The 3rd Lord for Aquarius Ascendant: Mars
3rd house = Aries · lord Mars · also lord of the 10th
With Aquarius rising, the 3rd house is Aries, the 3rd sign counted from Aquarius, and Aries is ruled by Mars. So for Aquarius ascendant the 3rd lord is Mars, which also rules the 10th through Scorpio: one graha holds the 3rd and the 10th together for this ascendant. The 3rd is an upachaya, and the 10th a kendra and an upachaya.
The lagna lord, Saturn, counts Mars an enemy, while Mars counts Saturn neutral: for Aquarius ascendant the 1st and 3rd lords do not see each other the same way. The 3rd’s matters are younger siblings, courage and effort, communication style and short journeys; with Aquarius rising they sit in Aries, a movable fire sign that is the 1st of the natural zodiac.
Aries as the 3rd House of Aquarius Ascendant
Aries exalts the Sun, deepest at 10°, so for Aquarius ascendant the Sun is exalted in the 3rd; it debilitates Saturn at 20°, so Saturn is debilitated in the 3rd. The house holds Ashwini (all four padas), Bharani (all four padas) and Krittika (pada 1), whose lords are Ketu, Venus and the Sun; Mars rules none of them. Opposite, across the chart, the 9th holds Libra, ruled by Venus.
