Mars in Virgo (Mangal in Kanya)

Malefic · Earth · Dvisvabhava · ruled by Mercury

Mars in Virgo is in an enemy's sign. Virgo is ruled by Mercury, and Mars counts Mercury an enemy.

The relationship is not mutual, and that is the most useful thing on this page. Mars regards Mercury as an enemy, but Mercury regards Mars as neutral. The classical friendship table is asymmetric, which readers almost always assume it is not. In practice it means Mars settles into Virgo more warily than the host intends, so the placement behaves differently depending on which of the two is the stronger graha in the chart.

Virgo is a dvisvabhava earth sign governing the abdomen and intestines, and Mars is reckoned malefic, governing energy, courage, siblings, property. Whatever Mars signifies younger siblings, land and property, weapons, surgery, engineering, the armed forces — is what this rashi’s dual nature splits in two.

The Dignity, Stated Precisely

  • In Virgo: in an enemy's sign.
  • Mars’s own signs: Aries and Scorpio.
  • Exalted in: Capricorn, deepest at 28°.
  • Debilitated in: Cancer.
  • Moolatrikona: Aries 0°–12°.
  • Virgo’s lord: Mercury. Virgo exalts Mercury at 15° and debilitates Venus at 27°.

What Mars Aspects From Virgo

Every graha casts a full aspect on the 7th house from itself, and Mars adds the 4th and the 8thMars alone aspects the 4th and 8th. Counting from Virgo, that lands on:

  • 4th from VirgoSagittarius (Dhanu), ruled by Jupiter.
  • 7th from VirgoPisces (Meena), ruled by Jupiter.
  • 8th from VirgoAries (Mesha), ruled by Mars. Mars rules this sign, so it is aspecting its own house from Virgo.

Note the one that matters: at least one sign Mars aspects from Virgo is a sign Mars itself rules. A graha aspecting its own rashi protects it, and it is the strongest single argument for reading this placement generously.

How Far Virgo Is From Mars’s Own Ground

A graha is read partly by how far it has been displaced from the rashi it owns, and that distance is simple counting. Counting inclusively from Aries and from Scorpio, Virgo falls as follows:

  • 6th from Ariesa 6/8 — the shashtashtaka relation, the most awkward of the twelve.
  • 11th from Scorpioa 3/11, the upachaya pairing.
  • 9th from Capricorn, the sign of its exaltationa trine, the easiest of the distances.
  • 3rd from Cancer, the sign of its fall — a 3/11, the upachaya pairing.
  • Opposite Virgo stands Pisces, ruled by Jupiter — the rashi Mars faces from here, and therefore the one it aspects whatever else it does or does not aspect.

The Company Mars Keeps in Virgo

Dignity runs in both directions, and the rashi has its own roster. Virgo runs from 150°00′ to 180°00′ of sidereal longitude — the arc the Sun crosses about Sep 17 – Oct 17 — faces south, is classed female, and as an earth sign is of the Vaishya varna. Within those thirty degrees:

  • Ruled by Mercury.
  • Exalts Mercury at 15° — not Mars, so the strongest single degree of Virgo is not Mars’s.
  • Debilitates Venus at 27°, a different graha from Mars.
  • Moolatrikona of Mercury, 16°–20°.

So Mars shares Virgo with both an exaltation degree and a debilitation degree belonging to other grahas. A graha sitting close to either point is read against it, which is a reason the exact degree matters more in Virgo than in a sign carrying neither. Virgo’s own traits — analytical, practical, diligent, modest, perfectionist — are the register in which energy, courage, siblings, property gets expressed when Mars sits here.

The Nine Padas Mars Crosses in Virgo

A rashi is thirty degrees and a pada is three degrees twenty minutes, so every sign holds exactly nine padas — never a round number of nakshatras. Virgo holds 3 nakshatras in whole or in part: Uttara Phalguni (padas 2, 3, 4), Hasta and Chitra (padas 1, 2).

PadaSidereal longitudeNakshatraLordNavamsa
1150°00′153°20′Uttara Phalguni pada 2SunCapricorn
2153°20′156°40′Uttara Phalguni pada 3SunAquarius
3156°40′160°00′Uttara Phalguni pada 4SunPisces
4160°00′163°20′Hasta pada 1MoonAries
5163°20′166°40′Hasta pada 2MoonTaurus
6166°40′170°00′Hasta pada 3MoonGemini
7170°00′173°20′Hasta pada 4MoonCancer
8173°20′176°40′Chitra pada 1MarsLeo
9176°40′180°00′Chitra pada 2MarsVirgo

Mars rules Mrigashira, Chitra, Dhanishta, and one of them falls inside Virgo: Chitra (padas 1, 2). Those degrees are the part of Virgo where Mars is on its own ground regardless of what the sign lord thinks of it — a nakshatra lordship is a second, finer layer of dignity, and it does not have to agree with the first. That matters here, because it gives Mars a foothold in a sign whose lord it counts an enemy.

When Mars Is Actually in Virgo

This is the part of the page that is not in a textbook. Computed from the DE421 sidereal ephemeris, Mars occupies Virgo for one stretch inside 2026 and 2027:

  • 5 July 2027 to 24 August 202750 days, after which Mars moves on to Libra.

Dates rather than clock times, because that is what a placement question needs. The ingress instants are computed and are printed on the monthly readings, where they matter for choosing a day.

Mars also combusts: within 17° of the Sun — the widest orb of any graha. A combust Mars in Virgo is read as weakened whatever the dignity above says, which is the standard case where the textbook verdict and the actual sky disagree.

Reading Mars in Virgo

Mars signifies younger siblings, land and property, weapons, surgery, engineering, the armed forces. In Virgo those significations are filtered through a dvisvabhava earth sign ruled by Mercury, and the dignity above says how much support they get in the process. In an enemy’s sign they meet resistance from the host, and the results tend to arrive late or in a form the native did not ask for.

This is not a prediction, and it cannot be one: the house Virgo occupies from the ascendant, which of the nine padas above holds the graha, and the running dasha all change the answer. Mars is reckoned malefic, and it gains in the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th while it struggles in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th — so Mars in Virgo is a different placement in each of them. Under Kaal Purush Virgo is the 6th bhava, so Mars in the 6th house is the same pairing read from the bhava side, with the Virgo transit dated for each of the twelve ascendants.

For what Mars does when strong and when afflicted, its 7-year mahadasha, and the full remedy set, see the Mars (Mangal) page. The short form: Mars’s day is Tuesday, its gemstone is Red Coral (Moonga), its mantra is Om Mangalaya Namah, and its deities are Hanuman, and Kartikeya.
