vimshottari antardasha

Jupiter Mahadasha, Moon Antardasha (Guru–Chandra)

1 year 4 months (classical) · 487 days (solar) · sub-period 7 of 9 in a 16-year mahadasha

The Moon antardasha is the seventh of the nine sub-periods inside the Jupiter mahadasha. 16 × 10 ÷ 120 makes the Jupiter–Moon sub-period 1 year 4 months on the classical year of twelve thirty-day months, which is how the texts state it, or 487 days on the solar year of 365.2425 days that the dasha calculator uses.

The Moon’s turn in the Jupiter mahadasha comes only after Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Ketu, Venus and the Sun have run, which takes 11 years 4 months. When the Jupiter–Moon sub-period gives way to Jupiter–Mars, 3 years 4 months of the Jupiter mahadasha remains.

The Moon’s 10 years make every Moon antardasha 10/120 of the mahadasha containing it, so inside Jupiter’s 16 years the Jupiter–Moon sub-period is the sixth-longest of the nine.

The Nine Pratyantardashas of Jupiter–Moon

A pratyantardasha of Jupiter–Moon is 16 × 10 × its own lord’s years ÷ 14,400, and the nine run in cycle order starting from the Moon. Venus’s is the longest inside Jupiter–Moon at 80 days and the Sun’s the shortest at 24 days, on the classical year and rounded to the day.

How Jupiter and the Moon Stand to Each Other

On the natural friendship table, Jupiter counts the Moon a friend while the Moon counts Jupiter neutral. The table is not symmetric, so the Jupiter–Moon relationship has to be quoted in both directions, as it is here, rather than as one word.

Counted between the signs they own, Cancer is the 8th from Jupiter’s Sagittarius and Cancer is the 5th from Jupiter’s Pisces. Whatever the ascendant, the houses Jupiter rules and the houses the Moon rules sit at those same distances from each other in the chart, so the Jupiter–Moon sub-period always joins lordships that far apart.

Jupiter is exalted in Cancer, a sign the Moon owns. In the Jupiter–Moon sub-period, then, one lord's dignity is placed on the other’s ground.

The Same Pair the Other Way Round: Moon–Jupiter

16 × 10 equals 10 × 16, so the Jupiter antardasha of the Moon mahadasha is exactly as long as Jupiter–Moon: 1 year 4 months. Nothing else about Moon–Jupiter matches. It is the fourth sub-period of the Moon’s 10 years rather than the seventh of Jupiter’s 16; it opens after 2 years 11 months of the Moon mahadasha, against 11 years 4 months here; and its pratyantars start from Jupiter instead of the Moon.

What the Texts Assign to Jupiter and the Moon

The karaka list the tables give Jupiter, the mahadasha lord, is children, teachers and gurus, higher learning and dharma; for the Moon, the lord of the Jupiter–Moon sub-period, it is mother, the mind (manas), water, milk, the public, comfort and the home. Parashari practice reads the sub-period through the houses each of the two owns and occupies in the birth chart, and through where the Moon stands counted from Jupiter there. None of that is a forecast, and this page makes none: without a chart, Jupiter–Moon is a length and a position, and the 1 year 4 months above is the whole of what can be said about it in general.

A birth with the Moon in Punarvasu, Vishakha or Purva Bhadrapada opens life inside the Jupiter mahadasha itself, part-way through, and whether the Jupiter–Moon sub-period is still ahead depends on how far the Moon had gone into the nakshatra. For a birth in Rohini, Hasta or Shravana, the Moon mahadasha comes first, and the Jupiter mahadasha is the fourth in that sequence.

The Other Sub-Periods of the Jupiter Mahadasha

The full table for the Jupiter mahadasha, with where each sub-period opens and closes, is on the Jupiter mahadasha page. How the Jupiter mahadasha is read as a whole is in our Jupiter mahadasha article, and the system itself in Vimshottari dasha explained. This page in Hindi: गुरु महादशा में चन्द्र अंतर्दशा.

When does Jupiter–Moon run in your chart?

The dates come from the Moon’s longitude at birth. The calculator gives them; a pandit reads what the two lords hold in your chart.
