Purnima Tithi: Every Day It Held Sunrise, 2026 and 2027

13 days in 2026 · 12 in 2027 · sunrise at New Delhi

Purnima is the 15th of the 30 tithis, the bright fortnight’s 15th. A panchang names a day by the tithi running at sunrise, and between 1 January 2026 and 31 December 2027 Purnima was the tithi at sunrise in New Delhi on 25 days: 13 in 2026 and 12 in 2027. Twice it began after one sunrise and ended before the next, so it named no day at all (between the sunrises of 23 December 2026 and 24 December 2026; 20 February 2027 and 21 February 2027), and twice it held two sunrises in a row, naming two consecutive days (29 June 2026 and 30 June 2026; 18 June 2027 and 19 June 2027).

Its number, 15, is neither rikta nor among the tithis the muhurat filter favours, though the filter makes an exception for the Purnima itself where an occasion asks for a favoured tithi. A list of the days a tithi held sunrise is not a list of vrat days: an observance tied to a tithi is fixed by its own rule, which the festival pages apply one by one.

By weekday, Purnima held sunrise most often on Tuesdays and Fridays (5 times) and least on Wednesdays and Thursdays (2): Sunday 4, Monday 4, Tuesday 5, Wednesday 2, Thursday 2, Friday 5, Saturday 3. Over two years that spread is chance, not a pattern; the weekday and the tithi run on unrelated cycles.

Festivals that fell on a Purnima day: Paush Purnima (3 January 2026), Holi (3 March 2026), Hanuman Jayanti (2 April 2026), Buddha Purnima (1 May 2026), Guru Purnima (29 July 2026), Raksha Bandhan (28 August 2026), Pitru Paksha begins (26 September 2026), Kartik Purnima (24 November 2026), Paush Purnima (22 January 2027), Holi (22 March 2027), Hanuman Jayanti (20 April 2027), Buddha Purnima (20 May 2027), Guru Purnima (18 July 2027), Raksha Bandhan (17 August 2027), Pitru Paksha begins (15 September 2027) and Kartik Purnima (14 November 2027).

Every Full Moon, 2026 to 2028

The Purnima ends at the full moon itself. The lunation table gives each one’s instant in IST, the same moment everywhere, with the Moon’s sidereal sign and nakshatra.

In the cycle Purnima comes after Shukla Chaturdashi and before Krishna Pratipada; all 30 are on the tithi index. For what the five limbs are and how a day’s panchang is read, see reading the panchang and the guide to choosing a day. This page in Hindi: पूर्णिमा तिथि.
