Venus in the 2nd House

Venus, a benefic graha signifying marriage, the wife in a man's chart, vehicles, art, music, luxury, hotels, cosmetics, placed in the bhava of wealth, family, speech, food, accumulated assets, early childhood, immediate family — that pairing is the whole of what Venus in the 2nd house means before a chart is opened. The 2nd house does not look to Venus for its significations though — it looks to Jupiter for wealth, Mercury for speech — so Venus here colours this bhava’s matters without representing them, and the karaka’s own condition has to be read separately from this placement.

Under Kaal Purush the 2nd Is Taurus

In the natural chart the 2nd house is Taurus, so Venus here is in its own sign. Venus rules Taurus itself, so the 2nd bhava is its own natural ground and it answers to no other graha for this house’s matters. Taurus is spanned by the second, third and fourth padas of Krittika, Rohini and the first and second padas of Mrigashira, lorded in that order by the Sun, the Moon and Mars. None of the three is Venus, so Venus in the 2nd always reports to another graha at the nakshatra level, and the pada decides which of the three — a finer cut on savings and wealth than the rashi gives, and the reason two people with Venus in the same 2nd house read differently.

What the 2nd House’s Classification Does to Venus

The 2nd is classified maraka (with the 7th); panapara (succedent). Set against Venus, a benefic graha, that classification produces:

• Maraka. The 2nd is one of the two maraka houses, a classification used only in longevity calculation. It says nothing about Venus on its own and nothing at all about an individual chart.

Venus is documented as doing well in the 1st, 4th, 5th, 9th, 11th, 12th and badly in the 6th, 8th, 7th, and the 2nd is in neither list. That absence is worth something: with no inherited verdict about Venus here, the reading of the 2nd falls entirely to the rashi, the dispositor and the dasha.

Directional strength. Venus gains digbala in the 4th, which is a 3/11, the upachaya pairing from the 2nd — so in the 2nd the directional component of Venus’s strength has to be made up elsewhere in the shadbala reckoning.

Venus casts only the drishti every graha has, the 7th from itself, which from the 2nd means it reaches one bhava:

• The 8th, longevity, sudden events, inheritance, occult, transformation, in-laws, joint finances — the 7th from the 2nd. Venus is documented as struggling in the 8th, so this aspect lands as pressure on a bhava it is uneasy in.

Where the 2nd Sits Relative to Venus’s Own Bhavas

• The 2nd is Venus’s own bhava. Taurus falls here in the natural chart, which is the strongest structural claim a graha can have on a house.
• Libra, which Venus owns, is the 7th — a 6/8, the shashtashtaka distance the tradition singles out from the 2nd.
• Venus exalts in Pisces, the 12th — a 3/11, the upachaya pairing from the 2nd.
• Venus falls in Virgo, the 6th — a trine, the most supportive of the distances from the 2nd.
• Bhavat bhavam from the 2nd gives the 3rd, courage, siblings, short travels, communication, hands and arms, neighbours, hobbies — a Parashari extension, read as Venus’s secondary indicator for the same matters.
• Venus, dispositor of the 2nd, also owns the 7th — so whatever Venus does in the 2nd is routed through a lord whose other business is spouse / partner.

The body reading. The 2nd bhava is face, mouth, teeth, tongue, throat and the right eye, while Venus governs kidneys, the reproductive system, the throat, skin lustre and the eyes; medical astrology reads the 2nd for Venus where those two overlap, and their not overlapping is as informative as their doing so. A framework for reading a chart, not a diagnosis.

When Venus Is Actually in Your 2nd House

Your ascendant decides which rashi is your 2nd house, and the ephemeris knows exactly when Venus is in it. Venus covers all twelve rashis inside 2026–2027, so the 2nd-house transit happens for every ascendant — what differs is when, and for how long. The longest unbroken stretch in the table below is 65 days, which belongs to a Virgo ascendant, for whom the 2nd house is Libra. Some of these stretches include a retrograde stint, which is why a few rows carry two spells in the same rashi rather than one.

Sign ingresses computed from the DE421 ephemeris, sidereal Lahiri, as days rather than instants: the ingresses of the slower bodies shift by hours between one ayanamsa and the next, so a printed minute would be false precision. “From” or “to” marks a spell already running when the tables open, or still running when they close.
