The 3rd Lord for Virgo Ascendant: Mars
3rd house = Scorpio · lord Mars · also lord of the 8th
With Virgo rising, the 3rd house is Scorpio, the 3rd sign counted from Virgo, and Scorpio is ruled by Mars. So for Virgo ascendant the 3rd lord is Mars, which also rules the 8th through Aries: one graha holds the 3rd and the 8th together for this ascendant. The 3rd is an upachaya, and the 8th a dusthana.
The lagna lord, Mercury, counts Mars neutral, while Mars counts Mercury an enemy: for Virgo ascendant the 1st and 3rd lords do not see each other the same way. The 3rd’s matters are younger siblings, courage and effort, communication style and short journeys; with Virgo rising they sit in Scorpio, a fixed water sign that is the 8th of the natural zodiac.
Scorpio as the 3rd House of Virgo Ascendant
Scorpio exalts no graha in signs.js, so no graha is exalted in the 3rd for Virgo ascendant; it debilitates the Moon at 3°, so the Moon is debilitated in the 3rd. The house holds Vishakha (pada 4), Anuradha (all four padas) and Jyeshtha (all four padas), whose lords are Jupiter, Saturn and Mercury; Mars rules none of them. Opposite, across the chart, the 9th holds Taurus, ruled by Venus.
