Ganesh Chaturthi 2028: Wednesday, 23 August 2028

Ganesh Chaturthi in 2028 falls on Wednesday, 23 August 2028. It is kept on the Shukla Chaturthi of amanta Bhadrapada.

Why Ganesh Chaturthi Is on 23 August in 2028

The Shukla Chaturthi begins at 05:10 on 23 August 2028 and ends at 01:55 on 24 August 2028. The 2028 instants are the same everywhere; only the clock they are read on changes. The rule recorded for Ganesh Chaturthi tests the tithi at madhyahna, the middle part of the day between sunrise and sunset (“tithi at madhyahna”).

On 23 August 2028 the Sun rises at 05:54 and sets at 18:52 at New Delhi. The Shukla Chaturthi is already running at sunrise, so on 23 August 2028 the sunrise rule and the madhyahna rule agree.

In 2028 the Shukla Chaturthi lasts 20 hours 45 minutes, against 24 hours 37 minutes in 2026 and 22 hours 7 minutes in 2027: a tithi is twelve degrees of the Moon’s gain on the Sun, and the Moon never gains at a steady rate. The day itself runs 12 hours 58 minutes from sunrise to sunset at New Delhi, so its midpoint, the centre of madhyahna, falls near 12:23.

When the Shukla Chaturthi begins, the Moon is in Hasta, ruled by the Moon.

Ganesh Chaturthi in 2026, 2027 and 2028

Ganesh Chaturthi 2028 comes 12 days earlier in the calendar year than Ganesh Chaturthi 2027. Between Ganesh Chaturthi 2027 and Ganesh Chaturthi 2028 the lunation table has 12 new moons, and twelve lunations fall short of a solar year, so the date moves earlier.

In the 2028 table Ganesh Chaturthi comes 1 day after Hartalika Teej and 10 days before Anant Chaturdashi.

Within six days of Ganesh Chaturthi in 2028: Hartalika Teej (22 August).
