Saturn in Taurus (Shani in Vrishabha)
Malefic · Earth · Sthira · ruled by Venus
Saturn in Taurus is in a friend's sign. Taurus is ruled by Venus, and Saturn counts Venus a friend.
The relationship runs both ways: Saturn counts Venus a friend, and Venus counts Saturn a friend. A mutual reading is the simpler case — the graha and its host agree about each other, so the placement does not change character depending on which of the two is stronger.
Taurus is a sthira earth sign governing the face, neck and throat, and Saturn is reckoned malefic, governing karma, discipline, longevity, hard work. Whatever Saturn signifies — longevity, karma, labour, servants, old age, iron, coal, and delay itself — is what this rashi’s fixity holds in place.
The Dignity, Stated Precisely
- In Taurus: in a friend's sign.
- Saturn’s own signs: Capricorn and Aquarius.
- Exalted in: Libra, deepest at 20°.
- Debilitated in: Aries.
- Moolatrikona: Aquarius 0°–20°.
- Taurus’s lord: Venus. Taurus exalts Moon at 3° and debilitates no graha.
What Saturn Aspects From Taurus
Every graha casts a full aspect on the 7th house from itself, and Saturn adds the 3rd and the 10th — Saturn alone aspects the 3rd and 10th. Counting from Taurus, that lands on:
- 3rd from Taurus → Cancer (Karka), ruled by Moon.
- 7th from Taurus → Scorpio (Vrishchika), ruled by Mars.
- 10th from Taurus → Aquarius (Kumbha), ruled by Saturn. Saturn rules this sign, so it is aspecting its own house from Taurus.
Note the one that matters: at least one sign Saturn aspects from Taurus is a sign Saturn itself rules. A graha aspecting its own rashi protects it, and it is the strongest single argument for reading this placement generously.
How Far Taurus Is From Saturn’s Own Ground
A graha is read partly by how far it has been displaced from the rashi it owns, and that distance is simple counting. Counting inclusively from Capricorn and from Aquarius, Taurus falls as follows:
- 5th from Capricorn — a trine, the easiest of the distances.
- 4th from Aquarius — a square, both of them kendra houses.
- 8th from Libra, the sign of its exaltation — a 6/8 — the shashtashtaka relation, the most awkward of the twelve.
- 2nd from Aries, the sign of its fall — a 2/12, the gain-and-loss axis.
- Opposite Taurus stands Scorpio, ruled by Mars — the rashi Saturn faces from here, and therefore the one it aspects whatever else it does or does not aspect.
The Company Saturn Keeps in Taurus
Dignity runs in both directions, and the rashi has its own roster. Taurus runs from 30°00′ to 60°00′ of sidereal longitude — the arc the Sun crosses about May 15 – Jun 14 — faces south, is classed female, and as an earth sign is of the Vaishya varna. Within those thirty degrees:
- Ruled by Venus.
- Exalts Moon at 3° — not Saturn, so the strongest single degree of Taurus is not Saturn’s.
- Debilitates no graha. No graha reaches its lowest point inside Taurus.
- Moolatrikona of Moon, 4°–30°.
So Taurus carries a fixed dignity point inside it, and the closer Saturn sits to that degree the more the reading is dominated by it rather than by the sign as a whole. Taurus’s own traits — reliable, patient, devoted, stubborn, sensual — are the register in which karma, discipline, longevity, hard work gets expressed when Saturn sits here.
The Nine Padas Saturn Crosses in Taurus
A rashi is thirty degrees and a pada is three degrees twenty minutes, so every sign holds exactly nine padas — never a round number of nakshatras. Taurus holds 3 nakshatras in whole or in part: Krittika (padas 2, 3, 4), Rohini and Mrigashira (padas 1, 2).
| Pada | Sidereal longitude | Nakshatra | Lord | Navamsa |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 30°00′–33°20′ | Krittika pada 2 | Sun | Capricorn |
| 2 | 33°20′–36°40′ | Krittika pada 3 | Sun | Aquarius |
| 3 | 36°40′–40°00′ | Krittika pada 4 | Sun | Pisces |
| 4 | 40°00′–43°20′ | Rohini pada 1 | Moon | Aries |
| 5 | 43°20′–46°40′ | Rohini pada 2 | Moon | Taurus |
| 6 | 46°40′–50°00′ | Rohini pada 3 | Moon | Gemini |
| 7 | 50°00′–53°20′ | Rohini pada 4 | Moon | Cancer |
| 8 | 53°20′–56°40′ | Mrigashira pada 1 | Mars | Leo |
| 9 | 56°40′–60°00′ | Mrigashira pada 2 | Mars | Virgo |
Saturn rules Pushya, Anuradha, Uttara Bhadrapada, and none of them falls in Taurus. So across all thirty degrees there is no stretch where Saturn has nakshatra-level ownership to fall back on; the whole sign is read through Venus, and through what Venus makes of a guest it counts a friend. The nakshatra lords it does cross here are Sun, Moon, Mars.
When Saturn Is Actually in Taurus
Here is the honest answer, and it is a computed one: Saturn does not enter Taurus at any point in 2026 or 2027. The DE421 ephemeris this site computes from covers those two years, and across the whole of it Saturn never crosses into this rashi.
The negative is worth turning into a measurement, because it is one. On 1 January 2026, the first day the tables cover, Saturn stands in Pisces; by 1 January 2028 it has reached Pisces, having gone round and returned to the same rashi. From Pisces, Taurus is a further two signs ahead — that is how much of the zodiac still separates Saturn from this rashi when the tables run out.
That is a property of orbital period rather than an accident. Saturn takes about twenty-nine and a half years to travel the zodiac, so it spends roughly two and a half years in each sign and a two-year window can only ever reach a few of them. This page is therefore about the placement as a natal condition — what it means in a chart born with it — and not about a transit you can wait for.
Where Saturn does go in this window is worth knowing, and it is on the Saturn page; the monthly readings under our rashifal archive date every ingress it does make.
Saturn also combusts: within 15° of the Sun. A combust Saturn in Taurus is read as weakened whatever the dignity above says, which is the standard case where the textbook verdict and the actual sky disagree.
Reading Saturn in Taurus
Saturn signifies longevity, karma, labour, servants, old age, iron, coal, and delay itself. In Taurus those significations are filtered through a sthira earth sign ruled by Venus, and the dignity above says how much support they get in the process. In a friend’s sign they are supported without being amplified — a quietly workable placement.
This is not a prediction, and it cannot be one: the house Taurus occupies from the ascendant, which of the nine padas above holds the graha, and the running dasha all change the answer. Saturn is reckoned malefic, and it gains in the 3rd, 6th, 7th, 10th and 11th while it struggles in the 1st, 4th, 5th and 8th — so Saturn in Taurus is a different placement in each of them. Under Kaal Purush Taurus is the 2nd bhava, so Saturn in the 2nd house is the same pairing read from the bhava side, with the Taurus transit dated for each of the twelve ascendants.
For what Saturn does when strong and when afflicted, its 19-year mahadasha, and the full remedy set, see the Saturn (Shani) page. The short form: Saturn’s day is Saturday, its gemstone is Blue Sapphire (Neelam), its mantra is Om Shanaishcharaya Namah, and its deities are Shani, and Hanuman, who is held to control him.
