Saturn in the 6th House

Saturn, a malefic graha signifying longevity, karma, labour, servants, old age, iron, coal, and delay itself, placed in the bhava of enemies, diseases, debts, service, daily routine, pets, competition, legal issues — that pairing is the whole of what Saturn in the 6th house means before a chart is opened. It is a closer fit than most: the 6th house counts Saturn among its own natural significators, the karaka it is read through for conflict and disease. A significator sitting in the bhava it signifies is read more literally than any other placement, because the graha and the house are asking the same question.

Under Kaal Purush the 6th Is Virgo

In the natural chart the 6th house is Virgo, so Saturn here is in a friend's sign. The bhava answers to Mercury, and the two do not read each other the same way: Saturn counts Mercury a friend, while Mercury counts Saturn neutral — so whichever of the two is the stronger in a given chart changes what the 6th delivers on health and diseases, not merely how much of it arrives. Virgo is spanned by the second, third and fourth padas of Uttara Phalguni, Hasta and the first and second padas of Chitra, lorded in that order by the Sun, the Moon and Mars. None of the three is Saturn, so Saturn in the 6th always reports to another graha at the nakshatra level, and the pada decides which of the three — a finer cut on health and diseases than the rashi gives, and the reason two people with Saturn in the same 6th house read differently.

What the 6th House’s Classification Does to Saturn

The 6th is classified dusthana (malefic house); upachaya (malefics gain here). Set against Saturn, a malefic graha, that classification produces:

• Dusthana. The 6th is a house of difficulty, so what suffers is karma, discipline, longevity, hard work — while what gets used is Saturn’s capacity to endure health and diseases rather than to enjoy it.
• Upachaya. The 6th is one of the four growing houses, where the tradition holds that malefics gain. Saturn is reckoned malefic, so the rule applies directly: on health and diseases a difficult graha is an advantage rather than a cost.

Saturn’s own preferred bhavas are the 3rd, 6th, 7th, 10th, 11th, and the 6th is among them — Saturn is a malefic and gains in the Upachaya houses, and the 7th is its digbala house. So the classification of the 6th and the disposition of Saturn point the same way, which is not true of most of the 108 combinations.

Directional strength. Saturn gains digbala in the 7th, which is a 2/12, the gain-and-loss pairing from the 6th — so in the 6th the directional component of Saturn’s strength has to be made up elsewhere in the shadbala reckoning.

Which Bhavas Saturn Reaches From the 6th

Besides the 7th that every graha casts, Saturn adds the 3rd and 10th, so from the 6th it reaches three bhavas:

• The 8th, longevity, sudden events, inheritance, occult, transformation, in-laws, joint finances — the 3rd from the 6th. Saturn is documented as struggling in the 8th, so this aspect lands as pressure on a bhava it is uneasy in.
• The 12th, expenses, foreign lands, isolation, spiritual liberation (moksha), losses, hidden enemies — the 7th from the 6th.
• The 3rd, courage, siblings, short travels, communication, hands and arms, neighbours, hobbies — the 10th from the 6th. Saturn is documented as doing well in the 3rd, so this aspect strengthens a bhava it already suits.

Where the 6th Sits Relative to Saturn’s Own Bhavas

• Capricorn, which Saturn owns, is the 10th — a trine, the most supportive of the distances from the 6th.
• Aquarius, which Saturn owns, is the 11th — a 6/8, the shashtashtaka distance the tradition singles out from the 6th.
• Saturn exalts in Libra, the 7th — a 2/12, the gain-and-loss pairing from the 6th.
• Saturn falls in Aries, the 1st — a 6/8, the shashtashtaka distance the tradition singles out from the 6th.
• Bhavat bhavam from the 6th gives the 11th, gains, income, elder siblings, fulfilment of desires, friends, networks, aspirations — a Parashari extension, read as Saturn’s secondary indicator for the same matters.
• Mercury, dispositor of the 6th, also owns the 3rd — so whatever Saturn does in the 6th is routed through a lord whose other business is younger siblings.

The body reading. The 6th bhava is lower abdomen, small intestine, kidneys and the waist, while Saturn governs bones, teeth, joints, the nervous system, knees and skin; medical astrology reads the 6th for Saturn where those two overlap, and their not overlapping is as informative as their doing so. When Saturn Is Actually in Your 6th House

Your ascendant decides which rashi is your 6th house, and here the ephemeris returns a sharper answer than any essay. Saturn occupies only 2 rashis across 2026–2027, so Saturn transits the 6th house for only 2 of the twelve ascendants in that whole period — Libra, Scorpio lagnas. For the other 10, general advice about Saturn in the 6th house describes nothing that is happening. The longest unbroken stretch is 518 days, for a Libra ascendant, whose 6th house is Pisces.
