vimshottari antardasha

Jupiter Mahadasha, Mars Antardasha (Guru–Mangal)

11 months 6 days (classical) · 341 days (solar) · sub-period 8 of 9 in a 16-year mahadasha

The Mars antardasha is the eighth of the nine sub-periods inside the Jupiter mahadasha. 16 × 7 ÷ 120 makes the Jupiter–Mars sub-period 11 months 6 days on the classical year of twelve thirty-day months, which is how the texts state it, or 341 days on the solar year of 365.2425 days that the dasha calculator uses.

Mars’s turn in the Jupiter mahadasha comes only after Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Ketu, Venus, the Sun and the Moon have run, which takes 12 years 8 months. When the Jupiter–Mars sub-period gives way to Jupiter–Rahu, 2 years 4 months 24 days of the Jupiter mahadasha remains.

Mars’s 7 years make every Mars antardasha 7/120 of the mahadasha containing it, so inside Jupiter’s 16 years the Jupiter–Mars sub-period is the seventh-longest of the nine, level with Jupiter–Ketu, because Ketu and Mars each run 7 years as mahadashas.

The Nine Pratyantardashas of Jupiter–Mars

A pratyantardasha of Jupiter–Mars is 16 × 7 × its own lord’s years ÷ 14,400, and the nine run in cycle order starting from Mars. Venus’s is the longest inside Jupiter–Mars at 56 days and the Sun’s the shortest at 17 days, on the classical year and rounded to the day.

How Jupiter and Mars Stand to Each Other

On the natural friendship table, Jupiter and Mars each count the other a friend. The Jupiter–Marsrelationship is mutual, so it reads the same from either lord.

Counted between the signs they own, Aries is the 5th from Jupiter’s Sagittarius, Scorpio is the 12th from Jupiter’s Sagittarius, Aries is the 2nd from Jupiter’s Pisces and Scorpio is the 9th from Jupiter’s Pisces. Whatever the ascendant, the houses Jupiter rules and the houses Mars rules sit at those same distances from each other in the chart, so the Jupiter–Mars sub-period always joins lordships that far apart.

The Same Pair the Other Way Round: Mars–Jupiter

16 × 7 equals 7 × 16, so the Jupiter antardasha of the Mars mahadasha is exactly as long as Jupiter–Mars: 11 months 6 days. Nothing else about Mars–Jupiter matches. It is the third sub-period of Mars’s 7 years rather than the eighth of Jupiter’s 16; it opens after 1 year 5 months 15 days of the Mars mahadasha, against 12 years 8 months here; and its pratyantars start from Jupiter instead of Mars.

What the Texts Assign to Jupiter and Mars

The karaka list the tables give Jupiter, the mahadasha lord, is children, teachers and gurus, higher learning and dharma; for Mars, the lord of the Jupiter–Mars sub-period, it is younger siblings, land and property, weapons, engineering and the armed forces. Parashari practice reads the sub-period through the houses each of the two owns and occupies in the birth chart, and through where Mars stands counted from Jupiter there. None of that is a forecast, and this page makes none: without a chart, Jupiter–Mars is a length and a position, and the 11 months 6 days above is the whole of what can be said about it in general.

A birth with the Moon in Punarvasu, Vishakha or Purva Bhadrapada opens life inside the Jupiter mahadasha itself, part-way through, and whether the Jupiter–Mars sub-period is still ahead depends on how far the Moon had gone into the nakshatra. For a birth in Mrigashira, Chitra or Dhanishta, the Mars mahadasha comes first, and the Jupiter mahadasha is the third in that sequence.

The Other Sub-Periods of the Jupiter Mahadasha

The full table for the Jupiter mahadasha, with where each sub-period opens and closes, is on the Jupiter mahadasha page. How the Jupiter mahadasha is read as a whole is in our Jupiter mahadasha article, and the system itself in Vimshottari dasha explained. This page in Hindi: गुरु महादशा में मंगल अंतर्दशा.

When does Jupiter–Mars run in your chart?

The dates come from the Moon’s longitude at birth. The calculator gives them; a pandit reads what the two lords hold in your chart.
