About Ganesh Puja

Ganesh Puja is the worship of Lord Ganesha, the beloved elephant-headed deity who is the remover of obstacles and the lord of beginnings. In Hindu tradition, every auspicious activity begins with Ganesh Puja to ensure smooth progress and success. Lord Ganesha is also the patron of arts, sciences, and wisdom, making this puja essential for students, professionals, and business owners seeking divine guidance and obstacle-free paths.

Benefits of Ganesh Puja

Removes obstacles from all endeavors

Brings wisdom and intelligence

Ensures success in new beginnings

Prosperity in business ventures

Academic excellence for students

Puja Process

Ganesh Avahana, Shodashopachara Puja, Ganesh Atharvashirsha recitation, Modak offering, Aarti, and Visarjan

Best Time to Perform

Ganesh Chaturthi, Wednesdays, before any new venture

Chaturthithe 4th tithi of both pakshas

Ganesh Chaturthi is the Shukla Chaturthi of Bhadrapada, but a Chaturthi comes round twice a lunar month, and the Krishna one — Sankashti Chaturthi — is the monthly Ganesh observance kept between the annual festivals.

Why that vara

Wednesday is Budha's vara, and Ganesha is Budha's deity, invoked for the removal of obstacles to learning specifically. That is the same reason Ganesh puja opens every other ritual: the obstacle is removed before the work starts, not during it.

Not begun in Rahu Kaal, and a full muhurat for your date and city has to satisfy the nakshatra, yoga and karana too.

The Graha Behind Ganesh Puja

Graha

Mercury (Budh, बुध)

Vara

Wednesday

Deity

Vishnu, and Ganesha for the removal of obstacles to learning

Mantra

Om Budhaya Namah

Graha Shanti japa

9,000 repetitions

Governs

Intellect, communication, commerce

The japa count is fixed rather than arbitrary: 9,000 for Mercury, between 7,000 for the Sun and 23,000 for Saturn. Larger figures are a purascharana — japa, then homa at a tenth of it, then tarpana at a tenth of that.

Items Required (Samagri)

Modak and laddoo

Twenty-one modak is the traditional count. The offering is steamed rather than fried when it is made for Chaturthi, and it is the one prasad the puja is named for in Maharashtra.

Durva grass

Offered in bunches of twenty-one blades, three or five to a bunch. Durva is specific to Ganesha in the way bilva is to Shiva, and no substitute is accepted for it.

Red flowers

Hibiscus above all. Ganesha's cloth, flowers and sindoor are red, and the murti is smeared with it rather than draped.

Coconut

Broken at the start. The order is fixed — Ganesha first, then the deity of the main rite — which is why a coconut is broken before a griha pravesh, a wedding and a navgraha shanti alike.

Ganesh idol or murti

Installed for the duration and then immersed. A clay murti is immersed because it was made to be, and the visarjan is a structural part of the puja rather than a disposal.

Samagri is supplied with the booking. Substitutions are normal and regional; the item a rite is defined by is the one that is never substituted.

When is the best time to perform Ganesh Puja?

The ideal time for Ganesh Puja is Ganesh Chaturthi, Wednesdays, before any new venture. Chaturthi is the 4th tithi of both pakshas.
