Kharmas 2027 Dates: Meena in March, Dhanu in December

Three Kharmas Stretches Touch 2027 (खरमास 2027)
Kharmas is the Sun’s stay in the two signs the classical scheme gives to Jupiter: Meena (Pisces) and Dhanu (Sagittarius). A calendar year holds one whole Pisces stay and two pieces of Sagittarius ones, so 2027 opens inside a Kharmas, has a second in March and April, and ends inside a third. Every instant below is a sidereal Sun ingress from the JPL DE421 ephemeris, in IST.
| Stretch | Begins (Sun enters) | Ends (Sun leaves) | Length |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dhanu Kharmas (tail) (धनु) | Wednesday, 16 December 2026, 10:20 | Thursday, 14 January 2027, 21:05 | begins in 2026 |
| Meena Kharmas (मीन) | Monday, 15 March 2027, 06:55 | Wednesday, 14 April 2027, 15:23 | 30 days, 8 hours and 28 minutes |
| Dhanu Kharmas (धनु) | Thursday, 16 December 2027, 16:33 | Saturday, 15 January 2028, 03:17 | 29 days, 10 hours and 44 minutes |
Counted the way the site’s muhurat engine counts them, with both edge days closed in full, 61 days of 2027 fall inside a Kharmas: the first fortnight of January, the whole of the Pisces stay, and the last sixteen days of December.
January: the End of the December 2026 Kharmas
The year begins with the Sun still in Sagittarius, and it crosses into Capricorn at 21:05 IST on Thursday, 14 January 2027, after New Delhi’s sunset. That stretch, its evening ending and the festivals near it are set out on the Kharmas December 2026 page; this page starts where it stops.
Meena Kharmas: Start Date and Time (मीन खरमास)
The Sun enters sidereal Pisces at 06:55 IST on Monday, 15 March 2027, and leaves it for Aries at 15:23 IST on Wednesday, 14 April 2027. The interval is 30 days, 8 hours and 28 minutes. The site’s Kharmas table and its muhurat engine both name 15 March as the first day and 14 April as the last.
The opening minute sits close to dawn, and that is where a reader can be told two different first days. At New Delhi the Sun rises at 06:31 on 15 March, 24 minutes before the ingress, so the sunrise of that day still belongs to Aquarius. A calendar that counts a solar day from sunrise and asks which sign held the Sun at that moment makes 16 March the first full day in Pisces; one that dates the period from the ingress itself makes it 15 March. Neither is a mistake. They are two conventions applied to one instant, and the ephemeris does not choose between them.
The order is the same across the country. The site’s sunrise code puts 15 March’s sunrise ahead of 06:55 in every city checked here — Delhi 06:31, Jaipur 06:36, Ahmedabad 06:49, Mumbai 06:47, Pune 06:43, Chennai 06:16, Kolkata 05:45 and Guwahati 05:32 — and the narrowest margin is Ahmedabad’s, 6 minutes. The far end gives no such trouble: the Aries ingress comes at 15:23, in the afternoon, after the 05:57 sunrise and before the 18:46 sunset at New Delhi, so 14 April is a Pisces morning on any count and 15 April is the first morning after.
The sunrise tithi at New Delhi is Shukla Saptami on the first day and Shukla Ashtami on the last. The Sun is already in Purva Bhadrapada when it reaches Pisces, a nakshatra the spans table places across Aquarius and Pisces, having entered it on 5 March. It crosses into Uttara Bhadrapada on 18 March and Revati on 1 April, and it enters Ashwini at the same minute it enters Aries, because the two boundaries coincide.
Holashtak and Holi at the Start of Meena Kharmas (होलाष्टक)
Holika Dahan falls on Sunday, 21 March 2027, and Holi on Monday, 22 March. Both are inside Meena Kharmas. The site’s engine reckons Holashtak as the eight days ending at Holika Dahan, 14 March to 21 March, so it opens one day before the Sun reaches Pisces and the two closures share seven days. Merged, they make a single closed run of 32 days, 14 March to 14 April.
The engine marks Holashtak as regional, with a note that it is observed in Punjab, Himachal, Haryana and much of north India and not generally in the south or in Bengal, and its comments record that two counts of Holashtak are in circulation and that it applies the wider one. For a family that does not keep Holashtak the closed run starts on 15 March; for one that does, the last open day before it is 13 March.
The lunations line up with the festivals. The full moon of 22 March at 16:13 is the instant at which Holika Dahan’s Purnima, opened at 18:22 on 21 March, comes to an end. The Holika Dahan 2027 and Holi 2027 pages give the rest of each day.
Gudi Padwa, Chaitra Navratri and Ram Navami
The new moon inside Meena Kharmas comes at 05:21 on 7 April, with the Moon in Pisces at Revati, and it opens the Pratipada of Gudi Padwa and Ugadi, which the festival table dates to Wednesday, 7 April 2027; at New Delhi that Pratipada is under way before the 06:05 sunrise. The same day begins Chaitra Navratri, so the spring Navratri of 2027 opens inside Kharmas.
It does not close inside it. Ram Navami, dated by the tithi at midday, falls on Thursday, 15 April 2027, the first day after Kharmas. The table’s stamp for the start of the Navami tithi is 15:24 on 14 April, one minute after the 15:23 Aries ingress: the Sun leaves Pisces and the Navami begins within the same minute or two, on the afternoon before the festival. Hanuman Jayanti follows on 20 April. The Navratri 2027 page covers the nine days.
Of the 45 dates in the site’s 2027 festival table, three fall inside Meena Kharmas: Holika Dahan, Holi and Gudi Padwa (with Ugadi and the first day of Chaitra Navratri). Maha Shivratri, on 6 March, comes before Holashtak begins. North Indian panchang custom treats Kharmas as a pause on beginnings and not on worship, so Holi is played, Navratri is kept and the vrats that fall inside it run as they would at any other time; what the custom holds over is the samskara or undertaking a family would look up a muhurat for.
Gudi Padwa raises one more question. The site’s 2026 table lists it among the sade teen muhurat, the three and a half days the tradition holds auspicious without examining the panchang, and the 2026 Gudi Padwa, 19 March 2026, also fell inside that year’s Meena Kharmas. The site keeps that list for 2026 only, because each of the four days is fixed by a day-part rule of its own that it has not computed for other years. This page follows it and names no abujh day for 2027; the engine closes 7 April for Kharmas like any other day of the stretch.
What the Engine Closes Inside Meena Kharmas
Of the 10 occasions the site’s muhurat engine evaluates, Kharmas closes 9; the one left open is long travel / yatra, which carries no closures. Inside the stretch the engine still runs the five limbs, and the result shows how much Kharmas is doing. For marriage, two days in the stretch pass tithi, vara, nakshatra, yoga and karana together, 15 March and 1 April, and are closed only by Kharmas (and, on 15 March, by Holashtak as well). For griha pravesh the count is three: 15 March, 24 March and 1 April.
Those days are not offered here as alternatives. They are the engine’s own record of why a day is out, and the March and April 2027 marriage pages show every day of both months with its reason. Even a day that clears every filter is a shortlist entry and not a muhurat; electing the window inside the day, against the charts of the people involved, is a second step the engine does not take.
The Open Stretches Between the Kharmas
The engine’s 2027 calendar has three open stretches, and each is bounded on at least one side by a Kharmas:
- 15 January to 13 March, 58 days, from the morning after the January Kharmas to the eve of Holashtak. The strict marriage filter clears six days in it, all before Holashtak begins.
- From 15 April, the day after Meena Kharmas. In April the strict marriage filter clears one day after Kharmas ends; the May and June pages carry on from there. This stretch is ended by a planetary asta before Chaturmas begins at Devshayani Ekadashi on 14 July; this page does not print asta boundaries.
- 11 November to 15 December, 35 days, from the morning after Dev Uthani Ekadashi to the eve of the December Kharmas. The strict marriage filter clears four days in it; see the November and December 2027 marriage pages.
Meena Kharmas also falls inside Uttarayana as the site reckons it for 2027, the half that opens at the January Capricorn ingress and runs to the Cancer ingress of 17 July 2027. The engine’s note on upanayan records a strong preference for that half, so in 2027 a sacred-thread ceremony has two Uttarayana stretches clear of Kharmas, one either side of the Pisces stay. The wedding season guide and the open and closed windows page explain the other closures, and the muhurat finder shows the reason for every day it rules out.
Dhanu Kharmas 2027: Start Date and Time (धनु खरमास)
The December Kharmas begins when the Sun enters sidereal Sagittarius at 16:33 IST on Thursday, 16 December 2027, and ends when it enters Capricorn at 03:17 IST on Saturday, 15 January 2028: 29 days, 10 hours and 44 minutes, nearly a day shorter than the Pisces stay, because the Sun crosses this part of the zodiac at more than a degree a day. The sunrise tithi at New Delhi on the first day is Krishna Tritiya.
The opening falls late in the afternoon. At New Delhi the Sun sets at 17:26 that day, 53 minutes after the ingress, and by sunrise reckoning the first full Sagittarius day is 17 December. Further east the margin shrinks: Kolkata’s computed sunset is 16:54, and Guwahati’s is 16:33, the same minute as the ingress. For any rule that asks whether a crossing came by day or after dark, Guwahati on 16 December is a case the arithmetic cannot settle, and a local almanac has to.
Its End Is a Pre-Dawn Ingress, Not a Festival Date
The closing ingress, 03:17 on 15 January, comes in the small hours, well before that morning’s 07:15 sunrise as the 2028 festival table records it. That reverses the January 2027 pattern. There the Capricorn ingress comes after sunset, so the whole daylight of 14 January is still in Sagittarius; in 2028 it comes before dawn, so the daylight of 15 January is already in Capricorn and the last Sagittarius sunrise is 14 January’s. The cause is the drift the December 2026 page describes: the ingress arrives about six hours later on the clock each year, and this year that carries it past midnight. The table still names 15 January as the end date because that is the date of the ingress.
The same instant is the Makar Sankranti ingress. On which day Sankranti is kept, with its bath, daan and punya kaal, is decided by rules about where a crossing sits against sunrise and sunset, and regional almanacs apply them differently. This site publishes no Sankranti observance date for any year, so the end of Kharmas is given here as an instant only; for the observance, use your own family’s panchang. The Makar Sankranti 2027 page covers the festival itself.
The site’s 2027 festival table has no date inside this stretch; its last entry, Mokshada Ekadashi, falls a week before it begins. The 2028 table puts Paush Purnima on 12 January 2028, inside it, and Sakat Chauth on 15 January, its last day. The daily panchang this page reads for sunrise tithis ends on 31 December 2027, and the engine’s closure set ends with 2027 too, so neither the 2028 sunrise tithis nor the open days after this Kharmas are worked out here.
Malmas 2027 and the Adhika Maas (मलमास)
The site’s panchang data names the Kharmas “Kharmas / Malamas”, so “malmas 2027” here means the same three stretches as above. It keeps the intercalary lunar month as a separate entry, the adhika maas, defined as a lunation with no solar ingress inside it. 2026 had one, Adhika Jyeshtha, from 17 May 2026 to 15 June 2026. The 2027 table has none, and neither does 2028’s. If the malmas you were told about is the intercalary month and not the Sun in Pisces or Sagittarius, then 2027 has no such month, and a list that carries an adhika maas into 2027 has copied it from 2026.
Do Not Copy These Dates Into 2028
Meena Kharmas keeps the same dates in 2026 and 2027: 15 March to 14 April both years. In 2028 it runs 14 March to 13 April 2028, a calendar day earlier at both ends, because the leap day of 29 February 2028 sits between the two springs. A solar period keeps its date to within a day; a list that copies the day forward is right most years and wrong in some.
For a single date, the daily panchang gives the tithi, nakshatra, yoga and karana, and the muhurat hub runs the engine for every occasion and month. In Hindi: खरमास 2027 कब से कब तक: मार्च में मीन, दिसम्बर में धनु.
After Kharmas, the Chart
The Kharmas edges on this page are the same for everyone. Choosing a day after them is a second step that starts from the birth chart. The Janam Kundli report computes yours from date, time and place of birth: the lagna, the Moon sign and nakshatra, each of the seven grahas by sign and house, and the dasha sequence with dates. It does not pick a muhurat or read Kharmas for you; it gives you the chart a pandit would work from.
