Brahma Muhurta Time by City and Month, and How to Find It
Published 2026-10-29 | Live Pandit Ji
Brahma muhurta has no fixed clock time. In every panchang table on this site it is the 96 minutes that end at sunrise: two muhurtas of 48 minutes, or four ghatis of 24. Because it is counted backwards from the local sunrise, “brahma muhurta kis time hota hai” has a different answer in each city and in each week. At New Delhi in 2027 it opens as early as 03:46 and as late as 05:39.
Which Window This Site Prints, and the Other Readings
The site’s daily table for New Delhi carries a Brahma muhurta on all 730 of its rows, 2026 and 2027, and each one is exactly sunrise minus 96 minutes to sunrise; a check at build time re-derives every row from its own sunrise. The city panchang pages and the panchang tool use the same window, so the definition does not change from one page to the next.
Printed sources do not all agree with that span. James G. Lochtefeld’s Illustrated Encyclopedia of Hinduism (2002, p. 122) gives a single 48-minute muhurta that starts 96 minutes before sunrise and ends 48 minutes before it, the second-to-last muhurta of the night. Gaya Charan Tripathi, writing on the daily puja of the Jagannatha temple, puts its start three muhurtas before dawn, which makes it the first of the last three. The three line up like this, measured back from sunrise:
| Reading | Opens | Closes | Length |
|---|---|---|---|
| This site’s panchang | 96 min before sunrise | at sunrise | 96 min |
| Lochtefeld (2002) | 96 min before | 48 min before | 48 min |
| Tripathi, Jagannatha temple | 144 min before | 96 min before | 48 min |
The first two open at the same moment; they differ only in whether the last muhurta before sunrise is included. Every clock time on this page is the first row’s. For the other two, take the opening and closing offsets from the table and subtract them from the same sunrise.
“According to shastra” usually means a muhurta text, and the count of fifteen night muhurtas behind “second-to-last” is in one: the Muhurta Chintamani, Vivaha Prakarana 53 (मुहूर्ता निशि कीर्तिताः). The verse names them by presiding deity: Shiva, then the eight nakshatra lords counted from Aja Ekapada (Aja Ekapada, Ahirbudhnya, Pushan, Ashwini Kumaras, Yama, Agni, Brahma and Soma), then Aditi, Jiva, Vishnu, Arka, Tvashtr and Marut. Read in that order, the fourteenth is Tvashtr, and the name Brahma falls eighth, as the lord of Rohini. So the verse supplies the count of fifteen; it does not itself attach the name Brahma muhurta to the second-to-last slot. The day and night together hold thirty muhurtas, listed in order on the thirty muhurtas of day and night.

The earliest sunrise of 2027 at New Delhi, 05:22, holds on every morning from 7 June to 15 June, so the window opens at 03:46 on each of them. The latest, 07:15, holds from 8 January to 15 January, with the window opening at 05:39. Between the two the opening moves by 1 h 53 min. Neither extreme sits on a solstice: the earliest comes a week or more before the June solstice and the latest more than a fortnight after the December one. The cause is the equation of time, the difference between apparent and mean solar time, which keeps pushing sunrise later through early January even after the days have started to lengthen, and brings it earliest before the longest day.
Thirteen Cities on Two Mornings
The two mornings below are 8 January and 7 June 2027, the first days of New Delhi’s latest and earliest sunrise of the year. Cities are listed north to south.
| City | 8 January 2027 | 7 June 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| Jammu | 05:57 to 07:33 | 03:46 to 05:22 |
| Delhi | 05:39 to 07:15 | 03:46 to 05:22 |
| Lucknow | 05:20 to 06:56 | 03:35 to 05:11 |
| Guwahati | 04:35 to 06:11 | 02:54 to 04:30 |
| Patna | 05:01 to 06:37 | 03:21 to 04:57 |
| Ahmedabad | 05:46 to 07:22 | 04:17 to 05:53 |
| Kolkata | 04:42 to 06:18 | 03:15 to 04:51 |
| Mumbai | 05:37 to 07:13 | 04:24 to 06:00 |
| Pune | 05:32 to 07:08 | 04:21 to 05:57 |
| Hyderabad | 05:12 to 06:48 | 04:04 to 05:40 |
| Chennai | 04:57 to 06:33 | 04:05 to 05:41 |
| Bangalore | 05:07 to 06:43 | 04:16 to 05:52 |
| Kochi | 05:08 to 06:44 | 04:27 to 06:03 |
On 7 June the window opens first in Guwahati, at 02:54, and last in Kochi, at 04:27, 1 h 33 min apart. On 8 January Guwahati is again first and Jammu last, 1 h 22 min apart. Most of that is longitude: all of India keeps one clock, and Guwahati, 19.2° east of Ahmedabad, gets its sunrise 83 minutes earlier in June and 71 in January. Latitude reverses part of it with the season. Jammu opens its window 41 minutes before Kochi in June, when northern days are long, and 49 minutes after it in January, when they are short. A Brahma muhurta copied from a New Delhi almanac is therefore early or late almost everywhere else. The compass direction of that sunrise moves through the year as well; sunrise direction through the year works it out for the same cities.
Earliest and Latest in 2027, City by City
| City | Earliest opening | Latest opening | Swing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jammu | 03:46 (4 June to 20 June) | 05:57 (3 January to 15 January) | 2 h 11 min |
| Delhi | 03:46 (7 June to 15 June) | 05:39 (8 January to 15 January) | 1 h 53 min |
| Lucknow | 03:35 (6 June to 14 June) | 05:20 (6 January to 19 January) | 1 h 45 min |
| Guwahati | 02:54 (1 June to 18 June) | 04:36 (11 January to 15 January) | 1 h 42 min |
| Patna | 03:21 (6 June to 13 June) | 05:01 (8 January to 19 January) | 1 h 40 min |
| Ahmedabad | 04:17 (1 June to 15 June) | 05:46 (7 January to 23 January) | 1 h 29 min |
| Kolkata | 03:15 (30 May to 17 June) | 04:42 (7 January to 24 January) | 1 h 27 min |
| Mumbai | 04:24 (27 May to 16 June) | 05:38 (10 January to 27 January) | 1 h 14 min |
| Pune | 04:21 (27 May to 15 June) | 05:33 (10 January to 28 January) | 1 h 12 min |
| Hyderabad | 04:04 (1 June to 9 June) | 05:13 (13 January to 27 January) | 1 h 09 min |
| Chennai | 04:05 (24 May to 10 June) | 04:59 (15 January to 3 February) | 54 min |
| Bangalore | 04:16 (23 May to 11 June) | 05:10 (18 January to 31 January) | 54 min |
| Kochi | 04:26 (24 May to 4 June) | 05:11 (21 January to 4 February) | 45 min |
In every one of the thirteen cities the earliest opening falls between late May and 20 June, before the June solstice, and the latest begins in January, after the December solstice; in Chennai and Kochi it lasts into the first days of February. The farther north, the wider the year’s swing: Jammu’s window moves by 2 h 11 min, Kochi’s by only 45 min. A run of dates means the sunrise stays on the same minute for all of them.
How to Work It Out for Any Place
Find the local sunrise and subtract 96 minutes, which is 1 h 36 min; the window runs from that moment to sunrise. On Friday 30 October 2026, the morning after this page was published, the New Delhi table gives sunrise at 06:31. Take away 1 h 36 min and the window is 04:55 to 06:31, the same span the table prints (04:55-06:31). Mumbai’s sunrise that morning is 06:37, giving 05:01 to 06:37; Kolkata’s is 05:39, giving 04:03 to 05:39. If an almanac quotes the window in ghatis, it is the last four ghatis of the night; ghati and pala to hours covers that conversion.
For “aaj” or “kal”, the sunrise is the only input that has to be looked up. The city panchang pages give each day’s sunrise for 38 cities, and the per-date pages for Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Pune and Ahmedabad print the Brahma muhurta row itself. The panchang tool computes New Delhi only; for anywhere else, subtract from that place’s own sunrise.
If the Night Is Split Into Fifteen Equal Parts
The 48-minute muhurta assumes a twelve-hour night. Taking the Muhurta Chintamani’s fifteen night muhurtas as fifteen equal shares of the actual night, from the previous evening’s sunset to the morning’s sunrise, gives another answer: the fourteenth share starts two-fifteenths of the night before sunrise and ends one-fifteenth before it. No table on this site uses that reading. It is shown here as arithmetic, offsets only, for the longest and shortest nights of 2027.
| City | Longest night | 14th share, before sunrise | Shortest night | 14th share, before sunrise |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jammu | 14 h 01 min | 112 to 56 min (56 min long) | 9 h 41 min | 77 to 39 min (38 min long) |
| Delhi | 13 h 41 min | 109 to 55 min (54 min long) | 10 h 02 min | 80 to 40 min (40 min long) |
| Kolkata | 13 h 16 min | 106 to 53 min (53 min long) | 10 h 29 min | 84 to 42 min (42 min long) |
| Mumbai | 13 h 02 min | 104 to 52 min (52 min long) | 10 h 43 min | 86 to 43 min (43 min long) |
| Chennai | 12 h 40 min | 101 to 51 min (50 min long) | 11 h 06 min | 89 to 44 min (45 min long) |
| Thiruvananthapuram | 12 h 23 min | 99 to 50 min (49 min long) | 11 h 23 min | 91 to 46 min (45 min long) |
At Delhi the share opens 109 minutes before sunrise on the longest nights, around the December solstice, and 80 minutes before it on the shortest, around the June one, against a fixed 96. Jammu stretches that to 112 and 77. In Thiruvananthapuram, the southernmost city in the site’s list, nights stay close to twelve hours and the share moves only between 99 and 91, so there the proportional and fixed readings almost coincide. For the larger division of the same night and day into watches, see the eight prahars and their lengths.
What This Page Leaves Out
This page gives the window and how it is measured. It does not say what anyone should do in it, or rate it against any other hour. Its evening counterpart is pradosh kaal, three of the same 48-minute muhurtas counted forward from sunset, and the dusk window around sunset is godhuli bela. In Hindi: ब्रह्म मुहूर्त कितने बजे से कितने बजे तक.
