forehead; medical astrology reads the 3rd for Mars where those two overlap, and their not overlapping is as informative as their doing so. A framework for reading a chart, not a diagnosis.
When Mars Is Actually in Your 3rd House
Your ascendant decides which rashi is your 3rd house, and the ephemeris knows exactly when Mars is in it. Mars covers all twelve rashis inside 2026–2027, so the 3rd-house transit happens for every ascendant — what differs is when, and for how long. The longest unbroken stretch in the table below is 118 days, which belongs to a Gemini ascendant, for whom the 3rd house is Leo. Some of these stretches include a retrograde stint, which is why a few rows carry two spells in the same rashi rather than one.
| Ascendant | Your 3rd house is | Mars there in 2026–2027 |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | Gemini | 2 August 2026 – 18 September 2026 |
| Taurus | Cancer | 18 September 2026 – 12 November 2026; 10 March 2027 – 26 April 2027 |
| Gemini | Leo | 12 November 2026 – 10 March 2027; 26 April 2027 – 5 July 2027 |
| Cancer | Virgo | 5 July 2027 – 24 August 2027 |
| Leo | Libra | 24 August 2027 – 8 October 2027 |
| Virgo | Scorpio | 8 October 2027 – 18 November 2027 |
| Libra | Sagittarius | to 16 January 2026; 18 November 2027 – 27 December 2027 |
| Scorpio | Capricorn | 16 January 2026 – 23 February 2026; from 27 December 2027 |
| Sagittarius | Aquarius | 23 February 2026 – 2 April 2026 |
| Capricorn | Pisces | 2 April 2026 – 11 May 2026 |
| Aquarius | Aries | 11 May 2026 – 20 June 2026 |
| Pisces | Taurus | 20 June 2026 – 2 August 2026 |
Sign ingresses computed from the DE421 ephemeris, sidereal Lahiri, as days rather than instants: the ingresses of the slower bodies shift by hours between one ayanamsa and the next, so a printed minute would be false precision. “From” or “to” marks a spell already running when the tables open, or still running when they close.
The Classical Reading of Mars in the 3rd
Excellent — a malefic in an Upachaya house. Physical courage, competitive drive, technical or mechanical skill with the hands.
Reading the 3rd in an Actual Chart
Everything above is structural — true of Mars in the 3rd in any chart. Four things decide what it does in yours, in this order. The rashi Mars actually occupies: the 3rd house is Gemini for an Aries ascendant and for no other, because Kaal Purush is the Aries-lagna chart — the table above gives the other eleven. The lord of your 3rd house and its condition, because a bhava delivers through its lord and not through its occupant. The aspects onto Mars there. And the dasha — Mars’s mahadasha runs 7 years, and a placement is largely dormant until its own period does.

Is Mars in Your 3rd House?
The table needs one thing from you — your ascendant. A free kundli gives you that, the rashi Mars occupies, its dignity there, and the dasha you are running: the four things this page says decide the reading.
