Mars in the 2nd House

Mars, a malefic graha signifying younger siblings, land and property, weapons, surgery, engineering, the armed forces, placed in the bhava of wealth, family, speech, food, accumulated assets, early childhood, immediate family — that pairing is the whole of what Mars in the 2nd house means before a chart is opened. The 2nd house does not look to Mars for its significations though — it looks to Jupiter for wealth, Mercury for speech — so Mars here colours this bhava’s matters without representing them, and the karaka’s own condition has to be read separately from this placement.

Under Kaal Purush the 2nd Is Taurus

In the natural chart the 2nd house is Taurus, so Mars here is in a neutral sign. The bhava answers to Venus, and the two agree about each other: each counts the other neutral, so nothing in Mars’s dealings with the lord of the 2nd pulls against itself — the terms on which this bhava delivers savings and wealth are set by Venus’s own placement alone. Taurus is spanned by the second, third and fourth padas of Krittika, Rohini and the first and second padas of Mrigashira, lorded in that order by the Sun, the Moon and Mars. Mars lords Mrigashira among the three, so Mars in the 2nd is its own nakshatra dispositor when it falls in that nakshatra’s first and second padas — the one arrangement in which nothing at all mediates between Mars and this bhava’s savings and wealth.

• Maraka. The 2nd is one of the two maraka houses, a classification used only in longevity calculation. It says nothing about Mars on its own and nothing at all about an individual chart.

Mars is documented as doing well in the 3rd, 6th, 10th, 11th and badly in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th, 12th, and the 2nd is in neither list. That absence is worth something: with no inherited verdict about Mars here, the reading of the 2nd falls entirely to the rashi, the dispositor and the dasha.

Directional strength. Mars gains digbala in the 10th, which is a trine, the most supportive of the distances from the 2nd — so in the 2nd the directional component of Mars’s strength has to be made up elsewhere in the shadbala reckoning.

• Mars falls in Cancer, the 4th — a 3/11, the upachaya pairing from the 2nd.
• Bhavat bhavam from the 2nd gives the 3rd, courage, siblings, short travels, communication, hands and arms, neighbours, hobbies — a Parashari extension, read as Mars’s secondary indicator for the same matters.
• Venus, dispositor of the 2nd, also owns the 7th — so whatever Mars does in the 2nd is routed through a lord whose other business is spouse / partner.

The body reading. The 2nd bhava is face, mouth, teeth, tongue, throat and the right eye, while Mars governs muscle, bone marrow, red blood cells, the gall bladder and the forehead; medical astrology reads the 2nd for Mars where those two overlap, and their not overlapping is as informative as their doing so. When Mars Is Actually in Your 2nd House

Your ascendant decides which rashi is your 2nd house, and the ephemeris knows exactly when Mars is in it. Mars covers all twelve rashis inside 2026–2027, so the 2nd-house transit happens for every ascendant — what differs is when, and for how long. The longest unbroken stretch in the table below is 118 days, which belongs to a Cancer ascendant, for whom the 2nd house is Leo. Some of these stretches include a retrograde stint, which is why a few rows carry two spells in the same rashi rather than one.
