Holika Dahan 2028: Friday, 10 March 2028

Holika Dahan in 2028 falls on Friday, 10 March 2028. It is kept on the Purnima of amanta Phalguna.

Why Holika Dahan Is on 10 March in 2028

The Purnima begins at 10:21 on 10 March 2028 and ends at 06:36 on 11 March 2028. The 2028 instants are the same everywhere; only the clock they are read on changes. The rule recorded for Holika Dahan tests the tithi at pradosh, with Bhadra excluded (“Purnima at pradosh, Bhadra excluded”).

On 10 March 2028 the Sun rises at 06:36 and sets at 18:26 at New Delhi. The table takes the first evening on which the Purnima is current at sunset and Bhadra does not cover it; in 2028 that is 10 March 2028, with pradosh from 18:26.

In 2028 the Purnima lasts 20 hours 15 minutes, against 23 hours 11 minutes in 2026 and 21 hours 51 minutes in 2027: a tithi is twelve degrees of the Moon’s gain on the Sun, and the Moon never gains at a steady rate. The day itself runs 11 hours 50 minutes from sunrise to sunset at New Delhi. The Purnima ends at the full moon itself, 06:36 on 11 March 2028, with the Moon in Leo and Uttara Phalguni.

When the Purnima begins, the Moon is in Purva Phalguni, ruled by Venus.

Holika Dahan in 2026, 2027 and 2028

Holika Dahan 2028 comes 11 days earlier in the calendar year than Holika Dahan 2027. Between Holika Dahan 2027 and Holika Dahan 2028 the lunation table has 12 new moons, and twelve lunations fall short of a solar year, so the date moves earlier.

In the 2028 table Holika Dahan comes 16 days after Maha Shivratri and 1 day before Holi.

Within six days of Holika Dahan in 2028: Holi (11 March).
