vimshottari antardasha

Venus Mahadasha, Jupiter Antardasha (Shukra–Guru)

2 years 8 months (classical) · 974 days (solar) · sub-period 6 of 9 in a 20-year mahadasha

The Jupiter antardasha is the sixth of the nine sub-periods inside the Venus mahadasha. 20 × 16 ÷ 120 makes the Venus–Jupiter sub-period 2 years 8 months on the classical year of twelve thirty-day months, which is how the texts state it, or 974 days on the solar year of 365.2425 days that the dasha calculator uses.

Jupiter’s turn in the Venus mahadasha comes only after Venus, the Sun, the Moon, Mars and Rahu have run, which takes 10 years 2 months. When the Venus–Jupiter sub-period gives way to Venus–Saturn, 7 years 2 months of the Venus mahadasha remains.

Jupiter’s 16 years make every Jupiter antardasha 16/120 of the mahadasha containing it, so inside Venus’s 20 years the Venus–Jupiter sub-period is the fifth-longest of the nine.

The Nine Pratyantardashas of Venus–Jupiter

A pratyantardasha of Venus–Jupiter is 20 × 16 × its own lord’s years ÷ 14,400, and the nine run in cycle order starting from Jupiter. Venus’s is the longest inside Venus–Jupiter at 160 days and the Sun’s the shortest at 48 days, on the classical year and rounded to the day.

How Venus and Jupiter Stand to Each Other

On the natural friendship table, Venus counts Jupiter neutral while Jupiter counts Venus an enemy. The table is not symmetric, so the Venus–Jupiter relationship has to be quoted in both directions, as it is here, rather than as one word.

Counted between the signs they own, Sagittarius is the 8th from Venus’s Taurus, Pisces is the 11th from Venus’s Taurus, Sagittarius is the 3rd from Venus’s Libra and Pisces is the 6th from Venus’s Libra. Whatever the ascendant, the houses Venus rules and the houses Jupiter rules sit at those same distances from each other in the chart, so the Venus–Jupiter sub-period always joins lordships that far apart.

Venus is exalted in Pisces, a sign Jupiter owns. In the Venus–Jupiter sub-period, then, one lord's dignity is placed on the other’s ground.

The Same Pair the Other Way Round: Jupiter–Venus

20 × 16 equals 16 × 20, so the Venus antardasha of the Jupiter mahadasha is exactly as long as Venus–Jupiter: 2 years 8 months. Nothing else about Jupiter–Venus matches. It is the fifth sub-period of Jupiter’s 16 years rather than the sixth of Venus’s 20; it opens after 7 years 10 months 12 days of the Jupiter mahadasha, against 10 years 2 months here; and its pratyantars start from Venus instead of Jupiter.

What the Texts Assign to Venus and Jupiter

The karaka list the tables give Venus, the mahadasha lord, is marriage, vehicles, art, music, luxury, hotels and cosmetics; for Jupiter, the lord of the Venus–Jupiter sub-period, it is children, teachers and gurus, higher learning and dharma. Parashari practice reads the sub-period through the houses each of the two owns and occupies in the birth chart, and through where Jupiter stands counted from Venus there. None of that is a forecast, and this page makes none: without a chart, Venus–Jupiter is a length and a position, and the 2 years 8 months above is the whole of what can be said about it in general.

A birth with the Moon in Bharani, Purva Phalguni or Purva Ashadha opens life inside the Venus mahadasha itself, part-way through, and whether the Venus–Jupiter sub-period is still ahead depends on how far the Moon had gone into the nakshatra. For a birth in Punarvasu, Vishakha or Purva Bhadrapada, the Jupiter mahadasha comes first, and the Venus mahadasha is the fifth in that sequence.

The Other Sub-Periods of the Venus Mahadasha

The full table for the Venus mahadasha, with where each sub-period opens and closes, is on the Venus mahadasha page. How the Venus mahadasha is read as a whole is in our Venus mahadasha article, and the system itself in Vimshottari dasha explained. This page in Hindi: शुक्र महादशा में गुरु अंतर्दशा.

When does Venus–Jupiter run in your chart?

The dates come from the Moon’s longitude at birth. The calculator gives them; a pandit reads what the two lords hold in your chart.
