Rang Panchami 2027 Date: Saturday 27 March, City by City
Published 2026-10-27 | Live Pandit Ji
Rang Panchami (रंग पंचमी) in 2027 is on Saturday 27 March. That is five days after Holi’s colour day of Monday 22 March and six after the Holika Dahan bonfire of Sunday 21 March. The Panchami of the dark fortnight is the tithi at sunrise that Saturday in all twelve cities this page checks, from Mumbai and Nagpur through Indore and Bhopal to Jaipur, Agra and Delhi, so there is a single date this year and no second morning to weigh.
The Krishna Panchami of 2027
No row of the site’s festival table covers Rang Panchami, so the tithi’s opening and close are taken from the site’s own tithi code. That code is compared on every build with 86 festival-table rows and matches all of them to within 1 min.
- Krishna Panchami opens: 12:44 on Friday 26 March
- Krishna Panchami closes: 13:34 on Saturday 27 March
- Length: 24 hours 50 min
The Panchami arrives shortly after noon on 26 March, a day whose 06:18 New Delhi sunrise still belongs to the Chaturthi. Its first sunrise is the 06:17 dawn of 27 March, with 7 hours 17 min of the tithi still to run. It gives way to the Shashthi at 13:34 that afternoon, before sunset at 18:36. Calendars that name a day by the tithi current at its sunrise therefore give Rang Panchami to Saturday; the afternoon and evening of Friday 26 March also fall inside the Panchami, but that day is counted as the Chaturthi.
Counting Five Days From Holi
The festival table puts Holika Dahan on Sunday 21 March and Holi on Monday 22 March. The full moon sits between them: Purnima opens at 18:22 on 21 March, just before that evening’s 18:32 sunset, on a day whose sunrise is still the Chaturdashi. The table’s rule for the bonfire is the Purnima in the hours after sunset, so Holika Dahan takes that Sunday night; the next morning, 22 March, wakes in the Purnima and is the colour day. The site’s computed Purnima matches the Holika Dahan row to within 1 min.
From that Purnima morning the New Delhi sunrises step through the dark fortnight one tithi at a time:
- Monday 22 March: Purnima at the 06:23 sunrise; it ends at 16:13 that day
- Tuesday 23 March: Krishna Pratipada at the 06:22 sunrise; it ends at 14:28 that day
- Wednesday 24 March: Krishna Dwitiya at the 06:21 sunrise; it ends at 13:14 that day
- Thursday 25 March: Krishna Tritiya at the 06:19 sunrise; it ends at 12:38 that day
- Friday 26 March: Krishna Chaturthi at the 06:18 sunrise; it ends at 12:44 that day
- Saturday 27 March: Krishna Panchami at the 06:17 sunrise; it ends at 13:34 that day
Every tithi in that run ends between noon and five in the afternoon of its own sunrise day, so each takes exactly one sunrise. None is skipped (a kshaya tithi, which begins and ends between two dawns) and none is doubled (a vriddhi tithi, which holds two). The tithis are not all a day long, running from 22 hours 15 min for the Pratipada to 24 hours 50 min for the Panchami, but that drift of a few hours never carries a close across a dawn. With six tithis on six mornings, the Panchami falls exactly five calendar days after Holi, which is where the common “five days after Holi” comes from. Counted from the bonfire night instead, the gap is six days. In a year where one of these tithis is skipped or repeated, the “five days” shorthand slips by one, and the sunrise reading decides. The eight days before the bonfire are on the Holashtak 2027 page, and the colour day itself on the Holi 2027 page.
Chaitra or Phalguna: the Month Name Differs
In the purnimanta reckoning used in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and most of the north, a month ends at the full moon, so the fortnight after Holi already belongs to Chaitra and the day is Chaitra Krishna Panchami. Maharashtra’s calendars run amanta, closing the month at the new moon, and there the same fortnight is still the second half of Phalguna, so the same Saturday is Phalguna Krishna Panchami. The tithi, the instant and the date are identical; only the month label changes. The two reckonings are set out on the Phalgun month 2027 and Chaitra month 2027 pages.
Twelve Cities at Their Own Sunrise
The instant a tithi opens or closes is shared by every town in India, but each town meets it at a different clock time of dawn. Below, each cell is the tithi in force at that city’s own sunrise, computed with the solar routine that feeds the city panchang pages. The list leans to the regions that keep the day. Ujjain and Mathura have no city record on the site, so they are not shown; Indore is the nearest listed city to Ujjain, and Agra the nearest to Mathura.
| City | 26 March | 27 March | 28 March | Sunrise 27 March |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mumbai | Chaturthi | Panchami | Shashthi | 06:37 |
| Pune | Chaturthi | Panchami | Shashthi | 06:33 |
| Nashik | Chaturthi | Panchami | Shashthi | 06:33 |
| Aurangabad | Chaturthi | Panchami | Shashthi | 06:27 |
| Nagpur | Chaturthi | Panchami | Shashthi | 06:11 |
| Indore | Chaturthi | Panchami | Shashthi | 06:24 |
| Bhopal | Chaturthi | Panchami | Shashthi | 06:18 |
| Udaipur | Chaturthi | Panchami | Shashthi | 06:32 |
| Jodhpur | Chaturthi | Panchami | Shashthi | 06:34 |
| Jaipur | Chaturthi | Panchami | Shashthi | 06:23 |
| Agra | Chaturthi | Panchami | Shashthi | 06:14 |
| Delhi | Chaturthi | Panchami | Shashthi | 06:17 |
The rows agree. On 27 March, Nagpur sees the sun first, at 06:11, and Mumbai last, at 06:37, a spread of 26 min. The Panchami still has more than 6 hours left at the latest of those sunrises, and it opens more than 6 hours after even the latest dawn of 26 March. A margin that wide leaves no town on this list with a case for 26 March or 28 March.
How the Day Is Kept
The name says what the day is for: रंग, colour, on the Panchami. Where the custom is strong, dry gulal and coloured water come out again on this morning, a second round of the play that began on Holi. In much of Maharashtra the Panchami, rather than the morning after the bonfire, is the day for colour; that earlier morning is known there as Dhulivandan.
Indore is known for its gair (गेर), a procession that moves through the old city on Rang Panchami with music, colour thrown from the procession and coloured water sprayed over the street. Parts of Rajasthan and the Braj country around Mathura also mark the Panchami with colour. Which of these a family takes part in, and whether a household plays at all, is a matter of local and family custom.
This page describes how the day is kept and makes no claim about what keeping it does for anyone.
What Comes Next in the Fortnight
Three sunrises after Rang Panchami, the Krishna Ashtami of Tuesday 30 March is Sheetala Ashtami, or Basoda, kept with food cooked the day before. The rest of March is on the March 2027 vrat and tyohar list.
