Casting a Birth Chart for Mysore

A kundli is not cast for a country, it is cast for a point on the Earth. These are the numbers an astrologer needs before anything else, for a birth in Mysore.

The birth time correction almost nobody applies

IST is one offset for a country spanning some 29 degrees of longitude, pinned to the 82.5°E meridian in Uttar Pradesh. Mysore sits at 76.64°E, which puts true local time 23 minutes behind the clock on the wall. A birth registered at 12:00 IST in Mysore happened at roughly 11:37 local mean time. Since the Ascendant advances about one degree every four minutes, that is close to 5.9 degrees of Ascendant — which changes the rising sign outright for a birth near a sign boundary, and shifts every house cusp in the chart when it does not.

Desantara: the classical correction

Long before IST existed, the siddhantic texts faced the same problem and named the fix desantara — the longitude correction. The Surya Siddhanta computes for the meridian through Ujjain at 75.7885°E, and every other place had to adjust the tabulated planetary positions before using them. Mysore lies 0.85° east of Ujjain, a desantara of about 3 min. Modern software applies this silently from the coordinates, which is why the term has quietly dropped out of everyday practice even though the correction is still being made on every chart.

Palabha: the latitude a classical text would actually record

Desantara settles the longitude. Its counterpart for latitude is the palabha — and a siddhantic text does not record latitude in degrees at all. It records the shadow: the length cast at local noon on an equinox by a shanku, a gnomon twelve angulas tall. For Mysore that is 2.62 angulas, and every latitude-dependent figure in the chart follows from it.

Mysore lies inside the tropics, so the noon Sun passes directly overhead twice a year — around 22 April and 20 August. On those two days a gnomon here casts no shadow at noon at all, and between them the noon shadow falls to the south of the stick rather than the north, because the Sun is then north of the zenith. At the solstices the same shadow measures about 2.36 angulas in June and 8.63 in December.

Which lagna rises longest in Mysore

Latitude also fixes how long each rashi takes to clear the eastern horizon — the classical lagna-mana. The twelve are never equal, and the further a place sits from the equator the less equal they get. At 12.30°N, Scorpio takes about 132 minutes to rise in Mysore while Pisces needs only 101 — a spread of 31 minutes. They still sum to 24 hours, as they must.

Aries109 min
Taurus123 min
Gemini132 min
Cancer129 min
Leo123 min
Virgo121 min
Libra126 min
Scorpio132 min
Sagittarius128 min
Capricorn114 min
Aquarius103 min
Pisces101 min

In whole-sign house division, which most Indian practice uses, this moves no house boundary — the rashi is the bhava. It does move the cusps of a bhava-chalit or Sripati chart, computed from these very figures, and it sets what a doubtful birth time costs: with Pisces on the horizon in Mysore the Ascendant advances about 0.30° a minute, so five minutes of uncertainty is 1.5° of lagna — a different navamsa, and a different rising sign near a cusp. Figures are sidereal, at the Lahiri ayanamsa of 24.22°.

Why Mysore's panchang is its own

The panchang runs sunrise to sunrise, so it is local by construction. At 12.30°N, daylight in Mysore stretches from about 11h 17m at the winter solstice to 12h 43m at the summer solstice — a swing of roughly 87 minutes over the year. That is a narrow range: this far south the day length barely moves, so sunrise here is unusually stable and the muhurta windows shift little between seasons. A tithi that ends just after sunrise in one city and just before it in another gets attached to different dates in the two almanacs. That, rather than any disagreement about the astronomy, is why two panchangs can name different days for the same observance.

The Calendar Karnataka Keeps: Amanta

The tithi, nakshatra and yoga at any given moment are the same everywhere on Earth — they are astronomy. What differs by region is the month those fall in, and the era the year is counted in. In Karnataka, the lunar month is counted as ending at the new moon, so a month opens with the bright fortnight and closes with the dark one. This is the reckoning of the Deccan and western almanacs, and of the Shaka era used by the Indian national calendar.

The year here is reckoned in the Shalivahana Shaka era, 78 years behind the Common Era, which is also the era of the Indian national calendar. Gudi Padwa and Ugadi — the new year here — fall on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada, the day after the new moon, while the North Indian Vikram year begins from the same tithi under a different era number. Amanta reckoning is also what the Shaka-based national calendar follows, so government almanacs agree with the local one in this region and not with a Purnimanta one.

The year turns in Karnataka at Yugadi, on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada. Sharing a reckoning does not mean sharing a new year: two states can count their months the same way and still disagree about which year it is, so a Samvat number quoted without the region it came from is not enough to date a document or a horoscope by.

Practical upshot for Mysore: when you are given a date for Dasara Puja and Navaratri celebrations or any other ceremony, the fortnight and tithi are unambiguous but the month name depends on which reckoning the almanac follows. Confirm the paksha and the tithi, and have the muhurta computed for Mysore's own sunrise rather than a generic one.

Frequently Asked Questions - Astrologer in Mysore

How can I talk to an astrologer in Mysore online?

Create a free account, filter the 200 listed astrologers by language or specialisation — Kannada speakers included — and start a chat or call. No appointment is needed.

What is the cost of astrology consultation in Mysore?

From Rs 15 per minute to about Rs 60 for the most experienced astrologers, who set their own rates. You are billed for the time you use and can end the session at any point.

Which type of astrology is popular in Mysore?

Mysore royal Jyotish tradition with Dvaita philosophy base. In calendar terms Karnataka follows Amanta reckoning, where the lunar month is counted as ending at the new moon, so a month opens with the bright fortnight and closes with the dark one. This is the reckoning of the Deccan and western almanacs, and of the Shaka era used by the Indian national calendar. Our astrologers who consult for Mysore work in that convention.

Can I book a pandit for puja in Mysore through LivePanditJi?

Yes. You can consult pandits who perform Dasara Puja and Navaratri celebrations and the other ceremonies kept in Mysore, and have the muhurta selected for your city rather than for a generic location — which matters, because the sunrise a panchang is computed from is local.

Does my birth time in Mysore need a correction before casting a chart?

Your birth certificate records IST, which is fixed to the 82.5°E meridian. Mysore is at 76.64°E, so local mean time here is 23 min behind the clock. The Ascendant moves about one degree every four minutes, so that is roughly 5.9 degrees of Ascendant — enough to change your rising sign if you were born within half an hour of a sign boundary, and enough to move every house cusp if you were not. Any astrologer casting a chart for a Mysore birth should be working from the coordinates, not from the clock time alone.

Why does the panchang for Mysore differ from another city's on the same date?

A panchang is reckoned from local sunrise, and sunrise depends on latitude and longitude. At 12.30°N, daylight in Mysore runs from about 11h 17m at the winter solstice to 12h 43m at the summer solstice, a swing of roughly 87 minutes across the year. When a tithi ends shortly after sunrise in one city and shortly before it in another, the two almanacs assign that tithi to different days — which is the usual reason two panchangs appear to disagree about a fast or a festival.

Which lagna takes longest to rise in Mysore?

Scorpio, at about 132 minutes, while Pisces clears the horizon in roughly 101. Rising times are set by latitude — 12.30°N here — and the twelve are never equal, though they always total 24 hours. The practical consequence is that with Pisces rising, the Ascendant moves about 0.30 degrees per minute, so an uncertain birth time costs more degrees of lagna in some signs than in others. These figures are for sidereal rashis at the Lahiri ayanamsa of 24.22 degrees.

What is the palabha of Mysore?

2.62 angulas. Palabha, or akshabha, is the length of the shadow cast at noon on an equinox by a gnomon twelve angulas tall, and it is how a siddhantic text records a place instead of giving a latitude in degrees — every latitude-dependent quantity in the chart is derived from it. Because Mysore is inside the tropics, the noon Sun crosses the zenith twice a year, around 22 April and 20 August, and on those days the shadow disappears entirely.

Is an online consultation as accurate as meeting an astrologer in Mysore?

The reading is computed from your date, time and place of birth, not from physical presence, so nothing in the chart changes. Online you can also filter across 26 languages and 200 astrologers rather than whoever practises nearby. For a puja needing a pandit physically present, book the ceremony instead.
