Annual Profection Year: Your House and Lord by Age

Published 2026-10-28 | Live Pandit Ji

An annual profection needs two inputs, your rising sign and your age in completed years, and one division by twelve. No ephemeris is involved after birth. This page sets out the count, prints it for every age up to 95 and for everyone with a birthday in 2026 or 2027, works one Delhi birth through it in both zodiacs, and then measures something no single calculator’s output shows: how often a Western chart and a Vedic chart of the same birth name a different lord of the year.

The Count, Written as Arithmetic

The English Wikipedia article on profection traces the technique to Hellenistic astrology. It names Ptolemy, who placed profections in the last chapter of the Tetrabiblos alongside directions and transits, and Vettius Valens, who described a related technique under the Greek name paradosis, “handing over”; Persian and Arabic writers later called the ruler of the profected sign the sālkhudā, the lord of the year. In the simplest annual form the article describes, the rising sign belongs to the first year of life, the next sign to the second, and so on round the zodiac.

Put as a rule: if you have completed a years, divide a by 12 and keep the remainder r. Your year is the house numbered r + 1, counted in whole signs from the rising sign, and its sign is the rising sign moved on by r signs. A baby in its first year has a = 0 and is in the 1st house; the count comes back to the 1st at 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, 72 and 84. The year changes on the birthday, so until then you are still in the previous house.

Ages 0 to 95 by House of the Year

Each row lists the completed ages whose profected year is that house. Read across a row and the ages climb by twelve.

House of the yearCompleted ages
1st0, 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, 72, 84
2nd1, 13, 25, 37, 49, 61, 73, 85
3rd2, 14, 26, 38, 50, 62, 74, 86
4th3, 15, 27, 39, 51, 63, 75, 87
5th4, 16, 28, 40, 52, 64, 76, 88
6th5, 17, 29, 41, 53, 65, 77, 89
7th6, 18, 30, 42, 54, 66, 78, 90
8th7, 19, 31, 43, 55, 67, 79, 91
9th8, 20, 32, 44, 56, 68, 80, 92
10th9, 21, 33, 45, 57, 69, 81, 93
11th10, 22, 34, 46, 58, 70, 82, 94
12th11, 23, 35, 47, 59, 71, 83, 95

The house number depends only on age. Two people of the same age are in the same numbered house whatever their rising signs; what differs between them is the sign that house falls in, and so its lord.

Which Ruler the Lord of the Year Comes From

The Wikipedia article gives the domicile ruler of the profected sign as the lord of the year. This site keeps its sign lords in one table, and the page takes them from its ruler column. That column names seven bodies for the twelve signs: Mars, Venus, Mercury, Jupiter and Saturn hold two signs each, and the Moon and Sun one each. The same table has a separate westernCoRuler column with three entries, for Scorpio (Mars; Pluto in the co-ruler column), Aquarius (Saturn; Uranus in the co-ruler column) and Pisces (Jupiter; Neptune in the co-ruler column). Those planets were found long after the Hellenistic texts were written, and the site’s table records them as a modern Western addition, so they play no part in the count here. A calculator set to modern rulers will print a different lord for those three signs.

One feature of the column matters below. Only one pair of neighbouring signs shares a ruler: Capricorn and Aquarius, both Saturn. Every other sign has a different ruler from the sign after it.

Your 2026 and 2027 Profection Year

The age you complete on your birthday in a calendar year is that year minus your birth year. That gives a twelve-year cycle of birth years for each house. For example, anyone born in 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, 2011 and 2023 reaches, on the 2027 birthday, an age whose year is the 5th house. Births from 1950 on:

Each birth year moves down one row between the two columns. Births in 2027 sit in the 1st row of the 2027 column, because a child in its first year has completed no years at all.

One Delhi Birth in Both Zodiacs

Take the illustrative birth the site’s varshphal page uses: 15 August 1990 at 10:30 IST in Delhi. The site’s lagna code puts the sidereal (Lahiri) ascendant at Virgo 28° and the tropical ascendant, in the zodiac Western software uses, at Libra 22°; the gap is the ayanamsa, 23.7° for that date. Same birth, same houses, two rising signs:

From the birthday inAgeHouseSidereal sign (lord)Tropical sign (lord)
2026361stVirgo (Mercury)Libra (Venus)
2027372ndLibra (Venus)Scorpio (Mars)
2028383rdScorpio (Mars)Sagittarius (Jupiter)
2029394thSagittarius (Jupiter)Capricorn (Saturn)
2030405thCapricorn (Saturn)Aquarius (Saturn)

At 36 the count is back on the rising sign, so in 2026 this person is in the 1st house in both columns, but the sign is Virgo in one and Libra in the other, and the lords are Mercury and Venus. The lords agree in only one of the five rows, 2030, when the two signs are Capricorn and Aquarius. In 2027 the tropical sign is Scorpio, whose co-ruler column reads Pluto: a modern-ruler calculator would print a third answer for that year.

The Tajik Muntha Is the Same Count

Indian annual-chart practice has its own version. The muntha of the Tajik varshaphal, by the rule of the Tajika Nilakanthi that the varshphal page works through, starts in the birth lagna’s sign and moves one sign per completed year. That is a profection in the sidereal zodiac: the code behind this page checks that its sidereal column reproduces that page’s muntha sign and lord for every year it prints. Two things differ from a Western profection.

The first is the zodiac, as the table above shows. The second is the start of the year. A varshaphal year begins at the varsh pravesh, the moment the sidereal Sun returns to its birth longitude, not at midnight on the birthday. For the August birth, across the 62 returns from 1991 to 2052, that moment fell on the birthday date in 56 years, the day before in 2 and the day after in 4. The varshphal page’s second birth, 3 January 2001 late in the evening, never has its return on the birthday: it falls one day later in 48 of 51 years and two days later in 3. So that person, who turns 26 on 3 January 2027, will move to the 3rd house of a birthday-based profection that day, and the muntha will move on 4 January 2027. The sign reached is the same either way; only the day of the change moves. Persian and Arabic practice, by the Wikipedia account, also took the lord of the year at the solar return, so the birthday is not the only Western convention either.

How Often the Two Zodiacs Name Different Lords

To see how general the worked birth is, the code placed one birth every 10 minutes through 2026 at Delhi, 52,560 births in all, and computed both ascendants for each. This is a share of clock time, not of people. Results:

  • the tropical and sidereal rising signs differed for 80.8% of births, and where they differed the sidereal sign was always the one before the tropical sign, never two back
  • averaged over the twelve years of the cycle, the lord of the year differed for 74.0% of births
  • that second figure is exactly eleven-twelfths of the first: in a differing birth the two lords coincide only in the one year of twelve when the count puts the sidereal sign on Capricorn and the tropical one on Aquarius

Year by year of the cycle the share moves a little, because it depends on how many births have the particular rising sign that lands on Capricorn at that age. The table gives Delhi and the range over six cities:

House of the yearSidereal rising sign for which the lords agreeLord differs, DelhiRange over the six cities
1stCapricorn75.1%74.3–75.3%
2ndSagittarius73.9%73.6–73.9%
3rdScorpio73.0%72.9–73.4%
4thLibra72.9%72.7–73.7%
5thVirgo73.1%72.9–74.1%
6thLeo73.1%72.9–74.0%
7thCancer72.9%72.7–73.6%
8thGemini73.1%73.0–73.4%
9thTaurus74.1%73.7–74.2%
10thAries75.3%74.5–75.5%
11thPisces76.0%75.0–76.1%
12thAquarius75.9%74.9–76.1%

Every cell lies between 72.7% and 76.1%. The second column is a condition, not a promise of agreement: it applies only to the births whose tropical sign is one ahead.

Latitude does not change the headline share. Repeating the 2026 census at Kochi (9.9° N), Chennai (13.1° N), Mumbai (19.1° N), Kolkata (22.6° N), Delhi (28.6° N) and Amritsar (31.6° N), the share of differing rising signs stays within a twentieth of a percentage point of 80.8% from Kochi to Amritsar. Latitude does change how long each sign takes to rise: one sign’s share of the day moved by up to 1.4 points between these cities. But a sign and the sign opposite it together took the same time at every latitude sampled (their combined share moved by under a hundredth of a point), so the gains and losses cancel, and what is left is the ayanamsa as a fraction of a sign, 24.2° out of 30°. The page on how often the lagna changes has the rising times city by city.

Birth year does change it, because the ayanamsa grows. The same Delhi census for 1960 gives 77.7% differing rising signs and 71.2% differing lords; for 1990, 79.1% and 72.5%. The Lahiri ayanamsa page explains how it grows and gives its value for 2026 to 2029.

Finding Your Rising Sign

The ascendant calculator names your sidereal rising sign and the ruler from the same table, for a birth in one of its listed places, and below that prints the tropical longitude it started from, counted from 0° Aries. To get the tropical sign, divide that longitude by 30 and count one sign from Aries for every whole 30°. The calculator also says how near the ascendant is to a sign boundary. Near one, a few minutes of error in the recorded birth time can move the rising sign, and every profected sign and lord with it, though not the house number.

What This Page Does Not Give

A phrase like “5th house profection year” is often followed by a question about what that year holds, and this page leaves the question unanswered. A house number, a sign and a ruler are what the count produces, and the count cannot test any reading attached to them, so none is offered for any house, lord or age. Monthly and daily profections are left out too.

In Brief

  • House of the year: completed age divided by 12, remainder plus one, counted from the rising sign
  • Back to the 1st: at birth and at every multiple of twelve
  • Lord of the year: the profected sign’s ruler; this page uses the seven-body column, not the modern co-rulers
  • Muntha: the same count in the sidereal zodiac, changing at the varsh pravesh rather than the birthday
  • Western against Vedic: rising sign differs in 81% of 2026 births, lord of the year in 74%, at each of the six cities sampled

Start From Your Ascendant

Enter a birth date, time and place and the calculator returns the sidereal rising sign with its degree, plus the tropical figure behind it. Add your completed age to that sign, as above, to reach the year’s sign in either zodiac.
