Datta Jayanti 2027: Monday 13 December, Margashirsha Purnima
Published 2026-10-27 | Live Pandit Ji
Datta Jayanti 2027 (दत्त जयंती), Dattatreya’s birth observance, falls on Monday 13 December 2027. It belongs to the full moon of Margashirsha, and this year that tithi gives no room for argument: it is current at the 13 December sunrise, current through the evening that follows, and gone before either neighbouring day can claim it. That holds in all 38 cities the site computes, not only at New Delhi. Below are the tithi’s ends, the city test, the Purana background and the other dates of the fortnight.
Margashirsha Purnima: 23:55 on 12 December to 21:38 on 13 December
There is no Datta Jayanti line in the site’s 2027 festival table, so the Purnima is worked out with its tithi code, which is tested at every build against the 86 table instants that carry a start and an end and stays within 1 min of them. It puts the start at 23:55 on Sunday 12 December, late that night and close to civil midnight; no date on this page depends on which side of midnight that falls. The end is the full moon itself, 21:38 on Monday 13 December, and the DE421 lunation table gives the full moon at that same clock reading. Between the two lie 21 hours 43 min.
New Delhi’s daily panchang therefore runs in plain order across the three mornings:
- Sunday 12 December: sun up at 07:03, down at 17:25; Shukla Chaturdashi at sunrise
- Monday 13 December: sun up at 07:04, down at 17:25; Purnima at sunrise
- Tuesday 14 December: sun up at 07:05, down at 17:25; Krishna Pratipada at sunrise
One sunrise, the Monday’s, sits inside the Purnima, and so does the sunset at 17:25 on that day. The Sunday evening is over long before the tithi starts, and the Tuesday dawn comes after it has ended. Compare the Datta Jayanti 2026 page, where the full moon opened and closed between two New Delhi sunrises and the morning and evening readings went to different days. Nothing like that happens in 2027.
The Evening Test, City by City
Datta temples and the almanacs of the Datta tradition fix the janma, the birth, at dusk on the full moon, so the deciding question is whether the Purnima still holds after sunset. A morning reading matters as well, because some calendars attach the full moon’s bath and charity to sunrise. For the evening this page uses the same window the site’s festival table prints as “pradosh” on every row: from sunset to 2 hours 24 min after it. That is a working test drawn from the table’s own convention, not a puja muhurat, and nothing here is timed to it.
| City | Sunrise 13 December | Sunset | Window closes | Purnima left after it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| New Delhi | 07:04 | 17:25 | 19:49 | 1 hour 49 min |
| Jammu | 07:23 | 17:25 | 19:49 | 1 hour 49 min |
| Jaipur | 07:06 | 17:34 | 19:58 | 1 hour 40 min |
| Varanasi | 06:34 | 17:09 | 19:33 | 2 hours 5 min |
| Kolkata | 06:07 | 16:53 | 19:17 | 2 hours 21 min |
| Guwahati | 06:01 | 16:32 | 18:56 | 2 hours 42 min |
| Ahmedabad | 07:11 | 17:55 | 20:19 | 1 hour 19 min |
| Mumbai | 07:02 | 18:02 | 20:26 | 1 hour 12 min |
| Pune | 06:57 | 17:59 | 20:23 | 1 hour 15 min |
| Nashik | 07:00 | 17:57 | 20:21 | 1 hour 17 min |
| Aurangabad | 06:54 | 17:51 | 20:15 | 1 hour 23 min |
| Nagpur | 06:41 | 17:33 | 19:57 | 1 hour 41 min |
| Goa | 06:51 | 18:05 | 20:29 | 1 hour 9 min |
| Hyderabad | 06:36 | 17:43 | 20:07 | 1 hour 31 min |
| Bangalore | 06:32 | 17:54 | 20:18 | 1 hour 20 min |
| Chennai | 06:21 | 17:43 | 20:07 | 1 hour 31 min |
| Kochi | 06:32 | 18:05 | 20:29 | 1 hour 9 min |
| Thiruvananthapuram | 06:27 | 18:05 | 20:29 | 1 hour 9 min |
The table shows 18 cities; the check behind it runs over all 38. Where the sun sets later, in the south and west, the window closes nearer the full moon, and the slimmest remainder anywhere on the list is 1 hour 9 min, at Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram and Goa. In the north-east, Guwahati keeps 2 hours 42 min in hand. On the morning side, every city’s 13 December sunrise comes six hours or more into the Purnima. Looking at the neighbours, the tithi opens at least 3 hours 26 min after the 12 December window has shut wherever you are, and it has ended more than eight hours before the 14 December sunrise. Every one of these margins is far wider than half an hour, so the code’s small disagreement with the tables cannot move the answer. For your own town’s sun, use the panchang tool.
Atri, Anasuya and the Son Called Datta
In the fourth book of the Bhagavata Purana, the sage Atri and his wife Anasuya are granted three sons, each a portion of one of the three great gods: Soma from Brahma, Datta from Vishnu and Durvasa from Shiva. The same Purana lists Dattatreya among Vishnu’s avatars. The Markandeya Purana also names Atri and Anasuya as his parents and devotes a long run of chapters to his instruction of King Alarka in yoga. The Datta sampradaya of Maharashtra and Karnataka reads the figure more broadly than the Bhagavata’s division of portions: it worships Dattatreya as one person in whom Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva are joined, which is the meaning its devotees give to the three heads of his images.
The Gurucharitra Reading (गुरुचरित्र पारायण)
For Marathi-speaking Datta devotees the book of the season is the Gurucharitra of Saraswati Gangadhar, an account of Shripad Shrivallabh and Narasimha Saraswati, whom the tradition counts as incarnations of Datta. A parayan is a reading of the whole text, and the custom in many Maharashtrian homes and temples is to spread it over seven days and finish on the Jayanti. How the reading is divided, and what discipline goes with it, are matters for the household or the temple; this page sets no start date for it and makes no claim about what completing it does.
Annapurna Jayanti on the Same Monday (अन्नपूर्णा जयंती)
Many north Indian almanacs also mark Annapurna Jayanti on this full moon, and in Varanasi the observance centres on the temple of Annapurna Devi close to Kashi Vishwanath. Whichever test a calendar applies to it, morning or daylight, the Purnima of 2027 answers Monday 13 December, so the split the 2026 page had to describe does not arise. Local temples remain the authority on their own rites.
Mrigashira at the Full Moon
Margashirsha takes its name from the nakshatra Mrigashira, the one its full moon is expected to fall near. In 2027 the full moon does fall in it. At New Delhi’s sunrise on 13 December the Moon is in Rohini, and by the full moon at 21:38 the lunation table places it in Mrigashira, in Taurus. A year earlier the December full moon fell one nakshatra further on, in Ardra; the full moon’s nakshatra drifts from year to year, and the month’s name does not change with it.
The Bright Fortnight Around It
Three table dates frame the Purnima. Vivah Panchami opens the run on Friday 3 December, ten days earlier, and every sunrise from then up to the full moon reads a bright-half tithi. Mokshada Ekadashi, which the same table row also names Geeta Jayanti, comes on Thursday 9 December, four days before Datta Jayanti; the rest of the year’s fasts of that kind are on the Ekadashi 2027 list. After the full moon, the table’s Dhanu Kharmas begins on Thursday 16 December, three days later, with the whole Purnima already behind it; the window is set out on the Kharmas 2027 page. The Datta lineages treat Dattatreya as the first guru; the year’s other full moon kept for the guru has its own page, Guru Purnima 2027.
Datta Jayanti 2027 in Brief
- Date: Monday 13 December 2027, by sunrise and by the evening window, in every listed city
- Purnima (computed): 23:55 on 12 December to the full moon at 21:38 on 13 December
- New Delhi, 13 December: sunrise 07:04, sunset 17:25
- Full moon nakshatra: Mrigashira, Moon in Taurus
- Earlier in the fortnight: Vivah Panchami on 3 December, Mokshada Ekadashi on 9 December
Every full moon of the year, with its own test, is on the Purnima 2027 list, and the month’s other observances are on the December 2027 vrat and tyohar list. The 2027 festival calendar covers the whole year, and the festival hub gathers the observances in the site’s tables.
