graha in rashi
Mars in Leo (Mangal in Simha)
Malefic · Fire · Sthira · ruled by the Sun
Mars in Leo is in a friend's sign. Leo is ruled by the Sun, and Mars counts the Sun a friend.
The relationship runs both ways: Mars counts the Sun a friend, and the Sun counts Mars a friend. A mutual reading is the simpler case — the graha and its host agree about each other, so the placement does not change character depending on which of the two is stronger.
Leo is a sthira fire sign governing the heart and upper abdomen, and Mars is reckoned malefic, governing energy, courage, siblings, property. Whatever Mars signifies — younger siblings, land and property, weapons, surgery, engineering, the armed forces — is what this rashi’s fixity holds in place.
The Dignity, Stated Precisely
- In Leo: in a friend's sign.
- Mars’s own signs: Aries and Scorpio.
- Exalted in: Capricorn, deepest at 28°.
- Debilitated in: Cancer.
- Moolatrikona: Aries 0°–12°.
- Leo’s lord: Sun. Leo exalts no graha and debilitates no graha.
What Mars Aspects From Leo
Every graha casts a full aspect on the 7th house from itself, and Mars adds the 4th and the 8th — Mars alone aspects the 4th and 8th. Counting from Leo, that lands on:
- 4th from Leo → Scorpio (Vrishchika), ruled by Mars. Mars rules this sign, so it is aspecting its own house from Leo.
- 7th from Leo → Aquarius (Kumbha), ruled by Saturn.
- 8th from Leo → Pisces (Meena), ruled by Jupiter.
Note the one that matters: at least one sign Mars aspects from Leo is a sign Mars itself rules. A graha aspecting its own rashi protects it, and it is the strongest single argument for reading this placement generously.
How Far Leo Is From Mars’s Own Ground
A graha is read partly by how far it has been displaced from the rashi it owns, and that distance is simple counting. Counting inclusively from Aries and from Scorpio, Leo falls as follows:
- 5th from Aries — a trine, the easiest of the distances.
- 10th from Scorpio — a square, both of them kendra houses.
- 8th from Capricorn, the sign of its exaltation — a 6/8 — the shashtashtaka relation, the most awkward of the twelve.
- 2nd from Cancer, the sign of its fall — a 2/12, the gain-and-loss axis.
- Opposite Leo stands Aquarius, ruled by Saturn — the rashi Mars faces from here, and therefore the one it aspects whatever else it does or does not aspect.
The Company Mars Keeps in Leo
Dignity runs in both directions, and the rashi has its own roster. Leo runs from 120°00′ to 150°00′ of sidereal longitude — the arc the Sun crosses about Aug 17 – Sep 16 — faces east, is classed male, and as a fire sign is of the Kshatriya varna. Within those thirty degrees:
- Ruled by Sun.
- Exalts no graha. Leo is one of the rashis with no exaltation degree in it at all, so nothing gains maximum strength here.
- Debilitates no graha. No graha reaches its lowest point inside Leo.
- Moolatrikona of Sun, 0°–20°.
So Leo holds neither an exaltation nor a debilitation degree, which makes it one of the more neutral hosts in the zodiac. There is no fixed point inside it for Mars to be measured against, and the reading falls back on the Sun and on the pada. Leo’s own traits — confident, dramatic, generous, creative, proud — are the register in which energy, courage, siblings, property gets expressed when Mars sits here.
The Nine Padas Mars Crosses in Leo
A rashi is thirty degrees and a pada is three degrees twenty minutes, so every sign holds exactly nine padas — never a round number of nakshatras. Leo holds 3 nakshatras in whole or in part: Magha, Purva Phalguni and Uttara Phalguni (pada 1).
| Pada | Sidereal longitude | Nakshatra | Lord | Navamsa |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 120°00′–123°20′ | Magha pada 1 | Ketu | Aries |
| 2 | 123°20′–126°40′ | Magha pada 2 | Ketu | Taurus |
| 3 | 126°40′–130°00′ | Magha pada 3 | Ketu | Gemini |
| 4 | 130°00′–133°20′ | Magha pada 4 | Ketu | Cancer |
| 5 | 133°20′–136°40′ | Purva Phalguni pada 1 | Venus | Leo |
| 6 | 136°40′–140°00′ | Purva Phalguni pada 2 | Venus | Virgo |
| 7 | 140°00′–143°20′ | Purva Phalguni pada 3 | Venus | Libra |
| 8 | 143°20′–146°40′ | Purva Phalguni pada 4 | Venus | Scorpio |
| 9 | 146°40′–150°00′ | Uttara Phalguni pada 1 | Sun | Sagittarius |
Mars rules Mrigashira, Chitra, Dhanishta, and none of them falls in Leo. So across all thirty degrees there is no stretch where Mars has nakshatra-level ownership to fall back on; the whole sign is read through the Sun, and through what the Sun makes of a guest it counts a friend. The nakshatra lords it does cross here are Ketu, Venus, Sun.
When Mars Is Actually in Leo
This is the part of the page that is not in a textbook. Computed from the DE421 sidereal ephemeris, Mars occupies Leo for 2 stretches inside 2026 and 2027:
- 12 November 2026 to 10 March 2027 — 118 days, after which Mars moves on to Cancer.
- 26 April 2027 to 5 July 2027 — 70 days, after which Mars moves on to Virgo.
Dates rather than clock times, because that is what a placement question needs. The ingress instants are computed and are printed on the monthly readings, where they matter for choosing a day.
Mars also combusts: within 17° of the Sun — the widest orb of any graha. A combust Mars in Leo is read as weakened whatever the dignity above says, which is the standard case where the textbook verdict and the actual sky disagree.
Reading Mars in Leo
Mars signifies younger siblings, land and property, weapons, surgery, engineering, the armed forces. In Leo those significations are filtered through a sthira fire sign ruled by the Sun, and the dignity above says how much support they get in the process. In a friend’s sign they are supported without being amplified — a quietly workable placement.
This is not a prediction, and it cannot be one: the house Leo occupies from the ascendant, which of the nine padas above holds the graha, and the running dasha all change the answer. Mars is reckoned malefic, and it gains in the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th while it struggles in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th — so Mars in Leo is a different placement in each of them. Under Kaal Purush Leo is the 5th bhava, so Mars in the 5th house is the same pairing read from the bhava side, with the Leo transit dated for each of the twelve ascendants.
For what Mars does when strong and when afflicted, its 7-year mahadasha, and the full remedy set, see the Mars (Mangal) page. The short form: Mars’s day is Tuesday, its gemstone is Red Coral (Moonga), its mantra is Om Mangalaya Namah, and its deities are Hanuman, and Kartikeya.
