Sun in the 6th House

The Sun, a mild malefic graha signifying father, government, authority, the soul (atma), medicine, administration, placed in the bhava of enemies, diseases, debts, service, daily routine, pets, competition, legal issues — that pairing is the whole of what the Sun in the 6th house means before a chart is opened. The 6th house does not look to the Sun for its significations though — it looks to Mars and Saturn for conflict and disease — so the Sun here colours this bhava’s matters without representing them, and the karaka’s own condition has to be read separately from this placement.

Under Kaal Purush the 6th Is Virgo

In the natural chart the 6th house is Virgo, so the Sun here is in a neutral sign. The bhava answers to Mercury, and the two do not read each other the same way: the Sun counts Mercury neutral, while Mercury counts the Sun a friend — so whichever of the two is the stronger in a given chart changes what the 6th delivers on health and diseases, not merely how much of it arrives. Virgo is spanned by the second, third and fourth padas of Uttara Phalguni, Hasta and the first and second padas of Chitra, lorded in that order by the Sun, the Moon and Mars. The Sun lords Uttara Phalguni among the three, so the Sun in the 6th is its own nakshatra dispositor when it falls in that nakshatra’s second, third and fourth padas — the one arrangement in which nothing at all mediates between the Sun and this bhava’s health and diseases.

The 6th is classified dusthana (malefic house); upachaya (malefics gain here). Set against the Sun, a mild malefic graha, that classification produces:

• Dusthana. The 6th is a house of difficulty, so what suffers is soul, ego, vitality, leadership, father — while what gets used is the Sun’s capacity to endure health and diseases rather than to enjoy it.
• Upachaya. The 6th is one of the four growing houses, where the tradition holds that malefics gain. The Sun is reckoned mild malefic, so the rule applies directly: on health and diseases a difficult graha is an advantage rather than a cost.

The Sun is documented as doing well in the 1st, 5th, 9th, 10th, 11th and badly in the 4th, 7th, 12th, and the 6th is in neither list. That absence is worth something: with no inherited verdict about the Sun here, the reading of the 6th falls entirely to the rashi, the dispositor and the dasha.

Directional strength. The Sun gains digbala in the 10th, which is a trine, the most supportive of the distances from the 6th — so in the 6th the directional component of the Sun’s strength has to be made up elsewhere in the shadbala reckoning.

• Leo, which the Sun owns, is the 5th — a 2/12, the gain-and-loss pairing from the 6th.
• the Sun exalts in Aries, the 1st — a 6/8, the shashtashtaka distance the tradition singles out from the 6th.
• the Sun falls in Libra, the 7th — a 2/12, the gain-and-loss pairing from the 6th.
• Bhavat bhavam from the 6th gives the 11th, gains, income, elder siblings, fulfilment of desires, friends, networks, aspirations — a Parashari extension, read as the Sun’s secondary indicator for the same matters.
• Mercury, dispositor of the 6th, also owns the 3rd — so whatever the Sun does in the 6th is routed through a lord whose other business is younger siblings.

The body reading. The 6th bhava is lower abdomen, small intestine, kidneys and the waist, while the Sun governs heart, eyes, bones, head, and general vitality (ojas); medical astrology reads the 6th for the Sun where those two overlap, and their not overlapping is as informative as their doing so. A framework for reading a chart, not a diagnosis.

When the Sun Is Actually in Your 6th House

The Sun covers all twelve rashis inside 2026–2027, so the 6th-house transit happens for every ascendant — what differs is when, and for how long.
